I love FCO colors. He just uses interesting color palettes to make the pages looking amazing and uniform

One thing I love about Capullo is his use of shapes, it makes his drawings a hundred times more interesting.

I love this book. It helped me get a better gauge on the range between tight vs loose pencils.

My first Greg Capullo stuff I believe was on X-Force. I loved his larger shaped figures. They weren't little skinny figures. I did buy some of his Spawn stuff but Spawn really wasn't for me. But Batman. Jim Lee and Greg Capullo have done some of the best looking Batman stories in quite some time and they couldn't be more different in their approach. I have the HUSH, the David Finch book, all 3 Capullo unwrapped and the Justice League one. I really wish Marvel would do the same and not just the single issue Director's Cut books. Thanks for the exploration videos. Great hearing your insights into this stuff as a professional in the business.

Greg is a fantastic visual storyteller. I became a huge fan of his from his Spawn days. If I was an inker I would be terrified inking his work (considering how loose his pencils are) lol... It also helps that Glapion is a fantastic artist himself. His originals are really impressive.. Classic series of books.

This is one of my favorite Batman stories of all time. I liked Greg's work before...but the storytelling on this was incredible. More than anything else I loved the storytelling...and then the inks really finished all those drawings, a tracer would be lost.

I just read this a few weeks ago, so fun follow up! I personally, would have no problem inking this. If it was an inker I'd worked and gelled with, I would potentially go even looser on pencils. Currently my pencils are just layouts before I ink, but I'll render out certain things first.
I think currently, 1. Many more artists are inking themselves (albeit, there's way more ghosting happening than I hear anyone talk about,) and 2. There aren't as many of those teams anymore, or the pages are getting split up for publishing schedules. Been kind of going back through my Kubert collection, and those brothers were barely drawing sometimes, lol. Recently, Matteo Scalera, Shawn Crystal, and Murphy come to mind, but again, guys who ink themselves. I'll roll through my feeds and see if anything jogs my memory.

The David Finch one and Tony Daniel ones are really cool also. Wish I had these 20 years ago to learn from. And better yet they are printed like that one.

Greg is crazy good, plus he was very nice to everyone I know who has met him. That always makes me feel better about anyone when you find out they are good people. Same reason I can’t knock Liefeld. He was nice to me when I was some punk teen bugging him.

I had a friend who was a pretty big fan of the Court of Owls when it came out. I remember thumbing through an issue or two at a coffee shop, but just couldn't get into it because the cartoony look generally just isn't my thing and didn't seem appropriate for the tone of the story, or at least my immediate impression of its tone. Remember thinking how Jae Lee could've really nailed it.
What's staggering to me at seeing these pencils is just how sloppy they are like sketchy layouts without any line weights whatsoever that are only the basic beginning of drawings. So the inker Johnathon Glapion and colorist FCO, to a lesser extent, really brought it home and deserve way more credit in my book.
A current Bat book that I'm very entertained with in story and in killer, although cartoonish, art is the White Knight...knocking it out of the park!

I am guessing White Night is the Sean Gordon Murphy book? I haven't seen it yet...he's good so I am sure it's a nice looking comic!

Oh yeah, his story and character concepts really drive it, and the art is grrreat! Ya know something is extraordinary when it converts you to its flavor...I don't usually drink beer, but when I do...it's wearing a Sean Gordon Murphy label. Kinda like country music, I couldn't care less...but if it's Willie Nelson, pass me a Murphy beer. Hell I might have to make a video.

Jonathan Glapion inked Capullo on Haunt before Batman so he might be used to Greg's lose pencils... that shows the importance of team work !

right I did know that. and I agree...the longer a team is together generally the more their language gels.

I have mixed feelings about this sort of pencils, to me the penciller is throwing the burden to the inker but comics have to meet a deadline I guess. I prefer more tight and finished pencils but loose enough for the inker to have fun.

I just bought a widowmaker action figure I've been wanting for years off Ebay can't afford much. But this thing is one to have. Coming from China! let's see if I get it. I caught Capollo's stuff on X force. I said to myself then as I do now. He's one of the best. Another guy who's great is Joe Madurei. I think I spelled his name wrong. Sue me.

Don't you think the issue with new pencillers not being as loose as the more stablished ones have something to do with the editors preference towards hiring artist with tighter more detail focused drawings? I understand there's other factors involved, and it's natural for artists to let loose as they continue to get more comfortable.

I work digitally and MY GOD am I guilty over zooming in and overworking a page or panel, and it wasn't until I complained to my girlfriend and she made me go over why I thought I was so slow that it hit me how much unnecessary work I was doing.

I find it interesting that over time an accumulation of inker’s approaches to a particular penciler become what we think of as that artist’s style. I was watching Sandra Hope inking JR JR and she was putting in all of the characteristic marks I think of as his style over fairly loose pencils that didn’t have any of that detail.
