Marius Mules did NOT wear Segmentata. They wore the Lorica Hamata. Their Scutum was oval. The Segmentata was Imperial. The first evidence coming from Augustus' day.
Way before Imperial. After he won Consul in 108 BC. He redesigned the Legions by allowing the capite sensi to enlist and the state to arm them. He also standardized training and equipment.
As maranda piekarski said-term "Marius mules" was not applied just to actual soldiers serving under Marius in his time.It was a term used for that whole system when legionaries were transporting much of their gear on their own backs and of course this existed even long after Marius was already dead for centuries.
I make, well paint, models/miniatures of Romans. I obviously read what I can too, but dressing up like a Roman and actually trying out what it was like seems like a perfect dream to me!!!
I know this is old video, but can i point out that we are again moving towards conscription armies. Reason: those are better for wars. If you only fight small scale battles like Afghanistan, then professional armies are better. But for any real wars, conscription armies proved to be superior. They still are. We just are not having that much wars at the moment, luckily. And people dont really like conscription armies as much, so they are not used if not necessary. But when war comes, conscription comes too. I say it is best to prepare in peace time rather than start preparing when you are already at war, but that depends a lot on where you live and how much money your army has at it's disposable. USA for example has no need for conscription army as far as it is over spending as much as they are currently. Lots of smaller nations might benefit just having smaller professional army that is as good as any major nation's armies, and then just rely on alliances and reinforce alliance with strong units. Having small nation with lot of low quality soldiers would be useless. And it is never that simple.
+iDarius Certainly since clay tiles were found in Britain with VIIII as well as IX stamped in them. Seems they may have been interchangeable and possibly could have been to tell apart different vexillations from the same legion.
This may have been mentioned but as I recall Marius instituted the Eagle Standard as well.

Stabbing in reenactment is a bit dangerous, that's why he didn't stab, but slashed.
how old do you have to be to be a roman solder
Gladius was also good for hacking. It would fuck a dude up.

That guy don´t know how to fight with a gladius, i mean its a "Short STABBING sword" it was mainly for stabbing not slashing.
A couple of errors on this vid: Segmentata on Marius Mules? Testudo not used that much in battles? LoL! XD
