[5:10] Edited out the half hour it took you to find somewhere to park. I haven't been to Scarborough since 2005. It does not look any different. When I was a kid we would go there on day trips a few times a year, and we even stayed there for a week on a couple of occasions. I can confirm that the north bay had something of a revival because we stayed there for a week around 1980. We kids hated it because my parents did not want to spend much time on the north side, and my dad refused to use the car, so we would have to walk to the south side and back almost every day. What was particularly annoying was that the north side had a massive water park type thing, something that we had never seen before, and we just wanted to go there rather than walk 2 miles to sit on a crowded beach. We went there one day and it was great, although my dad disagreed. One year we did stay on the south side and there was a cliff lift that we used a few times to get to the hotel, but I cannot remember which one it was - probably the one by the spa. My dad refused to go on it, so we only used it when he wasn't with us. When we did not use the lift I believe there was what seemed like an unnecessarily long path that snaked down the cliff in some gardens. There may have been more direct stairs, but my mother dislikes stairs. Now that I think about it, between my dad and my mum with their long list of often conflicting preferences, it's amazing that I remember going to Scarborough as being fun.
@@AdventureMe Well you have better luck/timing than me. I usually end up driving around aimlessly and then parking somewhere away from the sea front, like York.
I'm 62 and Scarborough holds a special place in my heart. We stayed at Colley's Cosy Camp in the north bay many times in the 60's and 70's, So many happy times spent there. Thanks for the great video
North Bay would still be popular if they'd kept Kinderland, Watersplash / Atlantis, Mr Marvels and the chair lifts and the Corner entertainment complex.
I agree it's shameful that Kinderland and Watersplash closed. From how I see it the council agreed to the apartment developments on the Corner Cafe site with conditions that a new domed water park would be built. We still have the eyesore where Watersplash was!
they have only closed it because it ment extra money to turn our beutiiful town into "luxury apartments" that will be too expensive to live in anyway in a few years this town is slowly dying
@@moodyguymick I remember before any of those places were created. Like Alpamare they were all short term ventures, never quite special enough to become long term & lasting, just like the indoor pool.

In my opinion one of the biggest downfalls of the North Bay was closing the North Bay Lido. A great place that just needed annual upkeep. Where are all the traditional outdoor Lidos today...? I love this video by the way.
Scarborough Council have always had a cavalier attitude to their visitor attractions. The demolition of the Opera House Theatre, the Futurist Theatre, etc etc

Darren on his jollies again!!! Thanks Darren for the history lesson on old Scarborough cliff lifts. As kids it was usually Bridlington, occasionally Filey or Whitby for holidays. Day trips to Scarborough but usually to South Bay. I never knew about the pier and only the Clift lift by the spa. On day trips it was too long a walk to Peasholm park and the model ships battles on the lake. As a Batley born kid it was equidistant to the Yorks or Lancs coasts but before my folks could buy a car (post war austerity there were not many s/h, or new cara available!) it was usually the Yorks coast via coaches (the coaches of the 50/60 were something to behold 😀) After we got a car then Lytham St Anne's was my folks preferred Lancs destination. @@AdventureMe Spot on Darren, the harbour and fish quays were like a magnet to a curios kid. Im 81 and live abroad quite a lot now, but my Mother took me to Scarborough every summer and Blackpool for the lights. We lived in Norfolk. I spent as much time as I could on the lifts and made every excuse possible to use them. I loved the two swimming pools, one, the sea water was my favourite. Peasholme park at least once a week to watch the fighting of the battle ships. I was such a regular was allowed to sail on one once. From age 4 to 13, then planes and abroad came into my left, although I then took my children to both venues when they grew up. Many years later I assisted in doing a total inventory of the Grand Hotel, with three other people. It took us over two weeks, there was no heat anywhere in the building and I thought I was going to freeze to death. I loved the place, especially when my Mother referred to the 6p bay and the 2 shilling bay!!!!
Another fascinating video, of to Scarborough next month, we will make point of visiting North Bay. Again never knew Scarborough had a pier or Tower! Many thanks once again, I love this kind of information.

Interesting vlog. It's a pity the council dismantled the North Bay Tram. I can't believe it didn't make money. You said that you had made more vlogs while you were in Scarborough. I hope one is about how Scalby Mills used to look like. It would be interesting, I don't think I have seen anyone make a vlog about Scalby yet. I know there used to be a fun fair there, a pub and a cafe. The pub that is there now, The Old Scalby Mills, used to be a gift shop.
