- Croque Monsieur, a very popular bistro snack in France and for good reason!
The French word “croque” meaning “to crunch” and “Monsieur” meaning “Mister” has been a common bar and cafe style meal that originated back in 1910. Most of the cafes today in Paris still have them on the menu and are commonly know just as a “Croque”.
It’s an addictive sandwich and rightly so, due to the crispy crunchy bread, hot ham and the golden melted cheese. In the video I used raclette cheese. Some make it without the Bechamel, but for a few extra minutes it’s well worth the effort.
Serve it with a well-seasoned crisp green salad.

Perfect!!! I lived in Paris for 8 months about 30 years ago and remember eating quite a few of these. Beautifully filmed and a beautifully construction sandwich!

Mmmmm this is absolute perfection. I'm writing this whilst being on a hard core 2 week Ayurvedic detox retreat where the food is beyond bland, basic and sparse. I spend most night watching 2-3 hours of these videos to satisfy my hunger lol . Luckily my stay comes to an end in 2 days time, then I'm off home to make this sandwich.

Really nice. Taking into consideration the bread and bechamel, that’s a lot of work for a sandwich at home. This is one of those things I would order in a cafe, but would very rarely decide to do it at home. It is, however, nice to have such a good example on how to make it at home. Probably the best I’ve seen. Congrats and thanks for posting it.

These reminded me of when I was younger;; My father used to make these for me and my sister for dinner on school days. We'd walk home then eat together while watching something. Made me a bit emotional thinking about back then haha. Thank you.

I always thought it was mayonnaise or a thick salad dip. now you have shown that it is a bechamel. what I've already learned from you on top possibly a herb of Provence. a salad as a side dish and dinner is ready. stay healthy. Wow! My adorable french classics… croque monsieur ( not sure in the spelling) and madam…. I am fighting with my extra weight, so there have been no these dishes for a long time on my table. But I love them so much…. Easy, quickly and very delicious….

Perfection, easy to follow. I have seen them finished off in a pan with cheese melting down the sides of the toast, but this is a classic version. Can't go wrong.

There are loads of cheeses on Amazon and London have cheese shops and online. Welsh Scottish .One London shop has 500 different types of cheese.

Now that is one beautiful looking, crunchy Cheese Sandwich Joel!! I have not tried Raclette (not sure if my local Woolworths or Coles stock it ) but use Gruyère a lot for melting😊
