- Here's how all four Xbox 360 Gears of War titles run on Xbox One under backwards compatibility. It's a mixed bag for sure, but Gears 1/2 hold up pretty well, Gears 3 has some issues but is still playable, while Gears Judgement... well, it needs some work.

Microsoft should remaster GOW 2, 3 and Judgement in HD at 60 fps just like The Definitive Edition.

Ultimate Edition doesn't run at 60FPS, it still runs at 30, but with improved graphics and updated cutscenes.

@@EnforcerX71 60fps on PC ;). The original PC vs from 2007 runs at crazy high framerates, I had mine locked at 144hz. They really need to get GoW2 and 3 on PC.
@@BrunoSantana16 A yeah when I made that comment I had a 2080 super. It definitely is poorly optimized, and you're right GoW4 is really well optimized. 5 has been running great for me as well.
Gotta be honest. Not an xbox guy, but Judgment looks spectacular for old gen!!! If the resolution would be bumped up to 1080p with a nice 4X antialiasing it would almost look current gen

+jippalippa Judgement for me had a very fun campaign mode especially if you completed all of the unclassified challenges. Story was worst of the series but still ok tho.

What an absolutely amazing video. love your content guys! this is exactly the video I wanted to see. it's really amazing that the X1 can actually emulate the 360 on playable levels at ALL! it is quite sad that they are generally missing the mark by a mere 7 FPS most of the time. they just need a LITTLE BIT more performance from the hardware and they would have nailed it. maybe more optimization in the future of developing the emulation or the next generation of XBOX will be able to emulate it flawlessly or with even better visual fidelity. it's nice to have the option to play on your new console though all things considered.

The game is totally playable on Xone. I've played all of the Gears game on it and enjoyed all of them. I bought one and received 5 games, is a very good deal...

Yes, the Games are good to very good playable, I had only a slowdown in GoW3 and then it was only for a second. It's really good for an emulated Game.

It simply amazes me how Gears Judgement was so unpopular. I even purchased this upon original release and did not actually try to finish it till 1.5 years ago. The game is not Gears 3, but it's visually a beautiful game and tons of fun. I feel that changing the way to select weapons was unnecessary and something "People Can Fly" should not have changed...great review.
at least I'm not paying 15 dollars for a remaster and call it backwards compatibility

Had my XboxOne X a week now and brought GOW Ultimate Edition, & will be buying GOW 2, 3, 4, 5 & Judgment. I only ever played the original GOW on the Xbox360 years ago now, so looking forwards to playing the rest of them.
Digital Foundry, do you think that the backwards compatible Gears games will utilise Xbox X's hardware, to at least provide a stable and constant frame rate for example? It would be nice if it did.

Hopefully Gears 2 and 3 will be properly remade like Gears 1. Would be a reason to get the One next to Quantum Break and Halo MCC.
Can you guys test the input lag of the BC games? People have noticed this issue
+Jon Cal It's caused by V-Sync always being on and a lower framerate. At least, I believe this to be the case as it usually is with PC's.
I just got my hands on gears since I bought a xb1s and I must say this is the best franchise I've ever played on any platform
Have played through Judgment twice since it came to BC. Didn't have any big complaints. I thought the early part of Gears 2 was rough, as well as the beach scene in Gears 3 on the silverback.
Any way we can get an updated video? Don't think that the assessment for Gears 3 and Judgement are accurate anymore.
They really need to do an updated video. I'm playing Gears 3 now, and don't have any problems with the framerate. It's smoother than Part 2. Haven't tried Judgement yet, but I hope it got an improvement as well now :)