Used top be a island called monkey island in the late 50's, the north bay around Scalby mills was developed in 62 I think. Used to be a kids paddling pool as well as slide, amusements, shops, toilets, pub and a cafe. I lives in town since 60s and came from here also have a lot of old photos I collect and restore
@@Chris-pv2ht. I think monkey island is a bit before my time. Can you remember the name of the pub please? I have been in it but I can't remember the brewery either. Scalby was a great place for the kids, with the miniature railway and chair lifts.

Just come back from a few days in Scarborough. Went on the Victorian Venicular which was great. South Bay is very “Blackpool” like and North Bay a lot quieter but both have great beaches and you can get a open top bus between one and the other I also went to see the remains of the old Ski Lift by the open air theatre (which was in one of your previous videos) as well as Peasholme Park, the miniature railway and the water slide. All my trip was made so much better because of your videos, so many thanks and I would definitely recommend Scarborough for a Staycation
A very interesting and informative video of the five Victorian/Edwardian Funicular Railways of Scarborough. I was born in Scarborough in 1952, raised in town, on the North Side; I have been in business all my life, and am now retired in the lovely village of Burniston. My childhood was spent in the North Bay, down the Glen, to the magical boating ponds; you had to be there early with your "Star" solid wooden yacht under your arm. Then it was on to Peasholm Park and the North Bay; along to Scalby Mills where, before the present seawall was built in 1960, Scalby Beck ran across the sands with, "Monkey Island" in the middle. As kids we could run up and down is steep faces! Then, back to the sands; someone would find an old fishbox washed up; providing an ideal wicket and cricket bat, we always had an old bald tennis ball with us; plenty of the blokes on the sands would eagerly join in. WE never had a penny between us...happy days!!
Good to see all the lifts covered, I took my first holiday in Scarborough about 1993 and we rode on all of the then extant lifts sad to see so much gone especially at the North Bay. Not been back since 2000.
I only live in Filey so know the area well. The North Bay Cliff railway still exists. It is in store at Launceston in Cornwall. The plan is to link the town to the steam railway with it.
Fantastic! I'm watching from Melbourne and was born in Scarborough and came here as a kid with my mum and dad. Brought back some lovely memories, thank you :)
Love this place ! First went thirty years ago, I'm now 75 avoided it because it's on the east coast and living in notts the nearest seaside place is skegness which I don't like .I thought it was like that, how pleasantly wrong I was! If I was younger I would go live there!
Many thanks for a really interesting video. Most of my holidays as a kid in the 80s were on the Yorkshire coast esp Scarborough with Mum Dad and brother. Sadly only me left now but so many happy memories.
Well done Darren, never fluffed "cliff lift" once, dangerous tongue twister that one!!!!! Picture fade overload - brilliant. Good to see more of the seafront instead of the usual shots. 👍🏻
Just read some of the comments and I agree the fact that you superimpose as accurately as you do is fantastic, I love Scarborough, and always wondered what it would have looked like, you are bringing it to life..........Brilliant, watched this one 3 times....
I remember riding the North Bay lift opposite the corner café as a kid, didn't realise they had removed it all,but I haven't been to Scarborough for a walk around for many years. We used to holiday there most years and have ridden the Spa cliff lift many, many times as we used to go to the Spa buffet bar most nights after parking my dad's car in the streets opposite the upper entrance to the lift, walking through the gardens or accross the footbridge that brings you to the Grand Hotel. Happy days they were for me and my parents and grandparents that used to come with us. Thanks for the video of,what was for me my favourite holiday destination.
Just come across your channel via a video in my suggestions. Great video! Love the way you superimposed the old photos! Will be watching the rest! From north east England - spent lots of holidays in Scarborough in the 60s and 70s and still go there regularly. Thank you for uploading!
Brilliant video. We've recently fallen in love with Scarborough. We live in Rotherham and the nearest seaside town is cleethorpes, which we've always gone to for days out as its just over an hour away. But we discovered Scarborough and all it has to offer in the last couple of years. We try to make weekends of it now as it's a long way to go but it's worth it! I love the tramway, it's amazing that they've kept it and it's so handy.
Lol just been there three days ago cycling all over Scarborough, Filey, Flixton, Clayton bay, Ganton which is worth a visit btw. Why do I always go to the places just before you make a video? It happened with many other videos such as Lofthouse mine, Tingley line, St, Aiden's Wakefield, pudsey, batley etc. Looks like I will have to go back now :) as your info makes the trips so much better.
