Please check out that guys Google reviews for his business. Every honest review is a horror story about charging people hundreds of dollars for misdiagnosis and repairs at 3x dealer prices and threating customers about negatively reviewing him. His shorts don't have nothing compared to his pod slider western boots! I bet he's got to chase, catch them to get them on! Lol! Classic shit kickers, for sure! 👍💪🪝🤠
Not gonna lie so good to see somebody with so much knowledge make mistakes. Sometimes I feel so frustrated but this brings my spirits up thanks for a great video
To the people saying he talks too much, or likes to hear himself talk, the man is a teacher, that is now his role after passing the torch. He's going to talk, and if it's knowledge you don't already have, you better listen.
Fantastic episode! Clearly he knows exactly what he’s talking about. He just got a little bit ahead of himself. We’ve all been there and done that I can’t imagine the pressure of having the cameras and filming
You get the No 1 cyl. To top of compression.Pull Dist. Cap and the rotor should point to the no.1 cyl. And the dist.cap #1 position.,then make sure your plug wires are in the right port on dist. Cap.
I really appreciate you leaving in struggles that you have even with the vast experience and knowledge Dave has. I love that you showed the reality that not everything goes smooth all the time. I like both the channels and aspire to have a shop as cleans as Dave's.
Dave is the man definitely knows his shit and doesn’t take the fast or easy way out sometimes the most simple stuff will stump the most seasoned veterans
I went through the same stuff with my brother in law’s Pontiac 46 years ago in high school auto shop except we weren’t that lucky, his cam was bad and we had to replace it. Dave is a gem, one of the last of a dying breed. My Dad taught my brother and I the vacuum technique for timing also.
Wow he’s definitely a motor whisperer this guy can do anything everyone who chooses to use them are lucky to have people like that on there side GREAT CONTENT MY GUYS
Man. I had my truck recently in three different shops back to back. I spent a lot of money letting them replace things. That truck never ran right still. Had a miss. I needed a Dave. lol
Mechanic Dave is awesome! I worked in retail auto parts for 16 years and he makes me want to get back into the biz in some form. Car guys are the best!
Dave is the most valuable man in any auto shop even if he never picks up a wrench. The man's a living Techstream of every vehicle ever made. (Also if you keep watching there's a true funny moment @23:20 made be LOL for real)
I was always taught on gm that when timing a motor to always bring it to top dead center, when dropping the distributor in point the rotor at number 1 cylinder and make sure the the distributor has plenty of room to move.
This Dave guy sure was patting himself on the back a whole lot for someone who then proceeds to not set the distributor properly, overheats the motor, and then dumps coolant on the ground.
Lol, that was fun, I was yelling at the video. You got it in the end. Nice rig, I had a 197 FJ40 with the 4.2 liter inline six which had a compression ratio of 7.8:1 and delivered 135 hp with 200 lb/ft of torque.
After seeing this video amazed by his lack of knowledge I went to his channel. More of the same nonsense. Then I moved on to his terrible google reviews. I actually have 30 years of experience and I’m embarrassed for this guy. Read the reviews of how he treats his customers and let me know what you think of him then.
Did my automotive apprenticeship in a Toyota dealership, started in May of 71. Did automotive and light truck repair for 35+ years. Fun watching this trouble shooting madness. From the looks of the round turn signals, it probably had an F engine, 135.
I like this guy! You need to have him on more content for sure! Dude is super smart and explains things very well! He seems like a good person as well!
I said this a bunch of times already the name for this absolutely amazing beautiful rig should be Black Beard, it fits it perfectly. Great job you guys. 👏
This reminds me of Gilligans island….a 3hour tour literally backfired glad Dave stepped back from playing to the camera and self diagnose his work and figured it out
Great video of what it's really like to troubleshoot sometimes!! The struggle can be real, and even professionals need to take a step back and brainstorm together. Love the collab, what a surprise!!!
Bring no 1 up TDC pull that distributer turn it 180 with no 1 to the front left get the oil pump drive to set back in the distributer and route plugwires in the right order then it should be really close to factory setting😎👍
Good job, Dave ! And, Cudo's to Dave, of Dave's Auto Center, for diagnosing the LC"s issues and solving the timing issue (been there too many times myself). He runs one of the best auto repair services in the West. And, yes, I'm jealous of Darren's kid. He's one lucky boy to be gifted such a beautiful classic, a Toyota Land Cruiser. Always enjoy watching your and Heavy D's adventures; Y'all keep up the good work !
This is awesome! My dad has an identical Land Cruiser in the garage that he took apart in 1997 it’s sat in the garage since I think might have a big block v8 that he put in it. I’ve always wanted to win the lottery and get a shop to bring it back to its full glory!
Thanks DOUBLE DAVE’s for a fun and educational show true people showing that nothings ever perfect in life and yes Diesel Dave let’s do the twin turbin LS 😎👍🏻🇺🇸🦅🙏😇
Love those Toyota FJ’s. Had a ‘72 with a sbc 283ci in it. Those are 10 times the vehicle as a Jeep and would go through the mud better because both pumpkins on the front and rear ends were lined up unlike a Jeep whose were offset. Meaning on a Jeep you were pushing 2 pumpkins through the mud but on a FJ the front pumpkin pushed the mud out of the way for the rear one.
When number 1 is at TDC you drop in distributor where ever you want , wherever the rotor is pointing that is number 1 , put cap on and wire 1857--- and on from there ✅ the rotor can point anywhere Thats number one !
@@Demonphoto Distributor knowledge is rare with the students graduating from technical schools today because the engines today don't have distributors. When the engine manufacturers went to computers operating the engines along with stricter emissions, they did away with distributors. I got my automotive degree back during the late 70's with distributor and carburetor type engines. When they changed to fuel injection the computer age started. You had to have been trained on distributor engines to really know how to install or correct an improperly installed distributor. Refreshing my degree 20 years later showed me how technology has changed and when a distributor engine came in, I was chosen to instruct the class on distributor mechanics because even the instructor was rusty. believe it or not, real talk..
I once changed a distributor on a 79 F150 that I owned an yes I got it off 180 degrees it's easy to do and I'm not a professional technician either just what we here in the hills of Tennessee refer to as a shade tree mechanic ! So Dave good job catching tge problem and fixing it ! That's a good looking land cruiser ! 👍👍
Its a small block chevy with a over grown HEI distributor mount the control module underneath the housing and put the old school small cap and roter on the point style distributor with a new hall effect and toss the point plate.

