That was an all-time-great Irish defense. Manti T'eo, for all his off-the-field publicity afterwards, was the heart and soul of that unit. It was an honor watching him play that season.
Yes, this goal-line stand holds up still as huge - as does the famous one Dick Butkus was part of at Illinois, which is legendary. Butkus and his college team stopped four straight runs inside the five. Some called it the greatest goal line stand they ever saw.
People are still arguing about this call? The official call was: forward progress had stopped, whistle blew. The replay was to see if any part of the ball had crossed BEFORE the whistle blew. When the whistle blew, and where the ball was when it did was inconclusive, therefore game over. I saw a sideline cam, think it was Stanford Media that had good audio, you can see a good shot of the ref running over and blowing the whistle before Taylor starts to spin. I would imagine they wouldn't post that in too many places though...
That’s the problem though, forward progress is to benefit the offense, so the defender doesn’t just pick the runner up and carry him back. On a 4th down play, the referee should never be calling the play dead for forward progress unless it’s on of those pile ups where the player can’t possibly move forward. Here, the referee never gave the RB a chance to spin and lunge. Poor officiating, in my opinion, because I don’t see any conclusive proof that a body part was down before the ball crossed the goal line. If forward progress wasn’t called, it probably would have been a TD after the call standing on the replay.
What people do not understand is that this play would not have ended the game even if it was called a touchdown. Notre Dame had gotten the ball first in overtime and Tommy Rees had thrown a touchdown pass to TJ Jones. Pending the extra point, the game would have just gone into another overtime.
It is in my opinion that this was a bad call, however, David Shaw always says that there is no such thing as a bad call. In that case, I congratulate Notre Dame on a well played game and a deserved undefeated regular season. I look forward to our next game. I look forward to it very much.
Has anyone mentioned the fact that his forward momentum was already stopped anyway? I'm definitely not an ND fan, but he was stopped well before he spun and reached to the goal line.
I love that people are still crying about this. Stanford had MULTIPLE chances to move the ball up the field a whole 6 inches and couldn't get it done. End of story
espn did a frame by frame and it showed that his elbow hit before the ball crossed. and its not kellys fault he got up there he coaches the team not the video phatagraphers
How about that goal line stand against USC on the 1 yard line last night. What did they have 6 or 7 tries to get in from the 1? and the Irish didn't give an inch.
The call stands? It should have been confirmed. His elbow was down before the ball crosses the line. In my opinion, the 3rd down play was closer than the 4th down play.
im not a stanford or notre dame fan but i still believe the refs blew the whistle way yo early even if his legs where stopped he was not top of a guy still moving and 1 second away from scoring t=if the refs didnt blow the whistle still a great game!
Nope. You can see around the 4:30 mark that his elbow hits the ground only AFTER he crossed the goalline. Before it's close to the ground, but it's not touching the ground.
I'm not referring to Lizzy Seeberg in the rape case. Seeberg's death caused a different girl to not file a rape report with the police. Again, it was a ND football player who violated the new girl. Seeberg DID tell the police. She reported it. They didn't bother to pursue it further until several days after she died. The Declan Sullivan case was criminal negligence. Call it an accident if you must, but when winds are that fast, there's no reason for his superiors to allow him up there.
In spite of dear ole Manti T'eo's matter, Kelly's blathering about going to the NFL, and the subsequent thrashing by 'Bama, it was, all in all, a most entertaining season. GO IRISH!
wrong..and regardless, the linesman was already running down to spot the ball before he did his twist..so he obviously felt forward progress was stopped...theres a reason they are a ref and watching on the field, while you are watching on your couch..
+Harvey Specter yeah, he was the announcer for ND games on NBC. He was replaced with Doug Flutie bc he was being "too technical" with his football terminology and explanations and refused to dumb it down.
GUknights75 Which we all know is bullshit cause people were yelling at NBC to get rid of Mike for years cause of his fanboyness >_> He's gone at least, right?
