Great overview of the fair, thanks for the shout out for the 3rd place ribbon for my hat! :-)
It's always fun to know who made something! I was tickled to meet you! :-)
What a gorgeous hat! Well done! 👍🏽
So it was a win for you both! Terrific hat!
Best lines I overheard in the Creative Arts Building- Guy states loudly “Look at that painting!” His wife replies “No that’s cross stitch.”
A little six year old girl exclaims at the wall of bread, “I LOVE YOU BREAD with a little butter. “
This was great! I’m going to have to go back! I got Martha’s Cookies, rode in the gondola across the park, saw the sheep and the bees, and had tons of fun watching the people go by! I could have spent hours in the Creative Activities building - so amazing. Loved seeing so many foods on a stick too!
Thank you for this amazing video. I found it so interesting. Your videos are exactly how you tube videos should be. No loud background music and no slurping drinks. I am an avid watcher.
Thank you so much for this visit to the Fair. We lived in St. Paul for over 20 years and went to the Fair multiple times every year. This brought back so many wonderful memories.
Thank you, Roxanne! I have fond childhood memories of being at the MN St Fair! How wonderful that the knitting submissions is growing!
We live in Maine and a few years ago my husband was on a business trip in the Midwest and took a day off to go to the MSF. He enjoyed this video so much and again sharing his experience with me. What an amazing fair. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the memories. I was a MN 4-H member in the 70’s. Actually got grand champion in knitting!!!
Oh I loved this video. Thanks Roxanne for filming and the great voiceovers. What beautiful work!
4H was always big when I was young baking and sewing for us city folks.... My mom was a master needlepoint person she would enter her stuff Nebraska state fair. My grandmother loved the fair....she worked at University of Nebraska agriculture extesion office .... plus a garden club member too which had categories...... chickens and draft horses I thought were grand!
Thanks
Thank you Roxanne, for sharing your state fair videos. Two of my favorite things are there - animals and crafts! I enjoyed it immensely, and may watch it again for inspiration! Be well and Blessed 🧶
What a beautiful setting and a great outing for you and us. Thank you for taking the time to film and do the voice over it was pretty special and very big. I absolutely love it when they share the history of the area. I was amused by your Caramelized apple with peanuts. I love the way Caramel is pronounced in America sounds so fancy.
Really enjoyed your visit and I am going to send you a little something but you have to spent it wisely. Take care and catch up next time.
What an amazing selection of crafts and hand knitted items. Thank you for the video. 🇬🇧
The butter carving is amazing. I think I could go just for that!
It's definitely a must-see item on my list every time I go!
I didn't go to the MN State Fair this year, but after watching your video, I wish I did. I would love to own anyone of the handmade sweaters.
The creativity and talent you shared from the fair was wonderful to see. Makers do amazing work. I loved the wooden boat. Thank you for sharing the fair.
That was most enjoyable!
Wow! Roxanne, thank you so very much for sharing the incredible work of so many artists. I grew up going to my county fair and road the slide on a burlap sack, too. Great memories and it’s so wonderful to see these fairs doing so well. Great video and thanks again.
I may never get to the MN State Fair so Thank You! That was very fun to watch!
Leg warmers-I bet that was a big category in the 1970s/1980s!
I checked, and it wasn't! There were about half as many categories back then, but they may have still had a category of "not otherwise specified."
Thank you for sharing Fair experience and video.
Fun video! Thank you 😊
That hat you highlighted is a Woolly Wormhead design. It's a really fun short row challenge!
Now that young girls and young women are taking up the art of textiles, they themselves refer to them as" granny crafts" or "granny lifestyle." My granddaughter was taught to crochet by her college roommate. I sent them T-shirts that say "Granny in Training." The background has a cartoon of colorful granny squares. I love their playful attitudes.
Wow! Thank you for sharing ❤.
