Great video! I use cut bait almost exclusively and catch some good size fish. Key takeaway: as long as you get results, keep doing that. What works for some may not work for all. Personally I like a Santee Cooper rig with 3in float 3 to 4 oz egg sinker with a quarter bluegill/sunfish on a 4’ leader with a bait clicker. Hookup ratio is like 99% anchored.
Great content as always sir.... if you are a beginner to catfishing you need to listen to the information this man just gave it will save you a lot of headache
Thank you again another great video. I'm picking up tips along my way of fishing also you provided a lot of quality information again thank you so much.
Great, straight fish'n info. I just discovered your Chanel and intended on watching them all. I live up here on lake Erie and everyone fishes walleye/ bass, we have a great Chanel catfish population
Kurt I learned a lot about trolling for catfish from watching the old FLW Walleye Tournament Series back when it was on TV. Thank you for finding me and watching!!
I am from toledo Ohio and fish lake erie and maumee river...i found his channel and drove to north Carolina just to go on a guide trip with him.. Best catfish guide in my opinion
I have just done a fish for blue gill.. going to hit Norman next week when the boat trailer gets fixed… what’s your though on chumming bathe catfish area your going to fish
I found when fishing cut bait the head is the best part. Because when I use the body the turtles will eat away at my bait till its gone. If I use the head the turtles dont usually bother it and the catfish and Ive had a few big bass eat the head whole.
Yep,,, dieter puts out some very good information.my second time thru this video and I'm looking forward to putting to use here on lake Erie. The drifting will be the way to get'm on our large rocky flats.
Do you ever soak cut or live bait in anything before using it or is it fine all on it's own? Just like it's common to soak chicken breast in strawberry jello.
Great tips Dieter!! I agree about coming thru the bottom of the mouth and up thru the head. Another thing that does is help to secure that bait in a way that you may can save it after getting a fish hooked and into the boat!! Can't tell you how many times I have been able to use the same head to catch multiple cats with by simply hooking thru the bottom of the mouth and up thru the head!!
Interesting that you talk about the bait turning being a problem. Up here on the Red River we deal with strong current for Channel Cats. It literally just spins and spins in the current but doesn't have any effect on the bite. We do have to rig accordingly (with a swivel) to compensate for the line twists but the Cats bite all the same.
Dieter are these tips good for bank fishing as well? I already do them the way you should today. Just wondering if I should be doing it differently from the banks?
Love your videos . I just moved to lake Marion and been bank fishing but working on boat and was hoping you could give me some tips on how to fish the dam on the Marion lake side, Ant other tips would be greatly appreciated. From Charleston and the last time I fish in boat at Santee/lake Marion was in the late 60's, lot of changes. Thanks again
When you use bait casters from the bank do you engage them and keep the lines tight or do you leave the reel open with the bait clicker on and let them run then engage the reel to hook up?? I've been missing hook ups with the bait clicker so any advice would be amazing. I appreciate your time and videos. Amazing advice. Keep up the great work!!
New subscriber here great channel . But I do have a ? What is your opinion on frozen shad and skipjack that you can buy at your local bait shops for riiver fishing
Shad is the best cold water catfish bait. Water warms I go to skipjack, cut bluegill, creek chubs, carp, crappie if it is legal in your state. Follow your state regulations.
Great video! I have become a better angler and learned about catfish tackle better. I was wondering, I fish and area with an extremely rocky bottom and fast current. What weight/ rig do you recommend I use, and can striped bass/ gar see hi viz line? Thanks for the awesome content! These videos are very engaging, keep it up!
Hey so first I just want to say thank you for all your videos. You have helped me so much with getting me gear set up right & have been helping a few friends fix there’s as a result. When it comes to bait I try to have 3 types always. However this year I have gone fishing about 6-8 times so far & each time has been for a few hours. I use chicken bluegill & fat night crawlers but I have not caught anything. My area I have not herd or seen any large fish so I tend to only use Anything from a 4/0 to a small 4 hook with about a 1”x1” piece of bait. Didn’t know if you had any tips that might help me?
Thanks man! My brother and I are just getting into using cut bait for catfishing and we're gonna be going fishing next weekend. So I'm looking up a few tips and pointers to make sure I'm doing things right. We lost our dad at a young age so we never really had anybody to teach us how to do this stuff. Our dad was really big into fishing too so it sucks that he died when we were so young. I was 9 and my lol brother was 8. I'm 35 now and he's 34. We just recently discovered the Santee copper rig and I caught 2 decent sized catfish on it last time when went out. Wish us luck for this next time! Thanks again for the tips!
Thanks last night I tried to fish with a small blue gill . Just wanted to try something different than worms and liver. Never tried fishing with a fish. I thought about cutting it up but now I’m ready for sure to go out tonight and try to catch a monster

Thanks for doing what ya do. I'm ready to try some of your ideas in kansas waters.
Hooking the body piece at an angle will really help awesome tips
Awesome!
Using a skipjack head what's the best hook placement..thru the mouth or thru the top of the head🤔
Awesome tricks… some I never thought about but had always wondered how to best leave the hook exposed
Thank you again another great video. I'm picking up tips along my way of fishing also you provided a lot of quality information again thank you so much.
Great Tips Dieter! Thanks for sharing brother! 🐿
You're definitely a big help thanks for the videos
Good stuff, sir! Idk if you weigh in on this in another video, but do you think freezing cut bait before use makes it less effective?
Thanks for the tips Dieter!
I appreciate you taking the time to watch!!

Great tips! Thank you!
Great video Sir….
Hey man I love your videos can you tell me where you can find good cut bait
What size circle hooks would you recommend for catfish here in georgia, and Alabama fishing lakes, ponds and rivers
what hook size should i use ? what size are the hooks here circle i believe??
Deter. What fish finder are you using in your videos.
Dieter are these tips good for bank fishing as well? I already do them the way you should today. Just wondering if I should be doing it differently from the banks?
No, not really....this works for bank or boat....
@@DieterMelhorn thank you sir

There is no reason to use a bait clicker, ESPECIALLY with circle hooks, unless you want it as an alarm clock on a long night….😜
Thanks I appreciate that
I've been using poultry shears. I can cut bait faster and more safely. I only use the knife when I filet one.
New subscriber here great channel . But I do have a ? What is your opinion on frozen shad and skipjack that you can buy at your local bait shops for riiver fishing
Frozen skipjack is less mushy than shad. I’d rather have frozen skipjack than frozen shad…
Thank you my friend
Can you do a tutorial on how to hook shrimp
I have not fished shrimp in YEARS!! It works great though.....might have to carry some on a trip!!
@@DieterMelhorn I get a lot of flatheads on it but it has to be fresh shrimp not that frozen crap

I used to scale my pilchards before cutting them up, anyone notice any difference with cats?

Excellent tips! btw I'm loving my neck cam mount, I bought one after seeing Keith's at CatCon that guys always a trend setter 🤣
I'm digging it so far.....better audio too...even more like wearing a lav mic....

Even for shovelhead? I thought they prefer it live?
My suggestion is to use both. I've caught far more flatheads on cut bait, but that may be how I fish.....
Cut bait and livers!
You got a fat arch on your fish finder behind ya. Lol
Was catching 2 at a time by myself on my boat using hotdogs 3 times in one day check out my short videos
Have you ever fished with mullet
I actually have and I caught catfish on it. I brought some back from the beach and it works.....
Yea they like it on lake greenwood sc I get it at my local seafood market