This is proof positive if Golson didn't fumble the ball in his own end zone, Stanford would of lost in regulation, being they didn't score an offensive TD the entire game. What's your point in the "what if's"?
Manti T'eo celebrated too soon. He could have stuffed the guy inside instead of celebrating as the ball crossed the line. But he done good on the 3rd down stop.
i wouldve liked to see ohio state in the championship. lets be honest though, alabama wouldve killed anybody last year. when nick saban has 2 months to prep for a team, he doesnt lose.
I would've loved to see Stanford vs Alabama, both discipline teams, Alabama's Defense vs Stanford's O-Line would be the match up of the century. Alabama would win but it would've been the best match up for the 2013 championship game.
No, Oregon with Mariota vs Alabama would be the match up of the century, sadly Ohio State fucked up our only chance of seeing them two play each other.
Yes I am a Notre Dame fan but i admit right and wrong no matter what. As a FAN OF FOOTBALL that "Stands as Called" statement was correct. I understand we have Irish haters on here but for you to say "Stanford should have won" or "They got screwed" then obviously your just pissed off because we won. In case you didnt pay close enough attention HIS ELBOW WAS DOWN BEFORE THE FUCKIN BALL CROSSED. So...If it wasnt completely clear to the officials then indesputable evidence was the correct call.
This was the third game Notre Dame cheated to win that year. Pitt, Stanford, and someone else I can't remember. Living in denial is an easy way to get to hell.
And that STILL doesn't address the threatening text message. "You don't want to mess with ND football" or something like that. I guess that's okay, too. As is failing to interview Shembo until after she died.
lol just a bit of free advice..Rome once thought it was invincible, looked what happened to them..dont be arrogant, enjoy the success while its there..
How is that not a touchdown on second-and-goal? Oh, well. Stanford is 3-1 vs. Notre Dame since then (and has won six of the last eight in the series overall).
Mark DeVaughn Good thing history didn't start in 2012; your team is a blip on the map & back to bottom dwellers when David Shaw finally takes an NFL job. I'm not saying BK is great, but seriously, you're in an "argument" that can't be won & like I said...still no title/playoff appearance (the grass not green team does)....
Taunting over "no playoff, title game appearances" implies a history not much older than 2012. There's no doubting ND's huge impact on game, but... Let's talk since 1993: How many 10-win seasons/Top 10 finishes for ND? Stanford 76-18 (.808) since 2010. Sounds just like Notre Dame...in the '70s. I'm only arguing the symbolism in this game. Irish won the battle, but have lost the war -- and it's not even close -- since.
again, this could all have been prevented if Kelly practiced indoors. he was warned numerous of times that the wind speed would exceed 50 mph and he choose to practice outdoors. As someone who is the head coach and older than everyone else on the field, he should have been responsible for the well being of his players, staff, and volunteers FIRST. The university had nothing to do with this, Brain Kelley is the man who makes the final decisions, he is the man responsible. Stop deluding yourself.
but he can decide whether to practice indoors or outdoors. he made his choice, and the result is the death of a student. as the head coach of the Notre Dame Football Team I would expect that person be more responsible and have a head, which Coach Kelly doesn't don't apparently...
You know for sure they "cheated" in three games, can't remember one of the teams they "cheated" against, but you're damn sure they cheated in three games. You're not even a good troll.
Well i looked @the downs a few times now 3rd &4th down Stanford clearly got stopped but honestly that 2nd down looked like a TD to me ya can't see it from the camera behind the QB but you can see it from the side view his elbow actually landed on the endzone line the ball was already across looks like they got robbed but Stanford is playing alot better football now than they was then hope they win there bowl game well see yall in Miami ROLL TIDE ROLL!!! lol
lol well i didnt do that..in fact i kinda cringed when i heard about it..so, i see your point..however, you could just take the high road instead of stooping to their level..just saying..
the NCAA disagreed...case closed...also FYI, the same officiating crew for this game officiated the BCS title game..lol they screwed ND more than they helped them, in both games...little details man
The Washington Post is a respectable newspaper. The article was written by ND alum Melinda Henneberger- "Why I won't be cheering for old Notre Dame." Oh, and this was published BEFORE the Te'o lies were revealed. If you can read the "big words" in the article without many pictures, you can see all the research that was done and the sources that were consulted. See the two DISTINCT (non)cases of rape and sexual assault? When I'm right, I'm right. Rapists are allowed to play for ND, charges or no
pretty pathetic that fans consider a game decided by a questionable call an epic game. Most teams 'Epic' wins don't have a * and ? marks beside them. They are definitive wins. Not poor refereeing.
