  • A rural Oregon school is fighting back against plans to build a mega chicken factory in its backyard and throwing its support behind Senate Bill 85 to halt the proliferation of mega chicken operations in their community.
Lourde School was established in 1898 in rural Linn County between Scio and Lyons, in the unincorporated community of Jordan in the Thomas Creek Valley.
The school is centrally located in an agricultural community, established in 1844, which currently produces commercial grass seed, mushrooms, cattle, blueberries, Christmas trees, timber, grains, organic vegetables, dairy and fish.
In a four-room schoolhouse, the school serves 49 students K-8 and works as a gathering place for the local farming community. The school puts on an annual community picnic, puts on Missoula Children’s Theatre performances and even has students go caroling during the holiday season.
Unfortunately, just down the road from the school, a mega chicken factory is being planned that would devastate the school and vibrant community. Evergreen Ranch would house 750,000 chickens before slaughter - and millions of chickens per year - in 16 massive barns just a half-mile from the school. If permitted, this operation would become the largest chicken factory in Oregon and is being funded by a private equity firm based on the East Coast.
