I've been keeping aquariums for 60 years, and I have a 90 gal SE Asian planted tank with a school of about 20 Harlequins that looks outstanding! Just because a fish is undemanding shouldn't diminish the importance of it in the hobby. Absolutely stunning fish.
One of my favorite fish, schooling behavior only second to rummy nose tetras but fare less demanding. So underrated because of the "begginer" tag . The colors really come out once they settle in. Gr8 video, Im glad you put this little beauty under the spotlight it deserves! Thanks for your great content!! ❤
Harlequin rasboras just might be the perfect fish in terms of maintenance imo! In my research I’ve found that a lot of “beginner” and “community” fish like danios, tetras and livebearers come with one or more caveats, like not being as hardy or peaceful as people think, but harlequins seem to be the one exception as I haven’t read even one negative comment about them anywhere I’m honestly surprised that I never kept them before but they’re definitely my top pick I plan on getting a nice big group for my 20 long, and I’ll have plenty of options for tankmates that pair well with them, like neon tetras or albino corydoras
I 100% agree with everything you've said. At the moment I have a heavily planted 20long. I have a school of 12 Neon Tetras and 6 of these rasboras. They've all been thriving for the last year, and there's been no bickering between the two species. I have noticed the rasboras are a bit more lively. My neon school kinda just swims around and explores together. The rasboras they all just play around together and are super active. Really awesome to look at, especially with their coloring .
I am setting up my second tank right now. It's a 10 gallon, my first heavily planted tank, and I just ordered 8 Harlequin Rasboras to put in it. I am so excited!
After 30 years of having nothing but all male Cichlid tanks I made the move. Currently have a 100 gal acrylic tank that I bought a year ago. I have a combo of neon tetras, lamb chop and Harlequin Rasbora's. I have 30 neons, 25 lamb chops and 32 Harlequin Rasboras. The schooling in my tank is amazing to say the least. They all are very hardy and healthy. About to get another group of Harlequins, their color is amazing. Have a black back ground, black sub straight and Greek themed decorations so they really pop in the tank. It's such a big tank I am going to keep adding these guys. Thanks for the vids, they are always great...
One thing about the breeding (if you don't mind me adding), is they lay eggs on the underside of large leaved plants. I've seen my females hanging upside down waiting for a male to appear and then they lay them under the leaves as opposed to scattering them in a spawning mop. Just a comment and by no means a criticism. Love the chanel from across the big pond! 😊
Yeah mine lay most days around lunchtime a few females start doing little flips underside of leaves like you say, wait for a male and this twist over each other. Wonderful fish to keep and to watch.
The Harlequin is Hands down my favorite schooling fish. Peaceful, beautiful, hardy, not Nano but not too big either and schools tight. Six in a small tank will catch your eye and a couple dozen in a big tank are even better. Great community fish for Beta, Angels or anything with long flowing fins as they don't fin nip or stress anyone out. Just about the perfect schooling community fish.
0:51 , I believe you have two different species of Harlequin rasbora here :) The first five are the Trigonostigma truncata (unnamed yet), while the last one is a T. heteromorpha, the classic & true Harlequin rasbora. Just pointing that out :) Your videos are great!
I love my espei's currently have 4 (started with 6). They have great color, are super peaceful and active. They hang out with my CPD's and the rest of my tetras.
Breeding? Funny story right now in my 10g, low tech with java ferns, moss, and some botanicals I add weekly. Been running the tank for two years. Just did a new stocking with 7 rasboras… few months later there are fry ALL OVER! I thought they would get eaten up but weeks later three are now at least 7-8 juveniles a month old just chilling. They eat off of the leaves and filter and I suppose what falls to the bottom. This week I did give them live brine to help them grow for the first tome(I honestly was hoping majority would get picked off by the adults ) Now it looks like another batch has bred because there are more tiny tiny babies about again! What am I gonna do with all these fish!!?? The only pet store local to me is petsmart 5/5 easiest fish to breed though! 😂
I have a couple dozen harlequins in my 250gal planted community tank... gorgeous fish, especially schooling across the front of the tank. I'll probably breed them.
Such a great fish. They have bred for me and seem to be one of the only fish I can keep alive. I seem to get my fish to live about a year our so then they're pass. Aways have cycled tanks, Water changes when Nitrates rise and good quality food.
Hi Jason. Very tempted to try these I set up months ago a 15g full of plants. Some snails 🐌 appeared and seems to be doing great. Thanks for the profile
As crazy as it may sound I keep my Harlequin rasboras with brilliant rasboras lake Tanganyika cichlids of course they are the smaller cichlids Julie transcriptus Leleupi Calvus Birchardi and Cyprochromis Leptosoma and it has truly been working fine my water is about as hard as yours just goes to show you how excellent these fish are and how many different setups you can keep them in
I have 7 harlequins with 5 cherry barbs in a 29H. They get along great and tend to stay in their own zones. I have noticed the Harlequins need to eat a bit more than the barbs and get 'hangry' if I don't give them an evening snack. They start flaring and nipping at each other. A little snack and everybody calms right down again. They are so zippy I am having a hard time to see the sexes but I think I only have a single female in the mix. Adding them to the barbs has been great as the barbs used to be so shy and would hide most of the time but the barbs have become bolder and more active since the harlequins arrived. It's exactly what I wanted from a community tank.
I love these species profiles, they're so helpful. Only problem is I want to buy all the fish 😅 I hope you do a profile on species with tight schooling behavior. There's a ton of 'schooling' fish, but most only shoal unless fish are in huge groups of 50 or more (or around there). I think neons/cardinals are the famous good schoolers, but I'm on the hunt for silver tip tetras after your last profile
I'm looking into getting porkchop rasboras, and I've heard that they prefer low-light tanks with lots of plants and tinted water. I'm wondering how necessary it is to set up my 20-gallon tank like that for them🤔
might try these look cool should go well in my tank, love the info, only issue i have had is went and got some north fin community food and they wont eat it..... they prefer the cheap food lol
Hi guys ! Here a question from France . I ve seen many times our informations are not the same in France. For exemple, I think many of you, Big fishkeeping Channels, have made a video for angelfishes. in France we think that the bare minimum tank size for angelfishes are around 120gallons when english Channels are saying around 55Gallons... Strange isbnt it?
Maybe it’s just me, but I think more people should work with beginner fish. That way when life happens they seem to be a little easier on the care take a little more I don’t know how to say it other than neglect or abuse.
Hello,Im not sure if anyone will respond to this, but ive had my harlequin rasboras for almost two weeks.Yesterday I added in pygmy corydoras that showed no signs of illness whatsoever. This morning I noticed that my female rasbora was flashing. She swims upside down and rubs herself against a plant. She does this when a male is chasing her,is this normal?
Hello! I was wondering why my group of 10 harlequin rasbora that has been added to my newly cycled (5 weeks) 37 gallons aquarium about one week ago began hiding in a corner of the tank. The day before, they were fine and acting normal, but suddenly, they began hiding in my plants at the bottom of the tank together. I found that weird, since my water parameters were fine when I tested them. My aquarium is around 25 C. Since they are always hiding, I have difficulty feeding them. I hoped someone could help me

