A sneak peek of Marcella Araica's 'Deconstructing A Mix' series in which she illustrates how to print stems when mixing with a hybrid analog/in the box set up.
Join us at Dream Asylum Studios in Miami for our second instalment on hybrid mixing with Marcella Araica! In this series, the acclaimed engineer gives you an insight into the creation of 'Go Girl' by Luke James. She recounts the various stages of tracking, discusses production by Danja, and demonstrates her techniques by remixing the multi-track! You'll see how Marcella groups certain parts, runs audio through hardware, and further enhances the signals 'in the box'. She explains why she incorporates certain equipment into a workflow that combines the power of both analog and digital tools. Using plug-ins, outboard gear, and a SSL 9000J console, Araica shows you how she processes drums, percussion, 808, synth bass, guitars, and vocals!

2:25 that I'm not able to get...... IN THE BOX. I'm guessing they cut this off because they didn't want to make plugin companies mad. Plugins are great but having a nice preamp, compressor, eq and other outboard gear going into the computer initIally for your source makes a HUGE difference.

Sure, but its not that plugins are inferior . If you know how to use em then you can mix better than even manny marroquin. There are no limits to something and that "warmth" crap isnt required everywhere not every track requires that crap 'warmth" .😑 like duh bro! Wtf?? So much analog obsession! Im myself an ssl board guy , but i wouldnt say that plugins are crap or limited. Old things doesnt mean that they are superior to every freakin thing in the whole world! This biased attitude and intolerability is fake a&^. If you want "warmth" or some crap , then get warm sounds first! Whats so neccessary for mixing to take care of that.

But they have a plugin version of her board and its sonically a solid match. Many plugins do miss the mark, but some do nail the sound if you know which ones that actually do, and you use it like they would. The sound she is getting is totally achievable in the box. 100%. But you're really just recreating her studio in the box is what it is. You won't get her sound with stock plugins.

While some large format analog consoles may still be in use, they are actually starting to become a thing of the past that's starting phase out in favorite of Hybrid Mixing in the box. Very few Mix Engineers mixes on an analog console much anymore these days as most of them have moved to a digital system . You see a lot Argosy Console and Sterling Modular desks these days in professional control rooms, mixing and Mastering rooms that are replacing the larger footprint consoles. All the new analog consoles are getting smaller cut done designed for hybrid mixing and analog summing these days.

So let’s get this straight… dump the stems into the board , mix down the stems , dump back onto the box mix down to one track then add the vst more compressor, saturation, eq etc… onto the track/master channel. Correct??? Or naw. Because i plan on buying a mixing board for my small studio

I have an interface with 24 ins and outs with the option of adding up to 90 something channels. It’s a rack mounted beast. I also have a vintage Allen and heath 24 channel 8 bus desk, which I brought and painstakingly replaced all the capacitors and transistors in so it runs like new with no noise.
When I have the structure of my song finished, I run each channel through the desk and re record it back into the DAW. The desk adds colour and in my opinion opens the sounds up and adds depth.
I can also do the entire mix down through the desk and use the busses and master out to do the summing.
I also have a 16 channel tape machine which I will restore and use too. Then I can get some of that lovely tape compression.

Those large boards are phasing out. Not many mixers mix on them anymore. Almost everyone is mixing Hybrid in the box without a mixer these days eliminating the middle man analog console. The new standard is outboard gear going straight into a multi channel AD / DA converter like the Lynx Aurora or Apogee Symphony i/O.

In those case is the left track of the stereo stem sample the same as the right as 2 mono tracks joined together ?

I saw a video where mick guzauski mentioned that some music supervisors actually hire 3rd parties to check if the the stems actually sum to the mix properly.

Though Marcella Araica is a refreshing member of the few female mixers we have compared to the males in the pantheon....making a plug for "the board" is like making a plug for oil powered automobiles....or ammonia laced cigarettes.....or more bottled water in plastic. If everyone felt they had to empty their pockets for those couple pieces of hardware to make the grade they would a. go broke and b. never release their song....leaving it once more to the music industry to handle their artists and collect their pay from none other than you or me.

Dude buying a small desk and interface is cheaper than buying new plug ins every week, which is what they want you to do. Plug ins can’t do what analog equipment can do and that’s just the facts. Also if you are really into the art then surely you can hear how much better analog equipment sounds.
