I met a 10 yr old Dane once. Biggest one I've ever seen, by far. Walked off-lead, by an about 80 yr old tiny Italian lady. His name was Otto and the most gentle of giants. ❤🇨🇦
Can you do a video on how to figure out your dogs temperament and energy levels when its a mixed breed from a shelter? I dont know what he is so most of it is guess work and hoping for the best (he’s a great dog though. Very sweet and loves people)
Facts. I had family with a great dane and that one dog was more work than four others combined. Beautiful creature. Lovely experiences you couldn't get with other companion dogs. Still one you couldn't fuck around with. Your training game had to be on.
When I was about seven/eight years old, we rescued an older Great Dane (about three/four at the time) her name was Minnie, lol. She was huge and the gentlest dog you'd ever meet. Ever since then, my family has been in love with the breed.
My Great Dane is somewhat trained he won’t jump on people but sometime when they are along with him he can tell if they are big enough and strong enough to handle the weight
Sadly know too many Great Danes, that despite being with knowledgeable and experienced Dane owners, turned nasty, and as you say, when it goes wrong, it goes horribly wrong. ☹️ Love the content! ❤️
@@fe5018 sadly i think it was primarily genetics. With one specifically, the owners were still in contact with the breeder and litter mate owners and there was unfortunately a few others from this litter that had similar issues, and the owners they were in contact with had also had Danes prior. I'm quite involved with the dog showing world, and there is sadly a very high volume of dogs bred for looks, where temperament is not an accounted factor, be it agression or nerves, and often times, issues with temperament are completely disregarded in favour of a "good looking" dog.
I have had a great dane since I was 2-11 and he was my best friend. His name was bo, he was the sweetest dog ever, I used to play doctor on him, read books to him. And he was my best friend, me and my family were devastated, when he passed
The worst thing are the double bag sized dumps mine take in the yard....lol😂 The worst thing isn't the size, Danes know how big they are. They are very smart dogs. Mine will get in a area where my wife has trinkets and highly breakable items and almost like he knows to be very careful. The worst thing is the lifespan.
So so so so true i have a 6mo old great dane and i wouldn't get a Great Dane until I could guarantee I could afford the proper training to get them trained properly. The cost of them is just as big as they are physically, you must also be able to afford insurance on them.
One person I know has a Great Dane and he is so chill he will just sit on the couch and come up for pats and they also own chihuahuas it’s so funny seeing a big dog and small dogs together 😂😂
Mine is just mean. He was never taught on a leash so having a 140lbs 2 year old dog that I’m just now living with learn a leash and HATE like super super reactive to other dogs…. Just a disaster. I reached out to a behaviorist that was local to me and a trainer. Both said they couldn’t help me. So I worked with him for a year and was able to walk him safely up and down our street. But before I could really get into that to feel safe walking him around the neighborhood he tested positive for heartworm and training was put on the back burner for the last 4 month and I’ve got another month before I can really work with him. He gets SO worked up over the littlest of things it takes a LOT… my Great Pyrenees is my saving grace. When I had a really tough training day with the Dane I do some fun training with the pyr. ❤
My dad had a great dane, he didn't even try to train her. He'd blame me if she stole my food or jumped the sink even though it was never my responsibility to train his dog. Every morning he'd wake up and yell at her when he could've just taken her to a trainer. I feel sorry that she had to live her life that way but I didn't have the means to make it better.
As someone who read a couple books, researched online. My Great Dane is not perfect, he still pulls sometimes on his leash. However he was easily trained, and is amazing!
I had a great dane that was just at 3ft tall, and he was muscular too. He used to be really sweet but one day he just realized his power and how little he has to try when wrestling with the other dogs. He became a fucking wrecking ball and knew how to use it against his brothers. My American Bullies used to bounce him around but they just started getting plowed 😂
@F E he was around 2 years old when he seemed to have more confidence. His brother's all play-fight with him and he used to take it easy on them but I think he realized he was stronger than they all were when he pinned down one of my german shepherds Donny, and Donny couldn't get him off. I remember he looked confused and surprised like "Whaaaat I could've just been doing this the whole time??" 😂😂 he started whopping them and none of my other dogs could handle him
every video on here: 1. question 2. im a canine behaviorist and i actually worked with this sort of dog 3. do research before getting a dog or have a bad time and i somehow like it. despite not having or wanting a dog
My father had a Great Dane and she was either the best dog ever or my father is good at training dogs, she never jumped on people, protected me and my brother when we were little, never made any problems but she passed away because she got a rare type of cancer when she was 4 years old.