Not saying it was a bad call, but it definitely could have gone the other way. Somebody coming out later saying, "Oh I would have made the same call, we believe they got it right." is a very easy thing to do. Doesn't mean it was the right call. Forward progression is all up to the ref, and the whistle obviously hadn't been blown so that isn't the case.
He did it for his girlfriend
@@danielallen9253 Well, as a South Bend native and Irish fan....we thank her
1) Forward progress was stopped 2) His left elbow hit the ground before he even got the ball to the goal line.
This was my first ever trip to Notre Dame Stadium, I will never forget it!
Love that Stanford was man enough to run it up the gut 3 plays in a row. Awesome football. Go Irish!
My five-month-old daughter was sleeping soundly until that stop on fourth down.
His elbow hit the ground before the ball reached the goal line.
Forward Progress call could have gone either way. His elbow is definitely down before the ball cross the goal line, regardless.
This was one of the BEST MOMENTS EVER in football!!! :D
What a great football game! The goal line stand at theend was indeed epic!
What a great team and season. Shame we didn't win it all. GOOOO IRISH BEAT EVERYONE.
He obviously didn't get across and they made the right call
People are still arguing about this call? The official call was: forward progress had stopped, whistle blew. The replay was to see if any part of the ball had crossed BEFORE the whistle blew. Matt Romero Looks like he made a touchdown on 2nd down.
It's ok. Stanford made a more epic finish by beating the Irish on a game winning drive. It overshadows this burden of a play.
It's okay, Notre Dame has more championships than Stanford.
That’s the problem though, forward progress is to benefit the offense, so the defender doesn’t just pick the runner up and carry him back. On a 4th down play, the referee should never be calling the play dead for forward progress unless it’s on of those pile ups where the player can’t possibly move forward.

Striker 333 yah, like a long time ago, relevance now, Stanford is a better football program then Notre Dame
Exactly...not sure why people are referring to the elbow...he was spinning backwards and then tried to twist and turn his way to a TD
Like watching the Zapruder film.
Back and to the left.
I still remember how stressful i was watching this on tv lol amazing game, it felt like a scene from a movie no lie
What people do not understand is that this play would not have ended the game even if it was called a touchdown. Notre Dame had gotten the ball first in overtime and Tommy Rees had thrown a touchdown pass to TJ Jones. Pending the extra point, the game would have just gone into another overtime.

Check the forearm/elbow before he reaches the goal line. Definitely down.
Damn i remember being in like 5th or 6th grade watching this live with my older brother
Has anyone mentioned the fact that his forward momentum was already stopped anyway? I'm definitely not an ND fan, but he was stopped well before he spun and reached to the goal line.
Greatest college defense ever!!!!! :)
95 Nebraska was the best ever
I love that people are still crying about this. Stanford had MULTIPLE chances to move the ball up the field a whole 6 inches and couldn't get it done. End of story
espn did a frame by frame and it showed that his elbow hit before the ball crossed. and its not kellys fault he got up there he coaches the team not the video phatagraphers
What's the song the band plays before 4th down play
How about that goal line stand against USC on the 1 yard line last night. What did they have 6 or 7 tries to get in from the 1? and the Irish didn't give an inch.
If number 6 wasn't celebrating he could have cleared things up a bit..Hello dude be apart of the play!
The call stands? It should have been confirmed. His elbow was down before the ball crosses the line. In my opinion, the 3rd down play was closer than the 4th down play.
