A day trip to Cologne Zoo/Köln Zoo/German Zoo

Cologne Zoo is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in Germany. More than 10,000 animals are at home here. This makes it one of the most diverse in all of Europe. Its motto is: "Enthusiastic about animals".
Among the main attractions is the elephant park, which opened in 2004. It is the largest north of the Alps. Equally spectacular is the Hippodom, completed in 2010 to mark the zoo's 150th anniversary. The spacious adventure house features an African river landscape, home to hippos, Nile crocodiles and sitatunga antelopes, among others. In 2014, the Clemenshof opened its doors. The lovingly designed replica of a small farm typical of the region with a petting zoo for children gives rare native species a home.
The rainforest house is also particularly popular with visitors. It shows animals and plants from one of the most endangered natural paradises on earth, the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Built in the mid-1980s, the rainforest house for apes is intelligently designed so that visitors can observe the primates at close range without disturbing them. In this way, the Cologne Zoo continues to set standards throughout Europe. In the aquarium, visitors experience countless species of fish, reptiles and insects on three floors.
The historic animal houses are also attractive. They include the monkey rock from 1914, the elephant house built in Moorish style in 1863 or what is now known as the "South America House" from 1899, which is architecturally modeled on a Russian Orthodox church. The combination of old buildings, modern houses and the park landscapes designed with great attention to detail by the zoo's horticulturists is what gives Cologne Zoo its special charm and its continuing high level of attractiveness.
