  • Part eight of my solo backpacking adventure from Bryce Canyon National Park to Bears Ears National Monument. This episode includes visiting the archaeological sites in the upper portion of Grand Gulch such as Split-Level Ruin and Junction Ruins. After exiting the canyon via Kane Gulch, I continue my journey toward Bears Ears via The Cedars Pioneer Trail and then a short excursion to Natural Bridges National Monument. After a great camp near Maverick Point, I tackle the final stretch of hiking to the Bears Ears iconic buttes.

** NOTE ON THE TERM "RUINS"
Throughout this series I use the term "ruin" to refer to the various archaeological sites throughout the canyons of the southern Utah. It's been brought to my attention that many indigenous people prefer the term "ancient structures" or "ancestral sites." Though still not reflected in official BLM Material, the Bears Ears Visitation Materials does suggest this updated verbiage. It will be a hard habit to break, but I hope to update my usage in future videos.
** NOTES ON HIKING THE GRAND GULCH
This is a fragile environment so please be cautious when visiting. Do not touch any structure walls or rock art. Do not enter closed off areas and do not camp at archaeological sites. Leave all items where you find them and do your best to absolutely practice Leave No Trace. More information including the mandatory permit process can be found here:

That's a good living. I appreciate the soft shoe on the monument. Very divisive issue and there's a lot more to consider than just Obama-Bad/Trump-bad. Just appreciate Jamal's journey and if you visit the area, be as considerate and delicate as you see Jamal being. There were a lot of issues when the monument was first named. My opinion, people are probably the biggest threat to the area. Monuments (and social media) tend to draw them in.

Thanks! Yeah... even though a politically-fueled video would probably get 100x the views -- that's not a video I wanna make. I strongly believe in preservation of our natural spaces, but also believe in mixed use when/where it's not detrimental to a unique landscape. I understand that's a tough balance to strike and not everyone defines "preservation" the same way. Ultimately I think it's not so much about boundaries, but resource allocation including EDUCATION for those who visit. I strive to a do a little of that in my videos, but more is needed as our parks see record numbers in visitation each year. On occasion I catch some grief on my channel/site for bringing MORE attention to southern Utah -- but... IMHO the "secret" is out now and thus it's more about showing best practices for visiting these amazing places (and... the Zion Facebook group gets more views in a single day than my site/channel does in two years!) Thanks for watching and the comment! 👍

Jamal use sneaky SOB! Happy to hear that the videos will keep coming. This whole time I thought Bears Ears was going to be the end. I have a suggestion for 2022. You really should check out the San Rafael Swell. It is really near and dear to my heart. You could do all sorts of extended routes across it. Or you could do a giant circuit all the way around the entire formation going up and down various canyon systems. Any ways I look forward to seeing more. Thanks for sharing your passion.

That is true, but... I don't know if it would really "pay" off. I get a LOT of suggestions on how I could make more money off this channel (gear reviews, promos, licensed footage, swag, guided trips, etc), but in reality all of those take dedication and effort which would take me away from my style of videos. SO... TBD, maybe I'll find that magic formula at some point. Thanks for watching! 👍😀

Another great installment, Jamal! 👏🏻. I can't remember if I found the Turkey Pen ruins or not when I did my trip down GG...I found so many sites, but know I missed probably as many more; it's all part of the adventure, I think.
I love that you are continuing on down my FAVORITE side canyon in the whole Dark Canyon Wilderness area: Woodenshoe! I went down there in May of 2020 with my sketchbook and base-camped for a few days at the awesome spring-fed site that's about 2 miles up from the junction with Dark Cyn. I also did an out and back trip down there in 2018 where I went as far down as Young's. Those canyons, IMO, are just magical. I've also found pottery sherds and core reduction fragments (from the Archaic people) in random places throughout those canyons where there are no granaries or other structures to be found.
However, the one awful thing about that particular section of Dark Canyon that I didn't experience higher at Cherry Cyn or lower at Youngs, at least in May, were the....no-see-um gnats 😫. My face and ears were completely trashed from all the bites - I hope you faired better!
Will look forward to whatever future installments you have - your videos have brightened my days when they show up 😃

Thanks! Yeah... that's why I was a bit aloof when you asked about Woodenshoe in an earlier comment -- I didn't want to spoil the "extension" to this hike (I just loved the Bryce to Bears Ears theme!) No no-seeums for me (at least on this trip.) Thanks again for watching! 👍

Bravo! Looking forward to more bonus hiking, as well as the Q&A episode!
I recently finished David Roberts' "The Bears Ears," which tackles the history of the region, in its totality. He passed away just a month or so ago, sadly, but left us with a really well researched record of the place's very rich, and very complex story. I highly recommend it.
Re: the "making a living" part, your low-key, non-over the top commercialized approach is part of what makes your videos so good, so genuine, but that said, you could also set up a Paypal donation/tip jar link or something. I'm sure a bunch of us who watch your videos regularly would gladly contribute. It couldn't hurt, right?

Thanks! And thanks for the suggestion re: the BE book. I'll look into it and actually this reminds me I want to go back and look through my existing books (even guide books.) I always like doing this after visiting a spot for a first time to have new context. RE: donations -- I actually added a "Buy Me a Coffee" link on my website last year and have been really impressed with the generosity of others. Nothing on my site is behind a paywall, but the people who I help with maps/planning seem to enjoy giving a little back. It's not a big money-maker, but it helps offset the cost of the hosting fees for my site which is nice. I think I will plug it on an upcoming video as well. 👍

Thanks, Jean! I'm pretty happy with how this hike and video series turned out. The wind was definitely a production issue that I didn't realize was THAT bad while hiking. I tried to fix much of it in post -- but there's only so much I can do. I actually took a small extra mic on this hike, but it was too much of a hassle to use. BUT... • @Acrossutah

Oh yeah! I still have several spots I want to experience in Utah -- some popular and some no-name tucked-away spots. It's definitely getting tougher to do a "connect-the-dots" hike linking a bunch of them together though. Luckily I still enjoy re-visiting some of my favorite spots too. And really... it's such a cliché, but in a way an extended thru-hike is more about the journey than the individual spots -- and I don't think there's anyplace I'd rather have that experience than in southern Utah (though I have done some really enjoyable extended hikes in the Sierras, the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and the Grand Canyon.) No plans for 2022 yet... so we will see where I end up. Thanks for watching and the question. 👍

Jamal- just love your videos !! I live in Arizona and my daughter and I want to do some exploring in the area around bears ears. I have been thinking about going to Natural Bridges national Monument to do some hiking Did you do any exploring there? You didn’t show any video. I was just wondering what you think about the place? It has pretty good reviews online but I trust your reviews above everyone else! We like to go to off the beaten path places where the crowds are not. The national parks are just getting overrun with crowds anymore which is great because that means more people are getting outside in enjoying all nature and our beautiful country. We want to go down to the San Juan River area and especially visit Gooseneck State Park. Have you been there yet? Thanks for taking the time to show us your hikes !

I was running late so I had to scrap that plan (and I've done it before.) It's busy at times there, but not nearly as bad a Zion or Arches. Mule Canyon and Butler Wash are both nearby and good short hike as well if you're interested in seeing some archaeological sites. Cheers! 🌞

I have been to Natural Bridges, Mexican Hat and Gooseneck State Park, so am a little familiar with the area. Where would I park to hike for a day in Grand Gulch? I see when I googled it, that there is a dirt road that is near Natural Bridges that gets me closer to the Grand Gulch, but not a lot of info where to start for a day hike. Thanks and happy you are still hiking.
