for powering my QDX, I just use a USB-C PD to barrel connector 12v cable and as long as your USB-C power source (battery, charger, etc) supports 12v PD you are good to go. Easy to charge and can be used to also power your cell phone, laptop, etc.

When doing POTA, always get more than the minimum number of contacts! I will say that WSTJ-X somewhat limits your ability to incorrectly copy a callsign, but I've had it happen once or twice on SSB and been saved by those one or two extra contacts I got as a buffer. If you miscounted though, those one or two could also save you. I've got a CaHR Ares (9:1) antenna, but think I want to get the Apollo (49:1) and make it a linked EFHW like this. I also have a linked dipole for 10, 20, and 40 I made using a K6ARK 100w kit. Super compact. If I could get my hands on another one of those kits, I'd probably use that instead.

Just use a buck converter set to 11.9 volts. That's what I do with my QMX, & it works fine. About the EFHW, are you hiking some distance to get to your location, making it necessary to limit the weight of your carry pouch so you don't bring a tiny tuner? I get that, I once walked a ways to the top of Mt. Davis, PA. BUT IF YOU'RE DRIVING TO YOUR LOCATIONS, WHY ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT A FEW MORE OUNCES FOR A TUNER? Ditching the devotion to half wave antennas was the smartest thing I've done in over 50+ years as a ham. For portable ops I now use either a 53 or 82 foot wire along with a hand sized auto tuner to work 80-6 meters (dependingon which radio I pull from the suv). No fussing with jumpers in the air; I just work whatever band & mode I want without getting up. Piece of cake, and easier to use than a HW. Whether
I did use a buck converter when I first got it, but why would I want to carry another piece of gear if I could just make a battery for this radio? Much more convenient. As far as the antenna is concerned, I'm not into tuners. They can fail, you can forget a jumper coax, the battery could die, etc. etc. etc. Any problem with a tuner means you're most likely not getting on the air. With the linked EFHW's I make, they're already resonant on 40, 20, 15, and 10. Adding links for the other bands makes them more versatile, while never having to rely on a piece of equipment to make my radio happy. That's how I roll.
I don't think it will be very long before you see SSB added to the QMX's! I saw a vid Hans "leaked" showing SSB transmitting from one QMX and being RX on another in the lab. Nope. Just cut for the bands you want and link them all together. In my case I cut the first wire for 17 meters. Then added a link for 20, then 30 and then the rest of the wire after 30 gets you 40. If they are all linked you'll get 40, 20, 15, & 10, but when I want 17 or 30 I can just unplug the link and I'm resonant again. At the end of the day, it's just a 40 meter EFHW with links cut for the other bands.

People say I can do it from the Terminal on my Mac but that's above my pay grade. Mike, I have a QMX on order. I just saw a post in QRP LABS groups. Io from an owner who cannot get fldigi to play nice, some issues with the audio.
Now I see that you had to get someone to tweak the settings using putty. Would like to know more if you can do so. Concerned as I am learning cw but for the meantime intend to use for digital modes. I may rethink my purchase if this is not easily overcome.
Tks

If you're smarter than me with computers (most people are) and can use Putty to get into the QMX, the fix takes a matter of seconds. People say I can do it from the Terminal on my Mac but that's above my pay grade. I don't know what was done other than what I mention in the video, but it had to do with adjusting the audio levels per band. He boosted them up to 65 and that seemed to work. I think they came at like ~30.
Yeah, I am your level or worse with this putty and terminal stuff. Have to think about this
@@rsimons5952 One of these days I'm going to hook it up to my windows computer to actually figure it out. If and when I do, I'll make a video. It is certainly frustrating, but I don't think the learning curve will be that hard. Famous last words of course.
An item for QMX to add to the firmware update list. @@hamradiotube
Grape ape?😂 sorry but no I’ve never even heard of grape ape, in the early 80’s I was already married and had two kids. I guess that shows my age doesn’t it.
5 try’s you might as well be docking up
We call it space docking.
Grape ape! Yes, I remember! Great video as always!

Yes!!!
I had them build it and it's completely deaf on 20m. Fairly disappointed.
Huh. That sucks.
@hamradiotube I hear there's a fix. I haven't tried it yet
you dont putty a mac...use terminal... Microsoft was too cheapm when os X was good - things have changed. The tables are ALMOST turned... I miss those early versions of OSX
Ft8 is gay
I ordered my QMX in early August and I am now number 22 on the list! Soon come! N7BBQ
I know the feeling!!!
Mike you have inspired me to make my Mac work for the hobby. I use Mac for everything and only have windows for ham radio but always prefer the Mac. I’ve had some trouble getting audio codec on WSJT-X but probably just need to go back and rewatch your setup video again and maybe again after that lol.
There’s almost zero things I need a windows computer for. Maybe a couple times a year for something stupid. Just take the plunge!!
