I had Fall on my Amazon wish list. I added it to my active cart after hearing this Google Talk episode. Can't wait to get it.

Huge fan of Neal. But having never heard him read aloud, I would have expected a bit more emoting.

He’s a writer not an orator.

Very clever ruse, Google. Generating a deepfake to present a respected author ostensibly concerned about deepfakes. I know what you're up to.

ie: "Younger" folks do not believe America successfully landed men on the Moon and returned them home safely.

It took me two or three tries to get through cryptonomicon, but once it clicked it became one of my favorite novels.

@@witeshade I'm 60% of the way through but this novel didn't click like others written Neal i.e. snow crash and one of my favorite novels anathem.
may be because it is less sci fi and more history.

The trick to Cryptonomicon is to realize that you're reading four stories.

Cryptonomicon was the first book I read by Neal. The title caught my eye in an airport bookstore. I had never heard of him before. The "crypto" part of the title is what got my attention because of what my job was in the Army. Then, reading the short bio on the back cover I was surprised to see that Neal was born at Fort Meade as was I. To add to that little coincidence, as a part of that bio there was a photo of him as a child reading a book on cryptology. About the same age my dad had given me a book on the same subject.
I loved Cryptonomicon. The blending of English and American history with the events in WWII was fascinating. I read the book through, though it took a couple of months.
