This is more common in bodybuilders who take up boxing. I have two friends that this happened to. Both bodybuilders. My first boxing coach had the same injury. It's was that exact position (as in this video) in both cases that precipitated the tear... kind of an extended power hook (poor form). Biceps are very important in boxing, in bodybuilders the biceps are conditioned SLOWLY under resistance over years and the biceps of bodybuilders are usually 'shortened' distally. In boxing, biceps are conditioned for speed and are naturally WELL STRETCHED from years of extending their arms while boxing and are accustomed to stress when the arm is extended. The first thing I do with a bodybuilder is explain how important it is to go slow and stretch the biceps over time, and focus on good form. They are so strong that they can easily strain, and sometimes tear a bicep as they are learning to box.

5-years ago I ruptured my distal biceps tendon. Eccentric load lifting a TV. But I was also a varied grip deadlifter, so I’m sure I had wear abs tear. This video was like my situation, hook test, surgery 3-days later. I think the one thing our doctor fails to mention is the timing, if you think you have done it, do the hook test, see a surgeon and get it done. The recovery and success are VERY dependent on turn-around. I had mine within a week of rupture, my surgeon was busy enough he said he wouldn’t do one more than 5 weeks old. My BIL ruptured his, waited 4-5 weeks and his recovery was more than 9-months, and he was in an imobilizer for 60 days. I had an ace bandage. If you do it get it fixed immediately. He's throwing a hook with an extended elbow (it should be closer to a right angle), which increases the moment of inertia that the target exerts on that joint via the forearm. Beyond that, he's sparring with what look to be (generously speaking) at least 10 oz gloves, which extend the point of impact to an even farther distance from the joint. AND, the rotation of his torso is such that, although he is rotating back and forth from left to right with each punch, the midpoint of his rotation is far to the right of his opponent, meaning his left arm is extending more laterally than to the front during the punch. That means that the upper part of his upper biceps are under load more than they would be if he were punching in a more squared-off, forward-facing manner. The combination of that load on the upper biceps with the torque on the hand and forearm on the lower biceps was too much for him. No surprise there, considering how much core rotational strength he must have in his legs and torso, and the fact that he most likely has rather stiff wrist wraps on under those gloves. Even for someone with biceps as strong as his, that's too much. Edit: Gotta say that the question isn't whether the "punch" is a strong or weak one, it's whether the muscle is under a high amount of tension at that moment or not. And a punch thrown by someone whose technique is compromised will be fraught with a high amount of unnecessary tension. I guarantee his bicep was already near its maximum load before it even made contact, and so when it finally did, the punch was weak because of all the counterproductive force he was applying to his own body, and the force in the muscle peaked to higher than it could handle. It's absolutely not suprising at all that a punch like this caused an injury like this, and in no way would the weak impact of the punch suggest that an injury from it would be unlikely. In fact, the weak impact is suggestive that the punch was thrown with a highly-incorrect form, which in turn suggests a high likelihood of injury. Regarding the "unusually low amount of force" comment around 2:10
I ruptured my bicep tendon at the shoulder, I was in the gym. I have been a competitive swimmer my entire life, I was stupid overdid in the gym. It is a painful injury. Surgery was not terrible. More pain pre operation
With all these high profile tendon injuries occurring recently, I wonder if there's some cost-effective means to monitor tendon health and intervene prior to needing surgery? If someone knows their tendon is unhealthy has tendonopathy is there something they can do to strengthen it and restore it or will it just continually get worse over time?
Intervening would be to stop using it and let your body repair it. You weaken it by overuse and subjecting it to a load. Take that away and your body will have the time it needs to repair it and strengthen it. It’s why resting for athletes can be so vital but also a fine line to walk for them.
One way to help a tendon heal is to do high reps of low intensity resistance exercises but you only do the eccentric part of the movement. So for example you use both hands to lift a dumbbell up and then you slowly lower it with one hand to train your bicep, then you lift it up with both hands again to restart at the top
How about just avoiding it all by having good technique and not going max weight all the time Edit: Oh yeah, also dont use steroid. Almost forgot about that

I wouldn't say it's unusual! Exact same rapture happened to me throwing exact same punch! Block got on a way of my hand while arm was in awkward position and it snaped just like his
I've boxed since being 12 years old (now 24) I never had a bicep injury before but I have torn both left and right bicep tendons this year in this exact same situation.
Always. Deadlift with supinated grip, tyre flip, atlas stones. Jamie reeves, Jon Paul s, Brian shaw, shahlei, Hollands, felix, Poundstone, Larry wheels, Eddie hall!!, Luke Richardson, Eddie Elwood…. Anyone seeing a common theme here…..
After 15 yrs now I finally know what my injury is. I got this injury from playing semipro football and never could find out what the problem was. Ive had MRI and there was no tear seen. Is this fixable after 15 yrs?
So last week dr. Mark Morrery at Mayo Clinic repaired my anteriorly torn bicep tendon labrum SLAP tear and three massive rotator cuff tears on my left arm. It just feels strange the bicep pulling from a different area. Will that become less noticeable over time? And before they sent me home and put in one of them catheters you know to do a little bit of a long-term block for me it must have worked its way out because I have noticed I was getting wet around my neck. By the time we figured out what it was it looks like I've been chemically burned on my chest and on the back of my neck I can't believe that this medicine they use to numb like that can destroy skin like it did my main question was though will this weird feeling go away of it pulling from a different area
Not done watching yet but you mention chronic degeneration. He was recovering from a torn bicep on “strongest man in history” but unless there’s some mirroring going on in that or this clip, I’m pretty sure they were opposite arms. But that was a long time ago. Not sure if any of this is relevant. Could it have to do with his massive deadlifts in the past?
It happened to me yesterday good thing it wasn't a complete tear but I see deformity in the upper inner of my bicep I hope once I recovered it will look Normal again. It is also a lead hook and I didn't feel it while I was doing it repeatedly on the heavy bag and once I got home my left arm feels heavy and I can't flex my bicep, I don't know if it was my technique that causes it or my arm is just too weak to absorb the impact weirdly enough I am left handed so I expected that it will be more used to absorbing more impact than my right.
Never hook unless you're going for the face, way too much force from the body to stop that tendon to ho forward causing enough pressure to snap, specially the weight behind eddy.
I guess that the side hook to the sparring partner caused a radial bone shockwave to the origin of the Biceps, causing a muscle spindle reflex and a Golgi tendon reflex, which resulted in the tear. Overextension plus shockwave can induce a contractile response due to the muscle spindle fibers

