- A couple of demos comparing the AT4040 with the AT4033a. HPF is on in both cases. The audio was recorded using a Tascam DR680 MkII. No processing has been applied.
Listening to the demos, I'm inclined to think the AT4040 picks up more room and background noise than the AT4033a, which may make it less suitable for home recording, unless the room is treated in some way. I hear reflections in the AT4040, but less so with the AT4033a.
This is an untreated room. As I recorded, I could hear birds outside and the occasional motorbike, car or agricultural vehicle going by, and you may pick up some of that.
The AT4040 can be sibilant but seems much less so than the AT4033a; and I tend to think the AT4040 is a more natural sounding mic and the AT4033a is more of a 'character' mic, where that character is what you want.
I'd also say that the untreated AT4033a probably suits Podcastage Bandrew's voice better than mine, so you might wish to compare his video • Audio Technica AT4033a...
Overall, my take is that the 4033a is more of an instrument mic, given the sibilance it can produce, but of course like most mics it will surely suit certain voices.
I've included a couple of samples of my new Deering 17-fret tenor banjo, which I've fitted with a Renaissance head. I've only had the banjo for a fortnight or so, but like the spoken word demo I think the banjo demos reveal significant differences between the two mics.
Could I use a second AT4033a for stereo recording etc? I'm still on the fence!