Harlequin typically get closer to 2 inches, the lambchop is more of a Nano fish, but they look very similar.@@Noxlion28

I suppose. 55 gallons is ok for one or a pair. When trying to keep larger groups a 6ft tank is a much better option.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think more people should work with beginner fish. That way when life happens they seem to be a little easier on the care take a little more I don’t know how to say it other than neglect or abuse.
Beautiful Rasboras. What is wrong with the Marble Angel's nose. It looks like it has wound above it's mouth.
That was a weird angel - that was just the color of its face.
Harlequins are a nice fish. Gina Hetlage
can you keep them with Amano shrimp ?
Should be ok!
Would porkchops work with skirt tetras or is that pushing it?
It might be ok in at least a 29 gallon.

Hi new subb here...can I have 8 rasbora heteromorpha, 1 cleaner fish and 1 Betta in 30 litre acquarium?
That can be a little tough with a betta I might do the betta and a couple mystery snails?
They are jumpers, so use a lid or keep your water level lower.
Ah, the harlequin rasbora school ... the beating heart of any Asian community tank.
Yep, looks like a lamb chop on that particular rasbora
Anybody ever kept them with Electric Blue Acara? Not sure if they’re likely to end up becoming a snack or not.
They might getting eaten if these guys are on the smaller side.
They look like my T-bone tetras
I've kept them for several years and they're okay, but I think they're a little boring compared to other schooling fish.
This fish need air pump or no
Most aquariums would do well to have a filter of some kind?
I just put 3 in my tank. Thought they were peaceful, but they are bullying my white clouds.😢
Definitely add more if you have the space. Big groups are always better.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I only have a 10 gallon and it’s at capacity. I hate to, but I may just rehome them.
Is anyone else concerned about the black angel, his mouth area is looking pretty rough.
I swear the only way they can die is when they jump out of the tank or die of old age, very tanky and robust species
Avoid those fish as much as you can they die like no tomorrow