Looks to me like ND is going to be enjoying the BCS title game.
im not a stanford or notre dame fan but i still believe the refs blew the whistle way yo early even if his legs where stopped he was not top of a guy still moving and 1 second away from scoring t=if the refs didnt blow the whistle still a great game!
But none taken away Taylor...hell of a running back. I would love to see Green Bay draft him. Hell be tough in the pros.
Yup. It was a goal line STANDford
elbow down before he crosses just be a frame right call even though it was so close.
My favorite last minute play. GO IRISH!!!!!

The Declan Sullivan case was criminal negligence. Call it an accident if you must, but when winds are that fast, there's no reason for his superiors to allow him up there.
So...You're saying ND fans are living in denial, while you are denying ND won those games...I'll take "Most Ironic Statement Ever" for 1000 Alex.
In spite of dear ole Manti T'eo's matter, Kelly's blathering about going to the NFL, and the subsequent thrashing by 'Bama, it was, all in all, a most entertaining season. GO IRISH!
We got lucky about 4x this year on our way to Bama.
watching this after getting our ass kicked by texas
I'll say I'm glad Tom Hammond is gone, but dammit that was one of his best calls.
Just give me your source. I don't have any problems with it if you give me your source. I know you've read that somewhere.
Pause at 3:43 Ball crosses the goal line and he still NOT DOWN. Should have been a touchdown. CLEAR AS DAY.
naved0589 I think he got it on 2nd down
naved0589 At a 45 degree angle to the goal line you can spot the ball breaking the plain?Wouldn't want to ride the rocket you built.
+flyon awall the replay clearly shows his knee was down well before he crossed the plain
+Alex Godriguez But the whistle was blown before that happened.
yeah and pause at 4:30 and try telling me his elbow isn't down before the reach.
his elbow was down prior to him reaching for the goal line..why is this a controversy?
wrong..and regardless, the linesman was already running down to spot the ball before he did his twist..so he obviously felt forward progress was stopped...theres a reason they are a ref and watching on the field, while you are watching on your couch..
Is that Mike Mayock on commentary?
+Harvey Specter yeah, he was the announcer for ND games on NBC. He was replaced with Doug Flutie bc he was being "too technical" with his football terminology and explanations and refused to dumb it down.
+GUknights75 More like he was completely bias with his Big Ten teams. Aka being a fucking fanboy to the Big Ten.
not arguing that, but the reason I gave was the official reason NBC gave
GUknights75 Which we all know is bullshit cause people were yelling at NBC to get rid of Mike for years cause of his fanboyness >_>
He's gone at least, right?
This is proof positive that if Hogan had been QB during this game, it would've been a different ending!
This is proof positive if Golson didn't fumble the ball in his own end zone, Stanford would of lost in regulation, being they didn't score an offensive TD the entire game.
What's your point in the "what if's"?
Oh you mean the schedule that placed 6th in the country?
Manti T'eo celebrated too soon. He could have stuffed the guy inside instead of celebrating as the ball crossed the line. But he done good on the 3rd down stop.
i wouldve liked to see ohio state in the championship. lets be honest though, alabama wouldve killed anybody last year. when nick saban has 2 months to prep for a team, he doesnt lose.
As I told the other guy, the head of NCAA officials said it was the correct call, sorry you can't deal with that.
Im sorry, I didn't know you were an official for the NCAA. My apologies
The title is called Epic Goalline Stand...not game
I would've loved to see Stanford vs Alabama, both discipline teams, Alabama's Defense vs Stanford's O-Line would be the match up of the century. Alabama would win but it would've been the best match up for the 2013 championship game.
No, Oregon with Mariota vs Alabama would be the match up of the century, sadly Ohio State fucked up our only chance of seeing them two play each other.