We had a Great Dane, she was quite stubborn but the worst part was she ate *e v e r y t h i n g*. Someone's underwear, an entire tray of chocolate cupcakes (including the cardboard tray), anything left in the trash or on the counter since it was eye level for her. Even the eggs from the chicken coop despite being allergic and swelling up every time. She ate some butterfly hair clips and had to have surgery to remove them. I think she learned after that one.
My family had gotten a great dane that turned out to be deaf, and she was just worst dog ever. She dug holes jumped on people constantly, barked extremely loudly because she could not hear herself, destroyed doors by jumping on them and scratchin them, etc. We only had for about a year and half before we gave her away. We gave her away first because we just couldn't handle her and second because our other great dane did not like her at all either. We used to call her puppy terrorist because she was just the worst dog ever.
The other thing that's the worst is their short life expectation. Losing a big sweet and loveable dog like a great dane at only 7-9 years of age is the reason why I wouldn't actively choose to have one. I lost my greyhound at 7 years of age and it was horrible and heart breaking.
Yep!! Feeling like I got hit by a bus a few times and did 1000 deadlifts after a clients dane pulled me over. Probably looked like a freaking movie scene
I love my Danes. They are super easy to train, except my current girl. They are friendly and great with kids as a rule. I will probably always have one in my home. If they are trained, or if aggressive behavior is encouraged it goes super wrong.
We had a huge Great Dane years ago. Here's the deal. Our GD was very laid back and a pretty lazy dog. Not hard to live with at all BUT, he was trained to a "T" when he was a puppy. He knew his commands inside out and was great on the lead. We did that because you will NEVER be able to deal with a 150 lb huge GD once they are grown if you do. not do the work when they are a puppy. They are massive. Just put in a lot of training when they are still little!
i go a great dane a few months ago and now he is fully grown and we have taught him not to jump on ppl so u just have to teach them not to jump and it’ll be fine!
I'm very lucky with my Great Dane, she's pretty small, we got a big matrass for her to sleep on. She's 7 and incredibly playfull and fit. Definitely get a good bed for them.. bad for the bones otherwise. They are a lovely breed very sweet and yet don't come by our house in the night with any bad intent
My Great Dane Herlequin- Was FEROCIOUS than my Rotty. He made my Rotty look like a Cute poodle. He torn two other dogs in halves and bitten many including humans where as the moment we use to check on him, he was the cutest living dog ever. We couldn’t have known unless one day I found Blood around his muzzle. Definitely it was not his blood and then the news in the housing society group that a dog is been torn in halves and it’s body is thrown in one of the plots. Thankfully no one has seen him apart from my servant. But Great Dane if bred wrong or trained mistake wise, they could result in this ferocious killing dog.
Even simply small accidents, when mine was about one he got excited for a new toy jumped jammed my finger and broke my hand. They are gentle giants but size is size.
Size wasn’t my problem tbh, they’re actually just stinky which I don’t think is talked about by a lot of people. You think you’re getting a dog but instead you bring a 5’ 11” ferret home. Granted, their size just makes them more gassy in general
I love my GD 🥺 but its true about teaching them not to jump up on people although my Great Dane is just a puppy, I have a great Pyrenees and dalmatian mix and she will just straight up give me bruises on my thighs from just trying to stand on me when im sitting, with just her two front paws i get bruises 😭WORTH IT THO
I know a couple who have a 50lbs dog that jumps, pulls and is frequently off leash with zero recall. The couple just adopted a second dog- it's a "Gladiator Great Dane" (mastiff x Dane mix). I'm so worried the Dane puppy is going to have all the same problems the 50lbs dog does but 100 times worse :(
Dont forget the masses of food (also cost) come out the other end just as massiv and their health is very bad they might get serious problem at the age of 8-9 already
Our great dane is a cherished part of our life. Yes he's big , but he doesn't jump on people, he leans against visitors, he doesn't chew thongs he should not.
And how long they live. Hardly ever see them older than 7-8. The oldest one I’ve met (the only one I met that was in its double digits) was 11. She was sweet
They are no joke. There was a 9 month old great dane that was playing with ny dog, but since my dog is much smaller in comparison, he was getting hurt under the weight of the great dane. I handle a rowdy German shepherd and can manage strong dogs, but i could not, for the life of me, move that puppy 😭 Edit: The dog in question is a husky mix, much smaller than my shepherd so i was concerned he’d be trampled
Great Danes are quite malleable. You with due firmness you can easily form behavioral traits that you need, practically at any age. Won't play fetch, though.
You're not a behaviorist, you're a dog trainer. These are vastly different things. There are less than 100 board certified veterinary behaviorists. To my ability to research your brand, you are not one of them, nor are you associated with any of them.
They have very expensive health issues. I thought about it. After some research I decided against it. They don’t live long. The whole thing just seemed like a expensive heart break.
