Good & gritty and real! Excellent story with good acting. A little on the dark & smoky side visually, but that matches the mood of the film. Thanks for another winner, BT!

Zachary Scott was greatly underrated, and what a performance by veteran Mary Boland. One of the best noirs ever.

JJ, I agree. I did not appreciate Zachary Scott in my earlier years. He is excellent here. And what a distinctive voice!
Those full-face closeup shots of him drinking (gulping shots) shows his ability. He knows logically that he should not, but his emotions propel him. That is displayed on his face.
That struggle is a classic (in all its meanings) fight: reason version passion.

This is about as "noir" as it is possible to get. Cheap budget, cheap sets, lots of location shots when possible, gritty surroundings, darkly lit, lots of booze and cigarettes, tough women, a protagonist with self made problems and a broken heart. Lots of good character actors here. The police captain had been in "The Killers" with Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner in her breakout role a few years before. The script has problems and the director doesn't do the most with the little he had, but I don't blame the actors. Well worth a watch.

Broken Trout : My favourite ZS film is Black Angel, but not just for his deliciously evil performance. (The scene with the manicurist-he’s so loathsome to her it’s like nails on a chalkboard.) Everyone from Cummings to Lorre was wonderful and the murky story delights from beginning to end.

He had good movie parts early on, before he became typecast on screen as yet another two-dimensional baddie. His acting career was ended by a brain-tumour that killed him at age 51 in 1965. He summed up his acting persona as that of "a heel with charm"

I've long been a Zachary Scott fan. In addition to "Mildred Pierce" who did a notable role in "The Southerner". I'd never heard of him before I saw that some years ago. I think he undersold his own ability and he's quite believable here. Too bad he didn't get more and better roles. That's Hollywood.

First thanks for the upload BT , I love old movies and especially Noir. But what the hell was going on here ? It was almost like episode 2 of a drama and we supposed to already know so much .Why was the son kidnapped , why did Eldredge live just over the hall to the wife and the door was always unlocked even after he was murdered? The fact he used to be a cop was signposted in the jail scene. Not great writing. The acting was OK and the alcoholic plot interesting but this was a rare old movie that I gave up on before the end , just through sheer exasperation of the weak plot.

  • @nedludd7622

The main advantage of this film noir over earlier ones is that the guys are no longer wearing those absurd hats. About the only believable character and actor here is the one who played the wife. A better closing would be "The End...At Last".
