The day we visited Box Hill, those metal gates on the munitions fort were open and we wandered around inside the building, even going to the floor below. It was pitch black inside, we explored by the light of our mobile phones.
At the risk of revealing my age, I used to meet my school pals at the weekends at the bottom of Box Hill with packed lunch of course. Mods and rockers gathered there too ( my age reference) and we witnessed plenty of clashes
Box Hill was already a tourist spot in the early 1800s. There's a famous scene in Jane Austen's 'Emma' where Emma and her companions have a picnic on top of Box Hill, and Emma humiliates poor Miss Bates with some mocking remarks. High drama in Austenian terms! [ I just found an extract from one of the TV versions: ua-cam.com/video/VUm2FZTYpgM/v-deo.html ]
What a fine upstanding gentleman that was who took you around the fort! 😆
Yes - a lovely chap. I would ignore all the guff they say about him! :)
That's a fabulous place the fort looks in quite good condition
