After all the years I still love the part when the soldier goes in to rescue the little girl and comes out with her on his back ! da da da da da da da daaaa
It's not Thanksgiving unless you watch this movie. As a child I loved this movie and as an adult when the soldiers start to march to the full orchestra, I still get chills up my spine, still a child at heart loving to see the rescue by those able and willing. Good for children of all ages!
I am 63 , and I remember this when I was very young. My family and I would watch this before Thanksgiving dinner on New Yorks Wpix channel 11 along with Hans Christian Andersen. Great memories.
This is THE best example of good vs evil I have ever seen in movies. The music, the stunts and especially the editing are all in sync. This is Raiders Of the Lost Ark 50 years earlier. The soldiers are relentless in their defense of toyland. The soldier loses its head and still marches on. Brilliant action sequence with crisp long shots. Should be shown in every film school.
I have had my UA-cam channel for over a decade and this is still the most watched video by far. It's nice to know so many people love it as much as I do. I am 56 years old and when they start pushing those buttons I still get goosebumps :)
PIX would run that movie every chance they got after Thanksgiving Day till Christmas Day. Actually they would air this classic at least twice on Christmas Day.
The movie resonates from a child's perspective because we all had to deal with bullies. Stan and Ollie choose to stand up to the bullies, fighting them valiantly with darts. And when the Wooden Soldiers are called into action, we know those those bullies (Barnaby and the Bogeymen) will get their asses kicked.
One of those true movie magic moments from my childhood and I still get that same thrill ever since; I think it introduced me to march music, and such an exhilarating march it is! In 1983, I had the great pleasure to briefly interview actor Henry Brandon, who played the villain Barnaby here for my college paper (you can imagine my surprise to find he was a very lively, much older man, who looked not much different than he did in the '30s). In answer to my question about what he remembered the most from the production, he--very theatrically (of course!)--rested his hand on his chin and after some careful thought, came out with: "Those fuckin' pee-wees of Stan's! I kept getting hit in the face with 'em, and after 19 takes, the finally decided to put one on wire to hit me on the head as scripted. To this day, I think I still have bruises from those suckers!" I should note I met him, along with many other Hal Roach veterans at a "Sons of the Desert" stage show at the World Theater in St. Paul--what a memorable night--including the wonderful George "Spanky" McFarland, Mary Ann ( "Don't drink the milk!") Jackson, Tommy "Butch" Bond (who stopped the show with "I Love to Sing-a", a tune he famously sang for a Warner Bros. cartoon and later memorably showed up as a sound byte on "South Park) and last, but not least, June Marlowe--Miss Crabtree herself (I recall thinking at the time, "holy crap! I'm standing here talking to THE Miss Fooking Crabtree!"). When she asked my name to add to her autograph, I glibly added, "It's Michael, but don't call me Michael, call me 'Chubsie-Ubsie'"! 😉). I still have it--she ran a line through my name and wrote in "Chubsie-Ubsie". I still hope that one day, a new version of this film will be made -- Tim Burton, I hope you hear me! However, we'll never again have the likes of Stan and Ollie. They were magic, indeed.
Thank you for your comment regarding Henry Brandon! There have been three remakes thus far -- the Disney version, a TV special starring Drew Barrymore, and a cartoon version in the late nineties. None of them matched the charm of the original 1934 classic. Personally, I think Tim Burton's tastes are too macabre for "Babes in Toyland". I rather see someone like Sam Raimi take the helm. I thought he did a decent job with "Oz the Great and Powerful". But without Laurel and Hardy, it would probably still be a losing proposition.
Watched this every year on Thanksgiving and sometimes it would be on Christmas day after all the gift opening and oohing and ahhhing was over and helping mom make Christmas dinner, we'd have this on to watch while making it. Such a timeless classic. Watching Stan look at the link of sausage when Hardy said "I think Barnaby has a hand in this." Stan looks at the link lol! Did you know Barnaby was only like 27 when he made this? Amazing! Just love that music and the excitement of them sending The Boogie men back to Boogey land! LOVE IT!
The Wooden Soldiers vs. The Bogeymen >>>>>>>>> the final battle of Endgame and Game of Thrones. The score, the style, the practical effects (for 1934! Genius!) you can see what's going on and the fact that Toyland was saved by Stan's mistake is brilliant. They don't make fictional entertainment like they used to.
