I love it! I remember this very well. Damn, we played so hard! We were so young, but we got to vibe - funny to see this now. I think it's safe to say neither one of us play like this any more.
This performance convinced me this guy was a jazz genius on the piano in small rooms. Saw this 2am on a Sunday night in 1989. Unfortunately he was commissioned to do the Harry met Sally OST the following year and he went into main stream Big Band revival popularity and played big amphitheatres from here out. I have his first 2 lps. Brilliant stuff.
Trash talkin' for no reason...everyone knows Harry's story...he's been around for a long time, and so has his father! No one can dispute this man's raw talent :)
I love the rhythmic variation at 2:55 The look you give Harry afterwards is the same look I give to my band mates: "Was that okay? Not too far outside the box?" lol. Magnificent playing!
there most definitely was a second clip on this episode of sunday night music with harry and ben... cheers lornezos, was looking for this clip for ages
A uniquely talented musician, I have listened to Harry and his band for 35 years now, I was honoured to meet him and watch the band at Prince Phillips 70th Birthday at Windsor Castle - UK, I played with DYJO during the day. I used to have a tape of a gig played on Radio live from the Albert Hall from the 80's , I miss that tape, anyone know where I can get a copy of the gig, all the classics, Bobby Darin's - More, at a quicker tempo....
I get tired of the Sinatra comparisons - Sinatra is an Icon no doubt but in my humble opinion Connick croons, writes songs & plays a ton of instruments (well) - so they are both pretty awesome but differently awesome..
Hi Lorenz. Great channel you got going :) One of my favorite Harry Connick Jr. songs is “Love me or leave me” from what I believe to be that same concert. It has somehow been removed from UA-cam. Do you by any chance know where I can find it? Best regard, Jacob
I don't know that one. They also do Ellington's The Clothed Woman on this show (Night Music 1989). The whole show, including a much better copy of this, is here ua-cam.com/video/--vms4ks-AI/v-deo.html&ab_channel=crosscurrentjazz
Forgive me, but this reminds me of Mike Myers doing his jazz bit in So I Married an Axe Murderer!!! Don't hate me, I am a HUGE Harry Connick Jr. fan!!!!!
@tsiggy The second clip was Duke Ellingtons Clothed Woman. I've got it on VHS somewhere but no way of converting it to digital right now. I'll check it out some day.
It's call Jazz Music. Study it. Problem nowadays is that kids and young adults don't have a clue what the hell real talent and musicanship is. They think Nicki Minaj, Rhianna, Jay Z and all those other clowns are playing real music, but it's all a bunch of cookie cutter, factory made, bull crap.. Jazz is real music and it takes REAL talent and education to play, it is one of the most difficult genres to play like a pro, and Harry knows how to do it.
He is doing crazy fraisings. That's just all. Musicians do that all the time, mostly when they play Infront of audiences that knows a little about music. Very few dare to perferom like he did to an American television audience due to the reason that they will think he plays bad.
The guy doesn’t know when to sing fast or slow and the piano and cello are so bad and don’t say I don’t know what jazz is because I have been in a jazz band for years
I love it! I remember this very well. Damn, we played so hard! We were so young, but we got to vibe - funny to see this now. I think it's safe to say neither one of us play like this any more.
Ben Wolfe fattest pocket
AWESOME !!!
Ben - this performance riveted me in 1989 and I still remember it. A brilliant interpretation.
One of my favorite bass players. Great. Band in those days.
Was the key change intentional?
I was there for 20, I was there for 25, totally loved Songs I Heard, but I have never before caught this performance. Thanks for posting!
one of the finest vocalist/musician America ever produced....timeless Harry Connick Jr.

Brilliant stuff.
Harry Connick sings this so great! Fantastic collaboration.
Trash talkin' for no reason...everyone knows Harry's story...he's been around for a long time, and so has his father! No one can dispute this man's raw talent :)
That bassist KILLS IT! He's so good.
Love how he plays around with the time signatures and the syncopation, brilliant!
All these years I've never heard him do this song. Awesome!!!
genius and master of beautiful music, this song still stands as my favorite
Awesome Ben! Both of you. It´s a fine documentation of the era, and pretty much the reason i got in to playing jazz. Thank´s man! :)
He is a GREAT singer. Always perfectly on pitch. You can tell he is REALLY passionate about his tunes, as well he should be!
This is pure gold.
ur lame
THIS IS SO COOL!
AMAZING PLAYING FROM EVERYONE & HARRY IS JUST PURE MAGIC
WELL DONE
This is amazing. It might sound messy but it is masterful. Jazz is very difficult to play.
+Daniel Marra I actually enjoyed his part on the piano!! :)
+Mr. Razzie Binxp
Harry Connick JR is a master musician
Play in all keys all the time that’s jazz
No matter how you sing it or how outlaw the piano and double base sound, it is still fantastic, that is jazz, freedom of expressions. Love it!
He was 22 years old here. Dang
This is so incredibly brilliant..
I love the rhythmic variation at 2:55
The look you give Harry afterwards is the same look I give to my band mates:
"Was that okay? Not too far outside the box?" lol. Magnificent playing!
This just makes me happy to be alive. Love this.
That's beautiful, get your song on, Harry!
there most definitely was a second clip on this episode of sunday night music with harry and ben... cheers lornezos, was looking for this clip for ages
very good, love the improvisation

