This has been very informative! I knew all these phrases but i wasn't aware of the subtle uses in conversation.
Thank you! It sure can be tricky to take a hint in another language.
Well, I mostly Italian, Polish, and Ukrainian so, I find most of us to be bold and up front. No guessing just straight up No lol!
Useful!
This is spot on! I never thought about it before. But yes, we want to say no without causing offense. If you keep pushing for an answer and not taking the hint we will eventually say no but we will feel ashamed and a bit annoyed for having to do so.
I also use ”jag är inte säker” or ”jag är osäker” (I’m not sure) usually leaning towards no
A чи бувають випадки коли шведи таки скажуть Nej? På vilken situation svensk ska sa "Nej"?
I would never say no to you, Joakim. Discord Squad!!!
Jag skulle aldrig säga nej till dig, Joakim.
I would never say no to you, Joakim! :)
I would never say "no" to you, Joakim. only "maybe".
tusen takk for alt du gjør for oss joakim C:
Tack för att du tittar!
@@sayitinswedish jeg lærer norsk men jeg også ser på dine videoer, de hjelper mig så mye! Og svenska er et veldig vakkert språk :)
Jag vet inte. - Isn't that very much, "I don't know" because I dont your intentions, Or I don't have the facts to say yes/no, or agree?
Sure, it means "I don't know" but it can be used to express hesitation although you do in fact know.
In English a polite way of saying no could be....I'd rather not.
Luke, jag är din far.
Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeej!
Är det verkligen så?
Luke, Leia är din syster!
MaYbe i know some different swedes, they say nej eller inte/icke without excuses. I mean is far politier to say directly nej, eller jag vill inte/icke than give false hope.
You're view of polite doesn't matter in a Swedish world, though. That's why I made this video, so you'll understand that it rather means no. Also, never ever does every cultural trait apply to every single person in that culture. I think you understand that.
@@sayitinswedish Jag förstår kille.
discord squad!
I would never say no to you, Joakim

"Shall we be friends?" I called to the Swede as they walked away.
"Ja, vänner," came the response.
Or so I thought 😔
HAHAHA! GOLD!
No. I won't promise that I would never say no to you, Joakim. I tend to prefer direct and sincere answers :)
edit: replaced "honest" with "sincere", because I had used it originally, but lost it just before posting.
😒
My swedish aunty always says a straight up blunt "no" haha interesting to discover shes the exception not the rule! It's very disarming for someone who lives in the UK. Joachim, is there a difference when someone says a soft/normal nej vs a hard pronunciation of nej as N-iii ?
I mean, it's different if you're family than if your strangers or colleagues. So it's not odd if your aunt is more blunt with you.
No, there is no difference really in how you say nej. Except maybe if you prolong the syllable it will sound more unsure and thus more polite.
This is pretty much a 1:1 with English, especially British English which has a way of making the most rude sentences sound nice.
For Example: “Good luck” can be positive or negative depending on the context.
Sarcasm do exist in Sweden too 😉
So like, everything other than "yes" is basically "no"?
Basically, yeah. Or at least strongly leaning towards "no".
About me liking the closeup shots of your face: Vi får se!
You like them enough to mention them!
I always thought it was nej or most phrases that involve inte.
Of coures, but this video is about culture. I did explain it, so if you actually watched the video, you would understand.
@@sayitinswedish I appologize for my ignorance.
