My Grandfather gave me a doll that he said had been brought to America by our Great Great Great Grandmother during the Potato Famine. The doll was a parting gift to her from her Sunday School class and was almost 200 years old. A family treasure. My Grandmother took one look at the doll and said, "Your Mother bought that doll in an Antique store in 1965 and paid $25 for it!"
I think your grandfather probably bet his drinking buddies that he could make you display a doll in your house.
LMAO! So funny!
If feels wrong that the chair isn't worth more. It's a beautiful chair though... keep your grandma's chair lady. It's worth more in family legacy then it's worth in cash.
worth more?? its just a bunch of sticks put together. I was surprised that he put such a large estimated value on it honestly. it did not take much skill to make these back in the day.
Monetary, sentimental and comfort are 3 very different values.
Old Hickory Chair Company still exists. If you do a Google search for them, they still produce rustic furniture. I don't know if they are entirely the same company they once were, but they definitely still exist.
Years ago I received some very good advice from an older collector: 1) do you really like/love this piece, 2) will it bring some form of long term pleasure into your life, and, 3) if it’s value decreases below what you paid, will you still be happy you bought it and 4) can you afford it? From myself…1) if you get into something learn as much as you can about it so you have a chance at recognizing between what’s real and what’s fake before you buy a lot 2) accept that it’s value is likely to fluctuate based on a list of reasons including the economy itself 3) avoid fads. I have followed that advice for decades and still smile when I look at the items in my collections. And I can say most of my items have generally performed much better than the stock market or a savings account. That value, however, is not as easily accessed in an emergency.
Our granfather was a cabinet maker/wood worker and we have all the furniture he made for his home❤
She is enthusiastic. Uses and … and … and … there is a childlike enthusiasm and intellect about her
Are you saying that you think she is an idiot?
A Roadshow without David Walker is like a rocking chair without a grandma to rock you
I always expect the auctioneer to say "bout a hundred dollars" (Rainman movie reference).
Judge Wapner bang's the gavel. "Sold! One pair of K-Mart underwear."
"Things" can have a money value, a utility value, a memory/family history value. Sometimes the family history value can't be measured in any amount of money.
It's in great shape. Well-made.
"I would estimate it at one to two thousand dollars"
"Wow! [that sucks]"
Thank You for another Great Episode!
The memories are what give it value.
I have an old hickory antique rocker. I bought it at an estate sale for $45 but it’s worth thousands. The one that looks like it was made out of a tree. 😊
I wouldn't say grandma lied. Grandma was probably poor and embellished the story to make it look like she owned something more valuable than she really did. Some times poor people do. Some times the story itself is more valuable.
@Thomas So you’re saying she lied?
Most likely the tale was woven while rocking a child who needed to hear a story so they'd go to sleep.
Grandma may have been lied to by a dishonest salesman.
It could simply have been what she was told.
Beautiful rocking chair! But! What I noticed right away is, that this is not the same chair that was photographed with the young grandfather! Yet his letter was about a rocking chair. Brightest Blessings. ☺️✌️♥️🦋🙏
The picture is just one of her grandfather and has nothing to do with the chair or her story Captain Obvious.
"It's hickory"😂
2:57 Sad tuba is sad.
With inflation that chair has the same value as firewood now.
Thanks to trump for the inflation
@@johnhurtme Come on, it's a worldwide phenomenon.
@@johnhurtme just gotta take a shot at your boogeyman, huh
@@johnhurtme that fool has done plenty of crap, not sure inflation is one of them.
@@johnhurtme John buttHurt probably never had anyone to rock him in the chair so he lives off perpetual anger 😁
The chair may well be as old as the lady said it is. As for the bolt and nut, it may have been added later to stabilise the rocker.
Or it could have been exactly what the appraiser said it was.
Are we not going to talk about the fart noise at the end of the video?
Trombone
@@silliaek oboe or bassoon
I love it and her lol
Serious Kate Bush vibes
maybe if Kate Bush was a super conservative mom that home schooled her kids....
Large pieces of brown furniture just aren't wanted in smaller modern homes
Tell us you know nothing about the Hickory rocker without telling us you know nothing about the hickory rocker.
Turns out it's an early fake of an earlier fake.
AND I think it's worthless
The family history makes it absolutely priceless ❤️
@@Racheljohnsoooon to them
and
Get rid of this guy 😂
I liked him.
Yeah, this idget actually asked her what an Old Hickory is made out of... total waste of time.
AAAAAAAND..............grandma lied aaaannnd...its worthless.
Do young women not hear themselves ? Why do they want to sound like children ?
Who's paying 1k for that ugly chair?
Most people aka the market.
People just like her.
I like it. I wouldn't pay 1k for it, but I think it's a nice chair.
Nobody now, but that was 16 years ago.
Sounds like a Mickey Mouse type voice.
I love when the roadshow updates these prices, the price drop by fully 2/3 is tacit admission that they completely overvalued it then
Not necessarily. Antiques and art go through trends and things that were fairly cheap 20 or 40 years ago may have skyrocketed in price, while other types of items may have stagnated or depreciated.
Just means interest in objects like this has decreased
Nonsense. You should really study supply and demand, to understand how markets work. Value changes over time. 16 years later, everybody can see how plainly ugly this chair is, and nobody wants it. Back then, this style was probably on TV and more people wanted it... which makes the price go UP.
Isn’t the whole Antiques roadshow show a scripted lie?
