I visited Ecuador in 2022 for a month during a research trip. Beautiful country and locals were all very nice, sad to see things like this happen. Just feels different when you have been to those places yourself and know people there that just want to live their lifes. I hope the situation does not escalate further, for everyone involved!

It's hard to combat corruption when the cartel has become so massive, because for many officials who want to "do good" all it takes is a serious threat on their family and their life, and suddenly they are in the hands of the cartel as well, or at least willing to look the other way. Not many people would be willing to risk the lives of their children or spouse, even if they wanted to do the right thing. You need more police resources to protect people and military too, to coordinate across all the countries were the cartel is active, and make decisive actions to come after them with overwhelming force.

I spent 6 months in Ecuador last year, and it is heaven for hummingbird lovers! Generally the people in rural areas were incredibly kind and welcoming. It saddens me to see what's happening there currently.
some were adults in their 30s at least, they paraded them outside afterwards. They also didn't even put up a fight despite having automatic weapons. Nothing has been reported about any demands either so the whole thing is likely staged to allow the government to continue their curfew and lockdown.

its not the same. A civil war is when your country is divided into 2 or more sides and they fight against each other, for different ideals.