What are you playing on a original xbox one or the s version ?.
I would love to see how the darkness runs it was never on pc like the second so we only have the last gen versions to play it.
I'm playing on the S version.
There was only one spot, where the framerate dropped pretty low, but it was very short, and never really became a problem. Otherwise, it was smooth sailing for me. Much better experience compared to playing on the 360.
Darkness isn't backwards compatible yet. But I'll bet it will run pretty good, when it arrives :)
I'm glad all the games have locked v-sync now, so we don't get that horrible screen tearing.
Does the XBO S provide significant gains in Gears 3 and Judgment?
I ended up playing Gear of War Judgement on the original console just a few weeks ago...it actually is a very impressive game considering the hardware it runs on...very impressed indeed...ironically, it was a great game with detailed textures of great quality. This game was released so close to Gears 3 that I bought the game, but barely played any of the campaign...it is an amazing addition that should not have been missed...now regarding the original Gears 3? I want it buried or cremated with me in the future...an Xbox 360 classic.
Could you please do a comparison of the Gears games running through backwards compatibility on the NEW Xbox One S? I wonder how it would play out with some of its internal upgrades.

I got an Xbox One S a couple of weeks ago. I tried Gears of War 3, the frame rate is not nearly as bad as it is on the regular Xbox BUT there is still a delay in controls (from when you press the buttons to when the character does the action) which isn't an issue on the Xbox 360. It's more "playable," but still not ideal. I'm just waiting for Gears of War 4.
There is no difference between the graphics or frame rate when it comes to backwards compatibly they're the same console
WindogePlayz, according to some other opinions online, it turns out that those games actually look and play better on the original Xbox 360, not the back compat versions. Supposedly the colors look washed out. Well I tried gears 360 on my new Xbox one S, and sure enough. Looks really washed out.

Is it true that since the last update the campaign consistently crashes after 15-30 minutes of playtime, or has it now been fixed???
it is, halo reach and gears 3 run almost at a steady 30 fps now.
TRITON K175 i've play all 3 gears games on xbox one, there are no crashes at all, but gears 2 is a little bit unstady with framerates but still playable, gears 3 is rocksolid 30 fps now, I haven't noticed any drops.
I wish you had covered multiplayer as well. There the frame rate drops are a lot more unacceptable. I really wanted to be able to play GoW3 multiplayer on XBO and found the performance made it very frustrating.

Plus does anyone know if you get a digital 360 copy of Gears 1-3 if you get it through the Gears 4 preorder bonus. At the moment I'm debating whether or not to by the game sperately. Thanks for help
yeah, there are DLC codes for GoW1-3+Judgment in the Standard-Edition; At least in the version I bought...I recently did play through Gears 3 with a friend of mine in splitscreen, runs smooth imo...
I just played all these 4 games on the Xbox One X and didn't experience any slowdowns at all as seen on this video rock solid 30fps on all games. GoW 3 is enhanced @ 4K and it looks amazing.
Is there any fps and resolution improvement over the 360?
I really wanted a remastered collection not the same thing. I want to replay these great games at 1080p60fps

you didn't mention the input lag. this also kills any hope of trying to play Gears3 MP.
Gears 3 multiplayer works great back on playing regularly again. Haven't played since Xbox one launch day.

there has been a few patches released since u made tht comment. and todays patch has really improved the framerate and input lag of the games to near 360 levels now.
When comparing GOW3, it would help if they put both FPS counters near the center.
Ah, the times when consoles actually lead the way for games. I still remember watching ads of this game in pure awe.

The cutscenes in Gears 1 & 2 were choppy on the One for me I switched to playing back on the 360 during gears 2 and the Cutscenes are much smoother.
I have Gears 1, 2, 3, and Judgement on my XOne. It's a series I've really wanted to get into. In fact Gears 1 was one of the main games I wanted before I got my 360. I never did get it though, on the 360. Eventually(somewhat recently) I got codes for all 4 when someone gave them away on Reddit.
Sadly, I was kinda disappointed when I sat down to play Gears 1. Not that I think the game is bad. I'm disappointed that I have such a hard time getting into it. The two biggest problems for me are the colors(or lack of), and the movement. The movement just never feels like I have enough control. You constantly get locked into an unnecessary animation, even when doing something as basic as sprinting or taking cover. Everything just feels sluggish and like you're trying to move through a pool of mud.
This is why I'll ALWAYS have an Xbox 360

