Phill, question: this might be a dumb question -- do you look at music first and determine where you will take a breath throughout and then take in amount of air needed for each part? Do you make notes on sheetmusic for that? thanks
Good question. To be honest most of my playing is sight reading or very little rehearsal. So planning where to breathe becomes an automatic thing. I listen to the shape of the phrase and breathe at the end of the phrase. I try to be consistent with the amount of air I take in for each breath most of the time. Occasionally I will need a larger or smaller breath. But usually it's the same amount of air in each time for me.
@@PhillONeillTrumpet Thanks. Sorry, one more question: if you have air left and end of Phrase and plan on another breath, how do you manage to exhale and then take a new breath before playing again? That is a real struggle for me.
This is typically an issue for people who aren't blowing through and out of the trumpet. Try this exercise and see if things improve for you. ua-cam.com/video/FWsRCTmniRE/v-deo.html
THANKS Phil!!! something that hit me while watching is in my case being a tense individual is to trying to relax and not tense up even when breathing.
Awesome. The W-H-O breath will help you relax at every breath point. Gradually you'll become more relaxed while you play. Good luck
Thanks for this, really interesting, I'll be trying this later.
Glad to hear it. Let me know what you find helps your playing the most?
Good Video Phill.
Glad you enjoyed it.
What take away are you going to use in you're practice this week?