Another great video . I really enjoyed it. Some I would have liked to see a little slower and focused for detail especially the knitting winners. Re the sheep barn- that was fun - that one could have been slower as well. About the Southdown sheep -- those looked like Babydolls. They were an original sheep brought to NA, apparently in the 1800's according to records but there is evidence that they were here earlier . They were an all purpose sheep for meat, wool and milk and perfect size for a family. After refrigeration they were bred to be a much larger commercial variety because the originals were known to the best tasting sheep breed. Basically the result of crossing produced longer legs but the stocky body remained pretty much the same. In the 1990's the sheep from the imported original genetics were very rare with only a few hundred left in NA. They were rounded up and renamed Babydoll Southdowns and became known as miniature to distinguish them from the newer and larger commercial Southdowns . There is now some confusion relating to rare breeds as to which came first but it was the smaller sheep that was the heritage Southdown . They have gorgeous fleece and though a shorter staple is cashmere grade coming in anywhere from 18 - 22 microns for the best of this Down breed . It is a natural superwash and a lot of fun to spin from the locks . If you are a spinner and not tried it - give it a go . I live north of Mn in Mb, Canada and imported some Babydolls (and colored angora goats) from Mn. I raised them for 14 years and loved it!
but covid hit and hit and had to let them all go . One day would love to get to your state fair. Ours in Mb has dwindled to be pretty sparse with no more creative competitions like this .
A very enjoyable tour! I'd love to check out this fair someday.
Amazing! There is nothing like this in my country!(Netherlands)
I loved your video of the Minnesota fair. It was very informative and for me gave me great insight into another states fair organization. The Texas State Fair has the cooking competitions and demonstrations in the center of the creative arts displays. Our displays also include photography and legos. Prior to the opening of the fair any competitors who don’t win must pickup their items. There is a lack of space for display. One thing that is different is there is a catalog of where every item is located and I’d manned throughout the fair. You can always find your it if you know the competitors name and category.
Ah, that is fascinating that they don't display the non-winners! The only ones they don't display here are ones that are essentially disqualified from the competition, because they are dirty or very pilled (i.e. not in new condition)
This was very neat to see and I hope one year I’ll get to see it in person since my brother lives in West St Paul.
Wow! The standard of handwork on display at your Fair is really high!
It's the *state* fair. County fairs are much, much smaller!
Thank you for the wonderful tour of the fair! It's such fun to see what people create.
Very interesting. Thanks for the video. 🧶
This was fun. Thank you.
Very enjoyable!
😂 so funny that they had an “old ladies” category, really makes me curious as to what the “old gentlemen’s “ category was
Thank you so much for your overview of the fair. I love to see all of the different works of art. It's really amazing to see all the heart and soul poured into each item. I might not be familiar with all of the different crafts, but the amount of work put in by the maker is definitely recognizable ❤
Thanks!
You're welcome, Marie! :-)
Thank you so much! I have always dreamed of going to the Minnesota state fair. Now I want to go even more. So much talent. I can't imagine how long it takes to organize and make those displays! WOW! Just wow! 😊
Hi Roxanne. This was so much fun to watch! Everything was beautiful! That boat was amazing! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Loved it!🤗🤗
Thanks so much for sharing this state fair. I especially enjoyed it as I am a Minnesota native transplanted to eastern Washington state many years ago. Rekindled lovely memories for me. Part of my heart is always in Minnesota -- it's a lovely state.
Thank you so much for the tour of the fair, this is a great way to share the experience!
I am in awe of a few of the knitted pieces there, amazing work by some very skilled people. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you for the tour. I can’t handle all the people any more, so I really enjoyed you Creative Arts tour. Thanks
Wow, what a wonderful time this must have been! Thank you for sharing so much with us. There were so many incredible pieces of all sorts, and I can only imagine the number of hours that went into making, staging, and grading everything. Very inspiring! Also, that dish of apples with caramel looked amazing! Breakfast of champions!
Maybe it is like: Apples to Tomatoes. 😊
Thanks for the tour of the Fair!