Jochem its between Gears 2 BC and Gears 3 (in this video) kind of playable. (leaning a lil more to Gears 2 playable.) I even got done playing the single player campaign right before the most recent patch came out and I only noticed a frame drop here and there but wasnt as bad as it was shown here in this video months ago.
so what about multiplayer? is it not included in this emulated version? as good as single player is, multiplayer is where replay value comes in for myself. gears 3 multiplayer kept me up until 5am countless times. judgement just needed some more gears 3 in it to be great. the speed of the game was good, but bringing back the 2 piece was a mistake (along with dropping the locust).

Funny thing is they have patched GoW 3 and judgment so they run nice now, especially 3, but since 2 run ok first time around that one wasnt update as these two so it actually runs worst of bunch now.

For some reason Judgments sensitivity settings are real stiff on the One.
While this video was nice, I would've liked to have seen multiplayer comparisons. I tried playing Gears 3 on Xbox One the other day and it was almost unplayable for me. it feels like the game is always trying to catch up to what buttons I'm pressing and it just feels really sluggish.
I did not buy a X1 to play 360 games, so I just play my 360 games on that. BC is free, something MS didn't think was possible when the X1 launched so I have no complaints about BC.
+nufrequency84 It isn't the fault of the Xbox One. It's difficult simulating the triple core CPU on the 360. Especially thanks to the PowerPC architecture. It's getting better, though.
remember Xenon was based on a variation of the CELL processor. so it has 3 PPU cores (revised and improved upon the original PPU of the CELL) but no SPUs whatsoever. so it had actually a bunch of power without the complexity of the CELL

You set a bad tone on every video you put up about xbox BC games and xbox one standard games in general. All this microscopic nitpicking does is feed trolls and fanboys, no good comes from it all. Why bother... not as if the videos get that big of view count to warrant doing it either. Xbox users will still play the games regardless of how they run if they own them and hating fanboys wont even consider in playing these games regardless of how well they run on the system they hate. Stick to your PC component comparisons and leave the console shit, it's toxic.

It's just a fact that a slow machine cannot emulate properly almost as fast machine. It's a general rule of multiply 10. Xbone isn't as nearly as 10 times faster than X360, there's your problem.

Backwards compatiblity for Xbox One is a great concept on paper but the execution seems to leave a lot to be desired when it comes to Microsoft's own games, strangely enough.
I never had the chance to play these games on 360. So even if the experience on xbox one is not optimal, that's what i got.

Interesting to see how different old 360 games respond to the newer hardware. Some seem to fall apart under the new CPU, and some seem to run better than originally.

gow judgement without a doubt has the best graphics on 360 and ps3. I have both systems, trust me the amount of detail and the quality of the textures is on par with games early in this gen xb1 ps4. developers people can fly had better dev Kit's when it came to the xb360, the graphics are really that good. some of it stems from the fact that they used the most feature set version of unreal engine 3. story wise I did enjoy judgement very much! they dropped the ball with the multiplayer though! very weak game modes for mp and no horde mode was the nail in the coffin. if you haven't played the campaign, play it you wont be disappointed.
and the game if was ported or adapted to PS3 would need drastic reductions to even run at a playable speed. Unreal Engine 3 never worked well on PS3 since most of the stuff implemented for the 360 had to be implemented by hand on the PS3 and only a few team really had the patience and time to actually implement it
I expected nothing, and i'm still let down.
Judgment was and still is the BEST of the franchise.

No excuse it's previous Gen games, I can understand frame drops by like 2 or 3 frames but any less is disgusting
played gow 1 on xbone and it was terrible...20-25 fps....

You never once mentioned the crazy amount of input lag for the controls in gears 3. The others don't have it either making gears 3 the worst one to play on xbox one.
Todays update has really improved on tht input lag.
What about the Framerate?
i don't understand why they don't just put actual 360 hardware in the xbox one and run the games natively instead of relying on emulation that can't get the job done