As a child, once you see this classic movie and classic movie ending, it does bring up feelings of nostalgia years later and the goosebumps of the moment of them marching out to rescue the innocent folks of the town. The music of this scene never leaves you no matter how many years have passed since we all first saw this wonderful film.
Almost 90 years old this movie is and been watching it since I was 7 or 8 and still get choked up on this part. This will be always be watched in my house.
So many memories! We used to watch with when my mom and dad and sister and two brothers were all alive. My mom used to make us, pigs in a blanket, while she cooked the turkey for Thanksgiving.
Can’t help but smile the whole time no matter how many times I watch this. This movie was probably my first exposure to the concept of a soldier. This is exactly what a soldier should be. I remember even as a small child reflecting on this scene and wanting to be able to save others just like they did.
Love watching the movie especially since it is about the different nursery rhyme we read or heard about growing up as a child. Loved the end scene when Stan and Ollie started up the toy soldiers and they were human soldiers chasing the Boogeymen and Silas Barnaby out of toy land.
I loved watching this scene over and over again to catch all the things happening in the background. Funny I noticed the wooden soldiers had a medical crew too. Lol
The bit where the toy soldier gets his head ripped off crashing through a wall, and just keeps right on going, must have inspired loads of future sci-fi and horror authors! Also, that on/off switch on the back always reminds me of Data! And last but not least, I bet Patrick Troughton based a lot of his physical performance as the Second Doctor on Stan Laurel.
My little brother and I, sitting on the floor in the basement, while my father makes Sunday Gravy on the gas stove behind us, watching this film when our Beloved Christmas came around and we all went to Mass. What I'd give to go back to our house in Queens and all the Old Timers were still with us sitting around the dining room table eating Scungilli and Baccala on Christmas Eve. Time is a thief.
I remember growing up in the 90s, they’d play this movie on the WB channel every Thanksgiving. This has always been my favorite scene out of the entire movie since first watching it. After this movie, they’d play another with the two same actors co-starring in it. I don’t remember that other movie name yet only thing I do remember that they’re both on some kind of ship traveling across the sea. That’s all I can remember….
I love this theme"March Of The Toys"by Vic Herbert..I wonder..what he would have thought about this film version of his classic children's opera..if he had lived to see it?
0:34 - 1:08 I remember watching March of the Wooden Soldiers every year around Christmas on WPIX-Channel 11 in NYC. And almost every year to promote it, they would use the clips from this scene.
It would be a fun watch, and even though I'm usually skeptical of remakes, I think this is one of those few movies that could really use an update with their talent. I would improve the final scene by figuring out how to keep the soldiers looking as mechanical as possible, that stop motion sequence as they enter the village is one of my favorite scenes in any Laurel and Hardy film. My only problem is watching the soldiers become obviously acted out, but this wasn't an easy scene to pull off in the thirties.
This battle scene was so stirring. It was the first time I ever saw a bogey man. The scene where Ollie tells the people of Toyland about he, Stanley, Tom Tom and Bo Peep’s encounter with them in Bogeyland , the line, “Half man, half animal!” And then he says in horror, Aahh! THE BOGEYMEN!” March Of The Wooden Soldiers/ Babes In Toyland(depending upon your television station presented it on or after the Thanksgiving parades or on Black Friday and during the Christmas season), to me was one of the greatest holiday movies.
I grew up adoring this movie and always will. If I have one criticism, it's that the Bogeymen shouldn't have had torches. First of all, they're portrayed as primitive creatures and would probably be frightened by fire. Second, the torches might have been used against the wooden soldiers. Fortunately, the Bogeymen weren't clever enough to think of that. The soldiers, along with Stan and Ollie, save the day.
It was Stanley who got the order mixed up/ Santa ordered 600 Soldiers at 1ft high however Stanley said it was 100 Soldiers at 6ft high which would save Toy land from Barnaby and the Boogymen. AMEN.

Unbelievable that the actor who plays Barnaby was in his early 20s. His name was Henry Kleinbach and later changed it to Henry Brandon. What a wonderful film this is from when I was a kid to now a 66 year old geeza!!

Thrilling when the soldiers start marching and that great music of Victor Herbert