That Land Cruiser was perfect to Swap a Mechanical OM606 Mercedes Diesel Turbo engine... Here in Portugal some have donne it with Nissan Patrol GR AXLES and are running Maxxis 42'' Tyres... Some also Swap for BMW electronic comtroled M57 Engine...
Two things I check and frequently end up replacing in Small block Chevies. They are the oil pump and the timing chain and gear set. Both are prone to failure on a old engine. The stock timing chain set often has nyon teeth that strip and cause a timing jump. If he is going to have to replace the timing cover to get a timing mark then inspect and replace timing chain and gear set while cover is off if necessary. This might be the cause of the original timing problem. The old oil pumps are just not up to the job if a kid puts his foot into it. Just from 60 years of experience with SB Chevs.
The amount of comments about how the new dave is a mechanical genius is ridiculous. He was all over the place. I was definitely not impressed. Also I’ve never heard of reengineering a front cover to center it on the crank so the front seal doesn’t leak.
I had a few FJ40’s back in the past. I had a 1974, two 1976’s, two 1978’s, and a 1981. I had a blast fully rebuilding these things from the ground up. I sold one of the 1978’s to a Whalers hockey player Grant Jennings who still has the thing over 30 years later!! Absolutely love the FJ40. The 1981 was set up for the US Forestry Service as an example of how strong and reliable they could build one, but shortly afterwards they were told they had to use a US brand. It sat for 10 years not getting any miles put on it until one of the folks taking over the building it was in was given ownership and started driving it around for an errand rig. Definitely was not an enthusiast type (lucky for me, lol) and he hated the thing. “It’s like driving a brick. I’d rather have a little SUV like a Blazer. 🤦♂️ At the time with a price of $2500, he basically gave it to me. Ready for this? 22,000 miles on the thing, lol. After putting about 20,000 miles on it the prices went nuts for awhile and I just HAD to sell it. Boy do I wish I held on to that thing for todays prices. 😵😵

Getting the history is one of the first things a mechanic should do.
This is the collaboration we never knew we needed. Dave is a mechanical genius.

Must be on compression stroke
Just watch the rocker arms at the same time to find the compression stroke.

not to mention thinking the FItech was a carb at the beginning 🤣

Dave’s UA-cam channel is amazing they are really smart
Daves are always number 1 coming from a Dave who knows

Yeah been following Dave's for awhile now. He is very smart and runs a fine shop. Thanks for the video guy's can't wait for the next one.
I like watching Dave’s shorts with the engines he does. That guy is smart
Together these daves are absolutely unstoppable
Dave, Dave and Dave are the best Dave’s on social media.
You’re guys channel has so much impact to the world both Dave’s and Hans is my favourite
This is not the collab that I thought I needed, but the collab that I LOVE!

Great job guys. Thank you 😊

I watch all of Dave’s videos he’s smart with engine and everything coolest colab ever
The ‘69 came with a 1F , not a 2F. Back in the day when the head gasket went, a SBC was cheaper and far more powerful than a 1F repair.
Man, it's a simple small block chevy..#1 piston up, point the rotor at the #1 terminal. Make sure you're not 180 out, and boom! easy peasy!
Dave makes me feel better about how my work goes!
Damn! Glad y'all are still in business!