Another superb vlog. As a child I was taken to Scarborough for holiday over 60 years ago and have vague memories of the exciting cliff lift journeys but have no idea which cliff lift(s) we used. Also vague memories of Peasholme (?) Park. Have recent experience of a cliff lift in Hastings. In this age of trying to be carbon neutral water/gravity power should have more appeal.
Have you done a video about the castle ruins on the cliff top, I visited north bay recently and it caught my eye I’ve read a bit about it’s history, and also the park with the oriental gardens peasham park i might be wrong sorry if that’s wrong there’s a boat ride around a lake but I used the toilet before I went on and at the left of the toilets are giant steps can anyone remember what used to be at the top like a big Manor House or something , I only stayed on the north bay for about 4 hours it was cold and Windy and my little girls was getting windswept, there was too much to see in the short Space of time but I loved the history of place, great video by the way
Hi Darren just got round to watching the latest video on Scarborough i was born there but never new that it had a pier and five funicular rail lifts just goes to show you what you find out from your video's keep them coming kevin
4:04 your finger is on my old house, end of row on cliff, just before tje hotel where the revolving tower was located behind it, apartments on the site now.
Watched many of your videos, loved the one on Morley station as I have recently bought a building close to Bridge street and no knowledge of the area found it fascinating but now you are doing Scarborough that I investigated for my own reasons last year. Mainly from about 4/5 years old in 1973/74 I had memories of sitting on benches within a stone built area I felt was on the corner at North Bay also memories of going on a cliff lift, despite many visits through the years I was not aware there used to be a North bay lift, on finding some pictures I see the seating area is at the bottom and that is the lift I remember. I am sure you will be covering the old theme park on the hill with the chairs lifts, I took my own kids there in the 90's b4 it closed but it was great to discover it was actually the same place I remember as Marine Land back it the 70's also, fantastic work you are doing here, the comparison pics are awesome, Brid next maybe, can't remember if it was Brid or Scarborough that got bombed from the sea by German navy.
Hunting around the history last year is also the first I found out about the pier and its demise, real shame they didn't replace it. I read somewhere that Scarborough was also the first ever British seaside resort, something about some sea water baths that were the first attraction (don't hold me to that tho, I will look into it again to see if I am talking rubbish) thanks again for your great work.
And I am back again, hoping you have something on the "underground area" under the bridge on the South Bay side, apparently there was a zoo, theatre, shops and I think even streets of accommodation down there.
Scarborough was shelled by the German Navy in WW1. They badly damaged the Keep of the castle under the impression it had military value. Various buildings in the town were damaged by shell-fire. They would have been heavy shells even if the ships never used their main armement. Guns of 4-6" calibre
Nice one, Darren, and interesting subject, too. I remember being impressed by the number of cliff lifts that were operational in Scarborough during my first visits there, in 1977 and 79; and saddened at their demise when I was next there in 2001. True to character my friend Pat responded to a comment in a somewhat crowded Spa Lift about vibration, by producing her personal vibration from her handbag, amidst much laughter. And that was in the morning - she gets worse after a few drinks!! I also remember other, underground places in Scarborough that had all gone by 2003, that were an integral part of my sex education back in the days of widespread homophobia; as well as reading about the onetime existence of the pier.
Great video, been going to Scarborough for years and never knew about the pier . Not surprised it didn't last long the tides are monsters in the North bay.
I used to drive to Scarborough about twice a week from Bingley West Yorks through my job at the time in the early 80's. I had never been to the North always South Bay. What a great video yet again pal.
I had no idea there was a lift at the North Bay - despite having many rides there in the early 90s. Might have been because we pretty much bypassed the whole North Bay area & usually parked up just before the farground area (which I'm surprised to see still there around 4:58) to walk around the front for fish & chips etc. Didn't know about the South Bay lifts either - or I forgot about seeing them, it's an age thing as it must be 25 years or more since I last went there. Going to put that right in the near future as It's a fairly easy road trip👍 EDIT:- Ahhh - now I do have vague recollections about the central tramway, in fact I think I've actually ridden it. It's all coming back to me 🤣
Very interesting, you have taken me quite by surprise as there was an awful lot I didn't know. Scarborough is an amazing resort but there are still some valuable attractions that need a bit of TLC.
I lived in Scarborough for a few months and spent time exploring this wonderful town ,really enjoyed watching you're interesting history lesson on the old place .