I wish Notre Dame Stadium was still natural grass
USC would have done well to remember this stand before calling 4 run plays in a row
Stanford didn't score an offensive touchdown the entire game. Great job by the Irish!
you seem to like repeating yourself a lot. When someone repeats something long enough to them self eventually it will become true.
lol just a bit of free advice..Rome once thought it was invincible, looked what happened to them..dont be arrogant, enjoy the success while its there..
How is that not a touchdown on second-and-goal?
Oh, well. Stanford is 3-1 vs. Notre Dame since then (and has won six of the last eight in the series overall).
Mark DeVaughn and no playoff, title/title game appearances to show for.
Let's compare Stanford (49-13 since this game) and Notre Dame (36-21): The jerseys are greener in South Bend. The grass is not.
Mark DeVaughn Good thing history didn't start in 2012; your team is a blip on the map & back to bottom dwellers when David Shaw finally takes an NFL job. If history doesn't start in 2012, then it doesn't start in 1993 either.
If they made the right call, ND would be, since they DID make the right call.
Epic
yes, it is clear.

Worst call of 2012 season...I hated that game...loved the one tonight tho :-)
that was a touchdown
Yo I was at this game me and my dad were freezing out butts off but I got to witness the biggest 4 downs of my life
Yeah. Shittsburgh was a real contender. Even Youngstown State could beat them without paying off the officials.
but he can decide whether to practice indoors or outdoors. he made his choice, and the result is the death of a student. as the head coach of the Notre Dame Football Team I would expect that person be more responsible and have a head, which Coach Kelly doesn't don't apparently...
lol its all good bro..i eat trolls for breakfast. Its just so much fun messin with them right back..but i appreciate the comment...GO IRISH!
You know for sure they "cheated" in three games, can't remember one of the teams they "cheated" against, but you're damn sure they cheated in three games.
You're not even a good troll.
Hands to the face on 3rd down(Teo)
So if ND is the biggest fluke in CFB, what does that make your MSU Spartans? 20-3!!
Well i looked @the downs a few times now 3rd &4th down Stanford clearly got stopped but honestly that 2nd down looked like a TD to me ya can't see it from the camera behind the QB but you can see it from the side view his elbow actually landed on the endzone line the ball was already across looks like they got robbed but Stanford is playing alot better football now than they was then hope they win there bowl game well see yall in Miami ROLL TIDE ROLL!!! lol

The head of the NCAA officials said it was the right call, there is no * or ? by this win aside from ND haters.
had Cierre bounced outside before OT, the game would have been over, ND wins.
His elbow touched the ground and he dropped it, he was down.
incorrect, watch it again
P.S enjoy the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl...
no it wasnt. but i mean NOTREDAMEFANATIC2012 prob isnt biased. ur either a 50 year old man or a 12 ur old little boy.. which one?
the NCAA disagreed...case closed...also FYI, the same officiating crew for this game officiated the BCS title game..lol they screwed ND more than they helped them, in both games...little details man
Sorry Stanford. It isn't a touchdown unless you cross the line. GO ND!

HORRIBLE CALL Unquestionably a TD. Standford got screwed big time!!
Honestly what are you trying to get out of all this..
That's college football schedules for you, haha.
NDND
Too bad Shaw went Schembechler. as it is said in the Italian Job..."No imagination"
And thats why your friends dad is a High School fer
lmao really? his knee was clearly down before he crossed the plane
Now if they made the right call, ND wouldn't be in the NC game. ND is the biggest fluke in college football.
pretty pathetic that fans consider a game decided by a questionable call an epic game. Most teams 'Epic' wins don't have a * and ? marks beside them. They are definitive wins. Not poor refereeing.
Touchdown
Ref
lol news flash..they still would have had to score an extra point, and that would have only TIED the game...lol its all in the details man
Not saying it was a bad call, but it definitely could have gone the other way. Somebody coming out later saying, "Oh I would have made the same call, we believe they got it right." is a very easy thing to do. Doesn't mean it was the right call.
Forward progression is all up to the ref, and the whistle obviously hadn't been blown so that isn't the case.
3 touchdowns
Stanford shoulda won... The ball was across
