That phone call was wonderful. The fury in the officer's voice, his comments, his orders. Perfect naval officer. And then, we have the Costa Concordia's Captain...😢

Here in Italy, "captain" Schettino has now became synonymous with shame, negligence and cowardice... If asked, no one wants to talk about him, and if s/he does it's with reluctancy.
I’m surprised Captain hasn’t offed himself due to publicly being labeled a coward. I’m guessing the fact that he’s in prison has limited his opportunity to attempt to kill himself, since in prison the inmates are usually watched like hawks 24/7. And at least in prison he can claim with some “pride” (for lack of a better word), that at least he’s not a pedophile (aka, “the worst of the worst”).
I'm sorry your country has to be known as the one that produced him. If it helps, your English is better than that of most English-speakers and has already improved my impression of Italians.
I heard that the captain was busy navigating his 'ship' thru Moldovan waters when the accident occurred. To the families of the unfortunate passengers who perished, my deepest condolences. And may you all find peace, closure, and healing..
I’m glad you described the actual events that took place just after the ship hit the rocks many earlier descriptions made out like the captain did something right to get the ship where it ended up but he did nothing the people were lucky the ship drifted to a shallow area before completely sinking (experts knew this fact quite early on in the investigation)
Yes that's right! I remember the report saying that the captain intentionally beached the ship against the island, a complete contradiction of what appears to have happened according to this video!

Super insightful video, and a very interesting topic especially the salvage procedures! That said, what a shame those people lost their lives because of the incompetency and complacency of Captain Coward. That audacity for him to catch a lifeboat while passengers were stuck, confused and terrified on board, is disgusting. Hope he enjoys his 16 year cinderblock-camp sleepover.

It's unfortunate that some of the divers hired ended up getting caught stealing from the ship, it just brings a bad rep to the diving community. I originally learned about this tragedy and honestly incredible amount of cowardness found in the captain and some of the people involved through Internet Historian, and if you've finished watching this video and want to know a little more on the aftermath and some nuance details I'd recommend watching Internet Historian's video on it, after watching this one of course. Great vid as always, I'm inching closer to have seen all the videos in your channel and not a single one I've watched so far has anything negative I could say about it, great research, great narration, great script, and lovely host. Thanks for creating these amazing videos, I know they'll blow up in popularity in no time.
@@LiberatedMind1 If you're an enthusiast or an amateur diver who wants a memorabilia piece, I could understand that, but as a hired diver to an assignment that is quite important, to go out and steal is pretty shit thing to do, you're supposed to be recovering bodies and helping salvage the ship, not make money off a tragedy you're already being paid to help understand and help with closure.

There is no „life“ sentence in italy or rather 16 years=life
Great video! Very professional and informative. Hats off and I’m subscribed. Well done young man
Thanks, not often I get called young man anymore🤣. I’ll take it
He "fell into a lifeboat while trying to rescue passengers". 🤣🤣🤣
That’s both hilarious and infuriating!
Mediterranean men have hugely inflated egos, especially if balding and short, almost juvenile, jewellery is an indication of these narcisstic men,

I'm sorry your country has to be known as the one that produced him. If it helps, your English is better than that of most English-speakers and has already improved my impression of Italians.
@@boiledelephant Thank you very much.
😂😂😂 They said get your ass back there he said I'm good brother an hung up😮
Everytime i watch a doc on this i hear new stuff. It still blows my mind how this happened and how the caption handled the situation after making such a huge mistake
The level of incompetence and irresponsibility is staggering.
New Waterline Stories episode, hell yea. Not only are your videos really entertaining, the comment section is literal gold. So many epxeriences that people have to share. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to the next one!
you nailed it, peter! Great content attracts great comments, so interesting!
So we're blaming the rock now, are we? I suppose the iceberg lay in wait for the Titanic, too.
That damn iceberg. 🤣
He wasn't even onboard !
You didn't know that the iceberg stalked the Titanic? 🤣
It wont get much better, when he gets out. He is universally reviled, and no1 carries a grudge like Italians.
My heart goes out to you. I am so thankful that the laws have become more reasonable and you can now live a normal life. I'm also happy to see you appear healthy. May you get the needed treatment ongoing.
A villain was created that day but many heroes too.
So happy I’ve discovered your channel. Some of the best production I’ve seen and not just on UA-cam. You have a new subscriber and I look forward to you reaching 1M subs and getting that plaque for the wall
Thanks. 1M would be amazing. Right now I'm just looking forward to 100k.
@@waterlinestories Rome wasn’t built in a day, keep going as you are and you’ll get there.
I have never hated anybody more than this Cowardly “Captain”. He willingly let those people die to save himself. I truly hope he rots in prison and suffers.
Listening to DeFalco tear him a new one on the call is absolute chef's kiss magnificent
Whats stealing, it may as well go somewhere.
@@biel1351 Stealing from who, its an empty ship. What's wrong with making money, everyone does that.
@@LiberatedMind1 It's just wrong profeteering when you've been paid to salvage a ship and its components, it's just theft.
@@biel1351 Why is it wrong, who is being wronged, and who is being robbed?
That part where they shifted the oil using water and pipes was damn impressive thats some movie quality thinking. Superb job every rescuer did that day.
It's frankly amazing that there weren't more deaths, but it's infuriating this happened in the first place. I'm glad the captain is in jail.

Thank you for these details. I don't know what I was thinking, but I never realized how many months this job took. And I never dreamed the cost was so staggering. Thank you so much🙄💯
I don’t see how more evaluations drills would have changed anything, you had an incompetent captain, end of story
24:30 to 24:40 he's sharing a bunk in a 8x10 cell with a well hung Ganster named Salvatore
He can't abandon ship this time
16 years in Prison against the number of deaths that 'Captain Jump Ship' caused, equated to nothing more than a folly .. he'd be in there for life if I had the power to convict the coward !!!
Will the Captain of sailing yacht that sank with 7 deaths , get a similar sentence?
6 months for each life? What the hell is wrong with those judges? w0w
Tbh it wasnt just the Captain that was at fault and most of the crew should have gone to prison because many of them fully knew what was happening. The was no reason to follow the captains orders when lives were at risk.
I already knew most of the story but this presentation was captivating, the narration clear and competent, and with additional important details I was not aware of. Thankyou.
The Costa Concordia displaced over 114,000 tons, not 60,000 as you state at the beginning of your video.
I must say that was the most "brilliant" way to flow an ad into your video!
Job well done my friend
I don’t think any other channel gets me nearly as excited about new uploads as Waterline Stories does. Keep up the great work!
I will never understand how a human being can act like Captain Coward
Some just lack selflessness and fear for their own safety too much to the point where they can’t care about others. It’s a shame he didn’t learn much about who some of the real brave, selfless captains in history were.
Your story telling is above reproach- just superb.
Thanks.
Thanks🤛🏻
Sooooo… when is the champagne bottle going on trial!? I mean it is the bottles fault for all of this right? It didn’t break!!!

Thank you for such a informative explanation of what happened. 👍

I was so excited to see another great story from my favorite site. A very interesting story. I hope they are not allowed to "sail by islands anymore?!
They are and they still do it all the time. There's nothing wrong with it if you do it right. This was not handled well at all.
@@waterlinestories Wow, that lends me to believe another accident like this one Will happen again. Thanks for another great story. I give credit to those salvation divers, wow!!
At about 6 months of jail time for each person killed seems like a bargain for the captain. Not so much for each of the people killed.
This captain wasn`t really capable.
Nope. All fun and games till the ship hits the rock.
