    The Real Ghostbusters is a 140 episode American animated television series, a spin-off/sequel of the 1984 comedy movie Ghostbusters that aired from 1986 to 1991.
    As a Saturday morning cartoon and a daily series, behind the scenes of the Real Ghostbusters there was a lot more going on.
    From a disagreement over the name of the show with The Ghost Busters to ABC bringing in a consulting agency to make over some of the characters, The Real Ghostbusters story is so much more.

      I mean 2016 lowered the bar considerably. I mean I know 2 is divisive in the fandom but 2016 was just flat out a piece of crap start to finish, period. Afterlife at least looks like a loving a proper tribute to the series. I thought the way the cartoon showed that the Ghostbuster's movie was actually based on the lives of the cartoon ghostbusters was such a cool idea. It was the only time I can remember that an animated show based on a movie not only acknowledged the existence of the movie they were based, but the story line was written that the movie was only based on the shows characters, making them the REAL ghostbusters...

      I love how that episode also addressed why the cartoon characters look so different from the movie characters - they were played by actors the cartoon character never heard of.
      But something I've been wondering since rewatching that episode as an adult - in our world, the movie was a runaway success, which is why the cartoon series was made. In the cartoon world, the movie is based on actual events in their lives, but what if that movie proves to be as successful and spawns its own cartoon spinoff? Would that cartoon also have an episode where a movie is made? Does that movie in a cartoon in a cartoon also get a cartoon spinoff? How many layers deep would that go?

    • @tdtellem
      @tdtellem 2 роки тому +2

      Well that's just a rumor.
      It's been said that what actually happened is that Murray came to the studio where the show was made and while he was checking the show out he asked them why did his character sound like Garfield.
      They told him that it was the same voice actor for Garfield and then he just kind of nodded his head about it.
      The producers got nervous and decided to change the actor out with someone else for fear of Bill making a fuss about it later on.
      So basically no one is really sure why they changed Venkman's voice but it all sounds like an overreaction to Bill asking a question.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 2 роки тому +1

      @@tdtellem It's like the studio started the cartoon with "don't you DARE try to imitate the movie actors because they'll want money or something" but went on to "yeah, let's selectively have you imitate the actors." That said, I don't think Dave was that bad, mind you, he wasn't given anything GOOD to work with. He's actually pretty good in The Halloween Door when they got one of the original writers to give him witty dialogue and not making him the idiot of the group.

    • @tdtellem
      @tdtellem 2 роки тому +2

      @@mightyfilm and that's the issue with writing Venkman's character.
      He's the wise guy of the group but people often confuse that with being dumb.
      Even in the movies he's clearly brilliant. The guy has two Doctorate degrees. One in psychology in and I don't know what they tell others but being a doctor in psychology is not something you can outsource.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 2 роки тому +2

      @@tdtellem Yeah. Venkman is completely above it all, he does have a sense of duty, even though it may not be as strong as the others, but for the most part he treats everything like a big joke. And they kept that personality to heart in the GOOD portion of the TV show. Lorenzo may not sound exactly like Murray, but the casting is very much in the spirit of the movie character. Garfield's pretty much a character that's above it all and sarcastic, especially in the cartoon series where Lorenzo does his voice. But somehow in the later episodes of RGB, they wrote him as a moron that can't take things seriously, not as a cleverly sarcastic type that deep down thinks he's too good for his job, but as a dumb goofball. Which is a shame. Halloween Door is probably one of the last well written episodes, and Dave really gets to play the good version of Peter. That scene where he's clowning Slimer, only for the spud to ruin his date, turning it around on him is one of my favorites of the series.

    I grew up on this cartoon and it was many years before I found out there was a movie. I loved the idea of science being applied to stop the supernatural. Plus the music for the show was amazing. The music they played every time a ghost was caught would always end just as the trap snapped shut. Or this incredible emotional guitar theme they used. In the episode "Ragnaroc and Roll" when Datilio is trying to convince his friend not to end the world it played there.
    Or another episode was where the Ghostbusters were called by a ghost who didn't know he was dead. His niece and her husband thought they could scare him off with the white sheet routine. The Ghostbusters decided they couldn't just trap the poor guy but instead help him figure out his unfinished business to he could move on. In the end it was just that he wanted to say goodbye to his niece since she hadn't been able to get to him before he passed. You don't see writing like that anymore, at least not with any kind of real emotional gravity.

    Extreme Ghostbusters was actually really good and I thought that it managed very well to tell a good continuation in the same universe with darker, more personal stories. Not sure why they never thought of using that as a blueprint for the movie continuation.

    I still remember coming home from Kindergarten as a child. I think The Incredible Hulk would be on sometimes. But most days if I was lucky and got home right on time I could catch The Real Ghostbusters in the afternoon while I ate a PB&J, no crust. Absolute best time of my life.

    My little brother WAS a Ghostbuster basically, I have seen EVERY episode of this show, and literally played with EVERY toy it spawned. That Ecto-1 and firehouse were targets of aliens, shredder, decepticons , cobra and once, even gremlins....mogwi's specifically. Had the proton packs, traps, projectors.....everything.

    I remember when they first re-did Janine. 7-year-old me thought Season 3 Janine was kind of hot.
    Also, I always thought it was odd Dana Barrett was never in the animated series, but Walter Peck and Louis Tully were. And wasn’t the episode “Citizen Ghost” considered cannon even in the movie universe?

    I was about to cry foul, but you at least showed the greatest tie-in product ever; Ecto Cooler. LOL. That and the unrelated Purple-saurus Rex Kool Aide were my jam back in the 80s. I hope you make a video dedicated to just the toys soon. They were pretty cool and deserve a look at in their own right

      Total non-sequitur tangent for fans of Star Trek TNG, but in the episode ‘Relics’, when Scotty and Jean-Luc Picard are enjoying a drink on the holodeck TOS bridge .. that’s Ecto Cooler that the actors are downing. :)

    That explains why in Ghostbusters 2, when they were performing at a birthday party and they start singing their song and at the part where they say "Who you going to call?" the kids start chanting He-Man.
    I remember that hit me is odd because He-Man had ended a couple of years before that movie came out. And hadn't been around for a while.
    Also, I remember that same year a lot of good movies came out. Ghostbusters 2 didn't stand a chance. There was Tim Burton's Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Dick Tracy, and then there was Ghostbusters 2 after you've seen the first three movies multiple times.