Love it, very interesting info,Scarborough is always a must visit when I’m in country cannot beat winking whillie fish shop and the harbour bar for ice cream thanks for braving the rain
Lived in Scarborough All my life. Never knew about Thomas Warrick revolving Tower at the castle. Amazing Great Vid. I did know about The missing North bay Pier. I worked in the summer on the central lifts in the mid 80s. Had some fun back then. Appologies "Glen" for Wrecking the central lifts in the summer of 86 :) oops!
I've lived on the North Bay area all my life and had no idea about that second cliff lift. Been on the other North Bay one many times as a kid and knew about the pier and tower. Just a bit further up from there, there were two cable cars going up to the zoo and amusement park. There's so much that has been lost in the North Bay area in recent decades.
Another brilliant video.
What makes yours stand out is the super-imposing of old photos against a modern day image.

Good to see all the lifts covered, I took my first holiday in Scarborough about 1993 and we rode on all of the then extant lifts sad to see so much gone especially at the North Bay. Not been back since 2000.
Another great video, Darren. Your a fabulous producer of these videos. Cheers, mate! 🏴😊👍🇺🇸
Thank you kindly
I only live in Filey so know the area well. The North Bay Cliff railway still exists. It is in store at Launceston in Cornwall. The plan is to link the town to the steam railway with it.
Fantastic! I'm watching from Melbourne and was born in Scarborough and came here as a kid with my mum and dad. Brought back some lovely memories, thank you :)
Glad you enjoyed it
Love this place ! First went thirty years ago, I'm now 75 avoided it because it's on the east coast and living in notts the nearest seaside place is skegness which I don't like .I thought it was like that, how pleasantly wrong I was! If I was younger I would go live there!
Love the video, the fade ins are brilliant as usual Thanks
Wonderful use of overlaying the old photographs. Fabulous job, this was a really interesting so thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jeff. Plenty of the fades in all my videos.
@@AdventureMe True and they are all excellent!
Thanks Darren. Going to Scarborough next week so well timed.
Enjoy.
Thanks for another great video ,I live in Scarborough and this is fantastic to watch 😊👍
Love the photo overlays how clever and very interesting thank you so much for your social history content 💕👍
Most enjoyable Darren , love your trade mark overlays.....
Glad you like them!
Thanks Bob. I got used to saying it after 100 times lol
Just read some of the comments and I agree the fact that you superimpose as accurately as you do is fantastic, I love Scarborough, and always wondered what it would have looked like, you are bringing it to life..........Brilliant, watched this one 3 times....
Thanks mate. Plenty more of those coming in the next few videos.
Wow I never knew any of this 😮 I’ve alway been at the other side of Scarborough. Great Darren loved the old photos, now off to do garden. 😎
I thought i knew quite a big bout scarboro but was fascinated to learn bout the pier and the tower etc - thanks a lot i will view again cheers Rob
Thanks for that. I really enjoyed seeing some of the lifts, wonderful pieces of machinery and often overlooked. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.
Great adventure video, thank you. I remember the North Bay lift! I love Scarborough.
Nice to see the reportage, well presented and iam happy to see that People are still interested in this wonderful historic northen town
Enjoyed this. Love local history. Thanks
Thanks for watching
Well researched young man, even some facts this old Scarborian was unaware of, just love the way you morph the screens with old photos.
Thanks Pete. Glad to educate a former resident.
Great video.I also did not know about the pier and most of the cliff lifts. As a kid I have memories of going on one clift lifts on the south bay.
Thanks for the memories
Just come across your channel via a video in my suggestions. Great video! Love the way you superimposed the old photos! Will be watching the rest!
From north east England - spent lots of holidays in Scarborough in the 60s and 70s and still go there regularly.
Thank you for uploading!
Thanks Denise. The photo fade is something I do a lot of in my videos.
I love Scarborough, one of my favourite walk about.
Thanks for bringing all this history to our attention its a great channel! You should be very proud.
Thank you very much!
Excellent! Really wanted that last one to be working. I rode the Hastings east cliff lift and shot it in VR if you have a headset.
I'll check it out. Thanks.
Really enjoyed that thanks so much for the share
Brilliant video. We've recently fallen in love with Scarborough. We live in Rotherham and the nearest seaside town is cleethorpes, which we've always gone to for days out as its just over an hour away. But we discovered Scarborough and all it has to offer in the last couple of years. We try to make weekends of it now as it's a long way to go but it's worth it! I love the tramway, it's amazing that they've kept it and it's so handy.