Ben sounds awesome! and Harry's singing is phrased so much like Louis Armstrong at time and Sinatra. Great arrangement too. Love it.
Miss the diner in downtown SF...I love it!!!! Darlin' let me take me to you to a beautiful & creative world....
Love this song!
A rare gift that a man with true musical talent (yes I know this is a Sinatra song) also has the most pleasant singing voice ever.
Excellent version of this tune!
He is straight up imitating Thelonius Monk on piano...messy genius
Outstanding !!!
its great Ben.cheers
Awesome 👏 and awesome 👏
@Cre8Thought41
No one is SInatra, but Connick is as cool as Sinatra ever was, which in my book is very cool.
Harry is waaaaaaaaay cooler. Sinatra could not play piano as well, even if his life would depend on it.
You're great at that bass man... This version is thrilling... Congrats!
EXCELENTÍSIMO, ADORO ESTA VERSIÓN. SON DINAMITA!
this guy is so full of it ,,, i mean music
I get tired of the Sinatra comparisons - Sinatra is an Icon no doubt but in my humble opinion Connick croons, writes songs & plays a ton of instruments (well) - so they are both pretty awesome but differently awesome..
LOL his hands and body movement are direct Monk so cool!
White boy got so much SOUL!!!
👍🏻
Love this!!!!!
I remember seeing this for the first time over 20 years ago and I've bought almost every HC Jr. album since. Great find!
Great, perfect!!!
Hi Lorenz.
Great channel you got going :)
One of my favorite Harry Connick Jr. songs is “Love me or leave me” from what I believe to be that same concert. It has somehow been removed from UA-cam. Do you by any chance know where I can find it?

1:52 just realized that piano riff is sampled in Us Vs. Them by the $uicideBoy$
Fantastic.... :-)
21 people don't know what JAZZ is, and think One Direction is real music.
Jam Session Technically One Direction is real music. It's all just perspective; music is music.
I like this song
Ben WOLFE is a master
So good.
Happy Birthday Harry:)
Amazing!!
Are y'all ready to swing out?
The way Harry doing the solo remembered me of Thelonious Monk style
How in god's name did Ben keep up with the teasing of HC?
''melodious''monk on piano:)
The crooners ♥️
You both were awesome! Are you still performing?
Forgive me, but this reminds me of Mike Myers doing his jazz bit in So I Married an Axe Murderer!!! Don't hate me, I am a HUGE Harry Connick Jr. fan!!!!!
@stampenrangers would be great to see-hear that one too stampenrangers!
The man!
harry and ben kicking ass...
oh, the shoulder pads... Dena Ricer
Oh dear! This is an oldie, but a goodie. Lol
👏🏾👏🏾
Jazz Rules !
some of his songs rules along with michael buble singing with janet monheit
damn ben wolfe has chops!!
Great clip! Got any others from Harry in 1989?
Yes it is!!!
jazz is amazin
@tsiggy The second clip was Duke Ellingtons Clothed Woman. I've got it on VHS somewhere but no way of converting it to digital right now. I'll check it out some day.
I thought he was cheesy on his recent works, but here he hits.
Is that Wolfman from 'That Thing You Do' on bass?
wow...
he can play as flawless as the best of them...he was paying respect to Monk, Thelonious Monk...yo?
what's the password?
😀
Holy mackerel, Monk jr.!
@joefinklemusic - Sorry this is all I've got.
Check out Smokey Robinson's version of this song
Mario Lopez plays bass?
jazz ruler
Thae fact that you think it is a cello means that i probably would'nt trust your thoughts that it it is out of tune which it isnt!!!!!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Connick,_Jr.
❤😊❤ s
Great performance. But I think HCJ should leave the Monk to Monk! It's sort of a bit heavy to pull off without drums or a third instrument.
I loved it
Chopin
his piano isn't exactly flawless, but i can dig it
3:12
Caroline brésilien
@nezkeys79
Bassist is wonderful, pianist is OK, vocalist is really bad 🤣
I don't think Sinatra was that cool. Great voice, one of the best, but cool? Harry is much more in tune with people and that's why he is so cool.
I'm going against the tide. I think that's one gigantic mess.
What in the world is this? Dont dig it at all
It's call Jazz Music. Study it. Problem nowadays is that kids and young adults don't have a clue what the hell real talent and musicanship is. Jazz is real music and it takes REAL talent and education to play, it is one of the most difficult genres to play like a pro, and Harry knows how to do it.
Jam Nail Session I know what jazz is.. but this is a failed attempt at it.
cj7ification you're so ignorant. I think you'd do better leaving it to the professionals..
Agree again! Like the first comment, it sounds messy but it is so hard to play
This is terrible lol
that was really terrible..., seriously
agreed
Uh, yeah right. And you could improvise to that bass? Haha
He is doing crazy fraisings. That's just all. Musicians do that all the time, mostly when they play Infront of audiences that knows a little about music. Very few dare to perferom like he did to an American television audience due to the reason that they will think he plays bad.
He's got a great voice but Frank Sinatra he ain't.
That cello sounds out of tune.
+Adam Bridges ummm that's not a cello sir. Time to review your musical instruments ;)
Oh. Sorry. The double bass. Regardless, it still sounds out of tune.
+Adam Bridges clean your ears my bru
+Adam Bridges Sounds fine to me! Double basses have a 'bendy' tend to their sound because they are fretless
it's a bass btw.
The guy doesn’t know when to sing fast or slow and the piano and cello are so bad and don’t say I don’t know what jazz is because I have been in a jazz band for years
It's not a feaking cello and you try singing and playing that. Not in a million years pal. Me too a musician
Colin ...are any of your albums available for purchase, for comparison purposes ?
He is consciously doing these crazy fraisings. Don't think he doesn't know what he is doing
Outstanding !!!
