This kind of content could really legitimise GB news and help it gain popularity. Someone not scared to go against orthodoxy and has his own mind (Cleese) and a serious scholar (Orr) BBC, ITV etc don’t want to have these types of discussions as to them they have already been solved (by them!). So they are busy talking about which gender they are this week
We “sense that there is a will that is behind all things, and we’re also aware of our own will, and it’s the distance between those two wills that creates the mystery that we call religion.” Leonard Cohen,1986
Who can say anything better than Leonard Cohen. The definition of religion is: that to which we are bound. We are bound to Reality; all three dimensions of it: Consciousness; Mind; Elements. Not just to the elements as the materialist Darwinian perspective has it. There is much more to us than the reductiveness of materialism implies.
For me believing that the scientific evidence that Turin Shroud is real if enough...the latest evidence is astounding!! Good Show. John Cleese is now 84 and has created a really well thought out show. I have watched nearly every one.
I remember in anthropology class learning about Pacific Islands who had matrilineal societies, (lineage comes from mother's side). Children were raised by their mothers and uncles, as the biological fathers were busy raising their sister's kids. When the Christians missionaries showed up, they had a hard time converting the locals. The core concept of "God is our father" did not translate to their way of living.
At its root, religion is belief in something supernatural and sacred (in the root meaning of those words) that attempts to answer five questions. 1. Why is there anything? 2. Why am I here? 3. How do I live my life? 4. Where is the justice I am denied? 5. What happens when I die?
Religion actually means to bind us back to the beginning, from the Latin religare ('to bind'). It is more to do with our birth rather than our destination, which is to reject religion and the supernatural and embrace the truth in science. Science alone has the answers. Religion poses more questions.
All the comments here are primitive attempts to partake in a conversation obviously too abstract for most without formal education - both the religious and irreligious commenters. Rip.
There are many religions but the only ones which count are the ones which involve irrefutable evidence of insight into the future which cannot possibly have existed, at the time of the authoring of those scriptures, by chance alone. Of course it means removing the rose tinted glasses or blindfolds to actually find out what those supernatural insights are .... The epitome of arrogance is guesswork with great gusto. Why leave anything to chance?
Christianity , Buddhism Jainism, Hinduism all have a morality system, therefor I consider these religions ( good ideologies) now Islam is the opposite of these
Going to Heaven is easy! First, you must realize that the punishment for committing even one sin, unless you are forgiven, is eternity in hell. To be saved from hell and forgiven of all sin, believe that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Cor 15:1-4). When you believe that Christ’s atoning work paid for all your sins and when you make Jesus your only hope of going to Heaven, you are forgiven of all sin by God and forever saved from hell. Warning: None of our good deeds can get us into Heaven. If we trust in our own works to get us to Heaven instead of Christ’s atonement, we will not be allowed in. The Bible says “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5). In conclusion, just believe that all your sins are paid for by Jesus’ atoning work and make Christ your only hope of going to Heaven.
Your comment is interesting because it highlights a paradox of our existence. Believing we exist and that the universe exists is believing the unbelievable. Shows the inherent metaphysical assymption in every way of navigating reality.
Religion. 1) Blaming your imaginary friend and taking no responsibility for your own actions. 2) Stating your imaginary friend is the only true imaginary friend.
I'm unsure if your comment is gaslighting? You seem to be poking fun at the primitive segment of materialists? Or is this a serious attempt at partaking in the conversation? If this essentially academic discussion of religion and metaphysics is too abstract for you, why comment at all?
Something created by people in power (Roman empire) when it's going down hill using some Jewish book but it didn't work but some beduoin salesmans did okay !
The weak-minded pursuit of answers to questions of no-concern to beings with such limited life-spans. Without opposible thumbs, language and the ability to co-operate effectively we would have never progressed past big cat, wolf or bear food.
There is no progress. From a materialist point of view - and this is likely true - we are nothing but hallucinating stardust. Any attempts at pursuing an understanding of a reality which is nothing but chaos and entropy is essentially weak-minded, thereby making the natural sciences weak-minded. It's the hard truth of existence.
Love listening to James Orr

3. Religion does not ask that question but the question: How SHOULD I lead my life.
Most religions are incorrect beliefs with some good ideas.

Christianity is NOT a religion , it is a relationship with God through Jesus,

@@basileus-pr6jh. I suppose there must be something. And if there is something it must be infinite because what’s the “other side” of something.

A bit like the doctrines of the pseudo-patriotic Farage cult.

The definition is total indoctrination.
Primitive take. If the question is too abstract for someone without formal education why attempt to comment at all?
