- Former Comair and OneTime CEO’s autobiography ‘Crash and Burn’ provides a fascinating insight into a career in South Africa’s highly visible, ever-turbulent airline industry. In the book, a filter-free Orsmond rips the bandaid obscuring truth behind the spectacular collapse of 70-year-old airline Comair - and much more. BizNews editor Alec Hogg describes it as a riveting read and in this interview, hears more of the back story of a value-destructive industry from the man dubbed its second most hated person.

The key lesson Boeing has taught us is that the further away accountants stay from the airline industry the better.
From about 22 minutes in, this story sounds so familiar. Had the same dilema, our assets had more value than liabilities, and the banks hit us hard, squeezed the blood from our cashflow.
I really enjoyed this.
An entrepreneur in the industry should do everything to avoid being involved in the race to the bottom.
There has to be a business model that is appealing to passengers and importantly sustainable.
“A respectable career”🤣🤣 That was funny. I just removed an accountant from my dogs rear.
My favoured comment, I once heard: "dog eats dog"
Hi Neil, i will expand on your statement, keep accountants from running any business. the biggest disaster is having them run sales and marketing and engineering companies.
Completely disagree - accountants have enormous success in most industries because if you don't understand finance your business is doomed to failure!
"I am Warren and I am an aeroholic ." Is how Warren Buffet started one speech. I wish I could find it because it was so hilariously brilliant. 👍🇿🇦
I only fly Safair internally. My partner needs assistance. Airlink is pathetic. Lift is too expensive and I have plenty legroom with Safair without someone bumping their seat back onto my knees
Seems to me the root cause was management ego in leasing shiny new aircraft. I'll bet those leases outweighed staff salaries by a mile. Let alone management benefits...
You cant afford tired, hungry.pilots.
Boasting about unethical behaviour. Wow. You know, slavery was how it was done in the old days...
Unions push for salary increases so their subs increase ,pretty extortianate if you ask me.
How the flipping hell do you think safety became such a crucial issue?? The FAA and America's litigious culture. Then it became a world standard. Jeez