@@TeemoQuinton He’s horrible.
Love your channel🔥
I’ve been waiting for the doctor to analyze all the injuries in the Olympics like sandy morris injury if he could break that down that would help me understand the injury
Great video!! Question , I tore my long head proximal bicep a year ago and didn’t get it fixed. Would it be too late to have it put back on ?
That is why you never punch from the side like that. Best punches are straight ahead.
He is a beast ... his little punch isnt little 😂😂😂
Nice Tropics Jersey! Hoping for a fun season!
9:00 Confirmed that "pumpy things" is formal medical terminology.
Snapped mine moving trees Fallin in the driveway from hurricane ... lifted then forward toss was like a rubber band bent than snapped straight..popped my bicep tendon right of the forearm bone ...waited almost 4wks to have surgery ! Then wrapped in brace..then wore a adjustable brace for awhile while doing PT.. took awhile but fully healed and functional!
Thank's Brian..!👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Good Job🤠 De hoy en adelante tendré mucho cuidado en No sobre esforzar mis músculos..!😉 Saludos desde 🇪🇨
hi doctor brain nice breakdown and explanation. is there any early signs people can watch for to detect a possible injury like this before it happens, if identified what steps can u take to prevent an injury like this ?
That is why there is a proper way to throw punches specially with the hooks..not wind it up so much that may cause injury..hope eddie hall gets better soon..
Would like to see a breakdown of Josh Naylor’s ankle fracture
You are a saving grace for med school
Please do a Jack Eichel Herniated disc Video there is two opposing viewpoints on the surgery or treatment curious to see why one side does and doesn’t want surgery
When he said "snap" I think I felt it!!
I’m on day two after surgery 😭
Do you think those wrist/forearm rollers pose a reasonable risk for bicep tear? Or are the mechanics different from what causes tears?
The brute strength of eddie is what caused his injurie, thats why it's a highly unusual injury.
Is there a hook test for the upper head of the biceps? both insertions.
This same thing happened to me playing soccer... I ruptured my right quad two yrs later ruptured my left quad
Imagine the balls on the person who says: "Yeah, sure Eddie, I'll spar with you."
Upper body tendon ruptures happen almost exclusively in steroid users. There's studies that support this
But Eddie is natural bro. WSM is drug testes!!11!
Always. Deadlift with supinated grip, tyre flip, atlas stones. Jamie reeves, Jon Paul s, Brian shaw, shahlei, Hollands, felix, Poundstone, Larry wheels, Eddie hall!!, Luke Richardson, Eddie Elwood…. Anyone seeing a common theme here…..
I just tore mine and I don't even use pre workout...

Had a proximal bicep tendon tear during Muay Thai and just had surgery a couple weeks back. What is the prognosis for returning to combat
Please review Bassa Mawem injury in his olympic sport climbing run!! 😱
Can you make a video about Aron Baynes neck injury that may keep him sidelined all '21-'22?
How long does recovery topically take?
Would love to see a video covering the Ronald Acuna injury.
Good for you walter
How do we prevent this from happening to us other than not smoking and juice? Are there any warning signs leading up to the tear?
This is way more common than he thinks with boxers
I wonder if Eddie let the doctors borrow some of his needles…
LOL
🤣
This happened to me back in October of 2020. Dr said there’s nothing they can do. Wondering if surgery is still an option?
After 15 yrs now I finally know what my injury is. I got this injury from playing semipro football and never could find out what the problem was. Ive had MRI and there was no tear seen. Is this fixable after 15 yrs?
Bruh, why do I still lift? I’m questioning my life choices lol
Watching your video is I can't do supernation and pronation due to beachial plexus injury which basically killed my biceps, from 2006. Nerves, fun..
THIS HAPPENED TO MY LEFT BICEP, PIC IN THUMBNAIL..ARM WRESTLING IN 2007
So last week dr.
This guy's a Dr. With half a million subscribers and still puts ads in his video. Like bruh how much more money do you need
Everyone gangster until they are in dr Brian sutterer’s thumbnails
I’ve not been boxing for too long but one of the first things you learn is to simply not throw a punch like that. He’s ill prepared for the fight.
Haha that punch is so wrong it's funny
Does regional anesthesia reduce motor neuron activity or is it purely sensory ?