Roxanne, your videos are always so interesting and educational. You take me back to my grandparents era and I so enjoy the trips down memory lane. My grandparents (from England) grew up in very small places and at 14 went out to work and fended for themselves. I think sometimes we all forget how easy our lives are now. My grandmother would be in shock if she was to go into a yarn store today. She bought her yarn at a local market and she got her yarn seconds there on the cheap. A different world we live in now but I remember those trips to pick out new yarn. Thank you for another great video. Best wishes.
I am so used to US horseshow ribbon colors where yellow is third, white is fourth, and pink is fifth that any other system is confusing.
I kinda forgot just how big that fair is. I still haven't gone. Nice walk through Rox. So many pretty things. I think my ex daughter in law used to work it a lot of years when she was younger.
I loved seeing the Hardanger as well as all the knitting. Wow. there was a lot to see. Thank you for taking us along and it looks like you had nice weather.
I don't think the weather could have been more perfect!
❤
Thank you so much for sharing your state fair experience with us. I likely won’t get to the fair this year, so I appreciate your tour of the creative activities, and especially the knitting. ❤️
Great episode! So much inspiration from the FO’s.
I’ve set up many booths for our state fair in the bees and honey exhibit. Reading the rules and categories taught me a lot. My personal best was 2nd place for encaustic art, and 5th for creamed honey. The club’s best was 4th out of 9 counties. The club members with blue ribbons were so proud of their accomplishment. I’ll consider entering for hand knitting one day. 😊
That was so awesome to see. Thank you so much.
Its was a great overview thanks for sharing. It would be so much fun.
That looks like my kind of fair! It's a shame that my local one (Toronto-CNE) didn't have too many crafts... I feel like it used to have its own pavilion, but now it's a small corner compared to the rest of the fair. Thanks for the tour!!
Oh, thank you for this brilliant video! I feel like I have attended the fair myself.
Thank you Roxanne, great overview of fair, I live in Texas and have never been to the Texas State Fair. My Great Grandmother was born in Wood County Texas when it was a Territory (also my grandmother and mother). I grew up in Southern California and went to the California State Fair as a teenager. I think they called it an Expo??
This was so interesting. I'm from the UK and we have County Shows for some counties. It's a long time since I've been to one, but maybe next year I will try to get to one. Here, they are usually in a series of marquees, not many of the shows have permanent buildings. There are displays in the main showground, like the winning animals or dog agility competitions.
Excellent episode Rox, thanks for the show
This was so inspiring! Thank you so much for this video! ❤
Very fun and so 'human scale.' One really 'gets' the idea of a wellmade piece coming right off the hands.
I love the kooky display rationale. I can just imagine some poor knitter searching each day for where an item landed. (And did it 'medal?')
They email out the list of winners the morning of the fair. So you can "cheat" by reading the list, or show up and search for your items to see what you've won!
So many gorgeous things! Do the items have names of patterns on them? That dark colored Gansy you mentioned was amazing, would love to know what pattern it was, as well as the light purple sweater with colorwork just past your friends sweater, and underneath a yellow and blue sweater (and just before your friends hat). It had a white ribbon!
The entrants are not asked what pattern they used. Only the ribbon winner's name is attached to the item, and that's a very recent change.
This is so fascinating, thanks for sharing the Minnesota State Fair with us.
I just loved this video - and now I want to go to the fair! Is there a website you recommend that would help me plan a visit next year or the year after?
The fair has a website: www.mnstatefair.org/ The fair is always the 12 days leading up to (and including) Labor Day. If you can avoid going on a weekend, the crowds are more manageable.
I truly enjoyed this and would love to go to this fair. I had to slow the speed down so i didn't get nauseous🤢🤮 from the fast motion🫨😵💫 though. To be fair, I get motion sick really easy. Would've loved to see more, but I know it's tedious on you. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING THIS!
Loved the comment about not getting on this ride .."unless one of my family members was in danger"... 😂.