Thanks for watching
Love your videos
Thank you
Lol just been there three days ago cycling all over Scarborough, Filey, Flixton, Clayton bay, Ganton which is worth a visit btw.
Just stumbled on this. Superb video. Been going to Scarborough for decades and never knew most of this. Many thanks for making this vid, much app
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Darren used those lifts many times good to know the history of them looking forward to more good stuff
Have you done a video about the castle ruins on the cliff top, I visited north bay recently and it caught my eye I’ve read a bit about it’s history, and also the park with the oriental gardens peasham park i might be wrong sorry if that’s wrong there’s a boat ride around a lake but I used the toilet before I went on and at the left of the toilets are giant steps can anyone remember what used to be at the top like a big Manor House or something , I only stayed on the north bay for about 4 hours it was cold and Windy and my little girls was getting windswept, there was too much to see in the short Space of time but I loved the history of place, great video by the way
That was so interesting. My late husband used to holiday there as a child with his mum and dad. Thankyou for an interesting video.
Enjoyed that. Liked the way you super-imposed the old images onto the new. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutly absorbing program . Thank you
Thanks for watching
Excellent Cliff Lift Tour - thank you - great to see the Pier the way you demonstrated it! #LearnSomethingEveryDay
Hi Darren just got round to watching the latest video on Scarborough i was born there but never new that it had a pier and five funicular rail lifts just goes to show you what you find out from your video's keep them coming kevin
Brilliant. I have done my job then. Thanks Kevin.
Excellent video, great views, love the photo super-imposition. Noice. :)
Thanks Greg. It's a regular thing of mine in my videos.
4:04 your finger is on my old house, end of row on cliff, just before tje hotel where the revolving tower was located behind it, apartments on the site now.
Thanks for watching
Another one of your great videos many thanks for making and sharing.
I've come to Scarborough throughout my life and never knew it had a pier - or other cliff lifts! Thank you
Great stuff mate kept us going watching your adventures over the last few years 😊
Thanks mate
I go there 5or6 times a year it’s my favourite place. Thanks.
Great video again Darren, always entertaining and informative without getting bogged down with facts, thanks
Thanks for watching. More to come like this.
Another good and interesting video, thank you for sharing
Great video, been going to Scarborough for years and never knew about the pier . Not surprised it didn't last long the tides are monsters in the North bay.
Brilliant video. Never knew about the Pier or the Cliff lifts at North Bay.
Me neither until I researched this.
I used to drive to Scarborough about twice a week from Bingley West Yorks through my job at the time in the early 80's. I had never been to the North always South Bay. What a great video yet again pal.
Yeah same for me when young, we always went to south bay.
Love what you do its fascinating to know the history of all these places you visit particularly like the before and after fades 👍
Glad you enjoyed
I had no idea there was a lift at the North Bay - despite having many rides there in the early 90s. Might have been because we pretty much bypassed the whole North Bay area & usually parked up just before the farground area (which I'm surprised to see still there around 4:58) to walk around the front for fish & chips etc. Didn't know about the South Bay lifts either - or I forgot about seeing them, it's an age thing as it must be 25 years or more since I last went there. Going to put that right in the near future as It's a fairly easy road trip👍
EDIT:- Ahhh - now I do have vague recollections about the central tramway, in fact I think I've actually ridden it. It's all coming back to me 🤣
Excellent yet again...
Our family went to Scarborough for our holidays we used the lifts ofton, I still love to go there. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Very interesting, you have taken me quite by surprise as there was an awful lot I didn't know. Scarborough is an amazing resort but there are still some valuable attractions that need a bit of TLC.
Thanks. Glad you got something out of it.
Coffee in the garden and a new episode sorted👌
This is just brilliant a fantastic video . So much effort has gone into this , very well put together.
Thanks Steven. It did take some research but all in the name of entertainment
Thanks for another educational and interesting video, the amount of research and video overlay is also worth a mention.
Thanks Mike
Love scarborough. Usded the central lift often as a lad, usdd to be next to a massive arcade.
I lived in Scarborough for a few months and spent time exploring this wonderful town ,really enjoyed watching you're interesting history lesson on the old place .
Thanks Peter
Love it, very interesting info,Scarborough is always a must visit when I’m in country cannot beat winking whillie fish shop and the harbour bar for ice cream thanks for braving the rain
Couldn't agree more! It was only a Yorkshire spit, nothing too wet lol
This is one place I've never been to. I love your perfect photo blending.
Thanks mate. You should check it out.
I remember going on the lift when I was younger, I really enjoyed it. As Nd loved your video.
