Nice productive day of fishing there. The advice to fish all conditions is the best advice possible because it makes faster learning automatic plus it's so easy to follow, especially for a guy like me for whom just being out there fishing is the #1 thing and if I catch fish it's icing on the cake. By the way, last Sunday I got a legal hali at Bolsa Chica, a tad under 23", on a LC metallic sardine about an hour after high tide. My son laughs that I've only caught two halibut, both of them legal. The first fish I caught that day was a 13+" yellowfin croaker and when my son asked how I was fishing the LC I said the Benjie Kim slow roll. I kept the hali as my son and I agreed that we'll only keep smaller legals and release any bigger ones we're fortunate enough to possibly catch. I learned a few things that day. First, change the hooks on your LCs as soon as you get them because that hali bent the rear hook so bad that the metal actually cracked. Second, the surfers can help you find structure because where they aren't might indicate soft structure in the form of holes or maybe rips. The hali I caught was in between surfers where the breakers went kind of flat because of the structure. I cast there only because the surfers weren't there but after I caught the hali I looked at the area and observed the action of the breakers. Now I really know what to look for because I've seen it with my own eyes instead of just on video. Finally, I heard that king tides force baitfish closer to shore and I was able to observe that firsthand, and I think it brought that actively feeding hali in despite there being no hard structure anywhere in the vicinity. We're going out tomorrow (Sunday) and I can't wait to find out what new things I'll learn. Tight lines, brother.
Man congrats on the legal....2 for 2!!!! Idk how it is for most folks but for me seems like I need to catch many shorts before that right kind. And kudos to you and practicing responsible take. Don’t get me wrong, legal take is legal take and no one should feel bad for legally keeping our catch. But I do believe if we all do our small part in keeping only what we need compared to filling buckets and freezers, our fishery can continue to be a flourishing and fun place for all of us. But that’s just me and I in no way impose that on others. While all the things you’re learning is so exciting, I think the thing that makes me most happy is seeing your love for this sport, enjoying the moment, and truly experiencing fishing for the positive activity that it is. Love it so much! Thank you for your continued support and while we’ve never met, I think it’s so cool to share this sport together thru the gift of social media. One day, hopefully we can share the sand 👍🤙
@@BenjieKimFishing What do you think about keeping halibut and other valuable fishery species? Should the smaller legals be set free and the biggers kept? I've knee-jerk done the opposite -- set a big one free and kept a barely legal. But I want to do the right thing. What do you think?
I love this particular stretch of beach because while its not MY spot, its a place I stumbled upon and spent MANY days and skunks trying to figure out. Feels so rewarding to go through a process and experience some results. Thank you for your ongoing support Ron, truly means a lot to me!

Hey Austin, I believe he is using a Flatlander...they are pretty much the best you can get for what we do. BUT they are very pricey and the dude that makes em on the East Coast often has a waiting list of 6 months or longer!

Your favorite "go-to" spot. You almost never fail there. Ideal halibut habitat. A long day but finally some action.
