From what little info I could gather, the instrument used in sounding is originally a medical instrument (also called a sound) that is used for probing and dilating passages, including the urethra. They seem to get their name from depth sounding, the process of determining the depth of a body of water by sending a sounding line to the bottom. (Sound in this case is based off the geographic term, not the synonym for noise)
