Still almost tear up every time I think back of his recital in Antwerp at the end of May, this sonata and the four scherzi of Chopin. Didn't think I'd ever see/hear/witness something like that...
@@jellekoorn4184 Definitely the best concert of the season for me as well, and probably one of the most memorable I'll ever witness. Pure magic!
His last concert in DeSingel in october 2021 was amazing too! Although this time his piano was unfortunately not well chosen for the dry accoustic I hear people say and I agree being able to compare with the previous concert in 2019. I also wonder why he started playing in Antwerp in stead of Brussels Bozar. The personel of Bozat got a bit arrogant like with Barenboim?
Thank you for uploading this. Gotta hear it!
Recorded on February 20 - 23 & June 1, 1982 in Munich - Akademie der Wissenschaften - Plenarsaal, along with the Scherzo in E flat minor, Op. 4
Muchas gracias.
What an ending!
Ty^^
This exactly means PERFECT.
Exquisite
I didn't know this Sonata. It's just wonderful! I heard the 1st and 2nd ones but this one hit me hard. If any of you know compositions like this from Brahms or other composers please enlighten me! Many many thanks! 💗
There is nothing like this Sonata - not anywhere else in Brahms, not anywhere else in Romantic music, not anywhere else at all. It is a miracle written by a 20 year old iconoclast brought up in a brothel in Hamburg. Yes - a miracle. After this his piano music becomes more sublimated.............it is also great music, but he never returned to this. The only other music which equals this in this part of his life is his Ballades, Op.10 (Michelangeli) - and then of course, a little later, but spiritually aligned, his Piano Concerto No.1......you have discovered something special here. (Try Radu Lupu's version of Sonata 3 - it's special).
Too feminine for Brahms? actually, the version of Lupu is not better than the one recorded by Zimerman, it's just a little bit different, but the artistic quality is really good both in Lupu's performance and in Zimerman's performance!
Thank you so much cmpearls 85 for this musical pearl !!! Congrats...
You can hear Brahms' tears...
This is wonderful... but I can hear why Zimerman wanted it withdrawn. The sound is very harsh. He did the same with the 1st concerto which was re-recorded years later with Rattle. Thank you for this.
TOO SAD THIS WAS HIS LAST SONATA.....WHAT OTHER GRAND MUSIC HE COULD HAVE WRITTEN IN THE SONATA FORM....
For a second I thought the picture showed the young Zimerman himself sitting behind the piano.
This recording has been published by dg?
Yes, I think this is from the old recording of Sonatas 1, 2 and 3, which Zimerman later withdrew, because he wasn't content with it anymore
I didn't know he didn't like that recording. (Wonder what "withdrew" means - he got DGG to not sell it anymore?) Especially interesting now that he is touring with this piece.
@@steinwey I know that, I just heard this piece he played this month.I think it's totally different from this recording.
@@user-zn2lo7kn5k I will be hearing him play it next month. Very curious, now!
5:36 ta ta ta ta remembers me of something maybe Beethoven... con you tell?
13:41 wow
Who else heard the echo of Beethoven's Sixth just after 39:00?
This photo of Brahms -- his coat is too big and his shoes are worn. Did he suffer with money problems?
ann marie Fuller, looks comfortable , able to be worn over things and warm though. I wonder if his feet go all the way to the end of those shoes?
Katchen's interpretation is far superior. No comparison at all. Sorry, Zimmerman worshippers. Lupu next.
I heard Mr. Zimerman in the early 80´s playing this sonata in Spain. His extreme powerful and direct renditions in those years were unique. Later he developed more declamative and affected manners.
