- So it's Home Coming week at my school and everyone is supposed to dress up according to the theme of the day. This is what the class of 2014 did on group day (the day that the students themselves dress in whatever theme they want to collectively.) I myself was invited to join in via Facebook, and the theme was chosen via a poll. I did NOT partake in this event but I did record it and I thought that the world should see this. I grew up around people like this doing these sorts of things, but does this seem weird to you? Some of my friends who just so happen to be black saw this and were very offended. You can debate wither or not the students had the right to run around the school gym with a larger than scale Confederate flag, but what I personally think it boils down to is that it should not have been done because it is offensive to people.

Slaves was just one of many issues, even if that is the case with the rest of the modern world abolishing slavey the south would have eventually done the same, it would end sometime in the 1880's-1890's maybe even earlier.

Offensive or not, they had the right to, they done it, and I was actually proud to see them do it. I'm a Southern American, and I am not racist. I have the third national flag hanging in my room, along with a Confederate flag, and a Confederate flag blanket I use to cover up with ever night. It should not be offensive though. Even if it is used in bad ways, it should not be offensive. It's not the flag that's racist, it's the ones who use it in that way. Keep it Flying |X|

I abhor the slavery that was their trigger for rebellion, but I also support their principle of state's rights. We were founded as a nation to be a union of sovereign states yet for the last 150 years there has been a steady slide of the Federal government overstepping its bounds. The Fed should be mediating between the states and representing the Union as a single face to the World. But at the end of the day each state should have its own say on how matters are handled within its borders - that was the deal, when the original 13 joined.
I am glad slavery is gone, I think the Confederates should have spoken up sooner if they truly cared about state sovereignty rather than waiting until slavery was threatened to speak up, as that is one subject not worth fighting for. But as long as people expect me to get all teary-eyed when seeing a rainbow coalition flag or to nod in reverence when BLM is mentioned ... then they can keep their hands OFF the Stars and Bars.
I do not stand for what the Confederate flag represents to some people. But as a United States veteran I was (and still am) willing to DIE to defend their right to wave it! Your friends felt offended? Tell them to grow up. This is part of life.

@@ECase5 it was southern aggression. The south fired the first shots on fort Sumter. Caused the most money in damages more than any in American history. They raided federal property. They captured federal forts and armories. And we’re raising an army from November of 1860 till the start of the civil war April 1861. It was southern aggression.
Doesn't seem weird to me at all. First off I'm not White and not Christian just in case somebody starts stereotyping me. I was raised in an area where I was told the Confederate Flag was racist and a symbol of hate. But noticing the fact that tens of millions(at least) supported it made me question the validity of what I was told. After researching and observing years Culture, US Politics, and the "News" it does seem there's a prejudice against those that support the Confederate Flag. Majority see the Confederate Flag as a symbol of southern pride, patriotism, culture and history while a few bad eggs use it as a symbol of hate and racism and immoral political agendas.
What many are mislead about is that it's not exclusive to one race but embraced by various. African Americans being the second most supportive and each race supportive of each other. Those that claim it's exclusively a symbol of hate basically grabbed the minority(bad eggs) and painted everybody as a whole as racist. This is the main method politics in general has become. Now I personally don't align myself with a political party anymore since it's now embraced by both sides. But I do know this, majority of Democrats and Republicans are good people. They just happen to be misrepresented by idiots. Also sorry for writing a paragraph 😐

Well since the Confederate flag is not universally accepted as being a racist symbol by the US population calling it a racist symbol would be inaccurate.
The only people who misuse it as such are themselves racists and those who condemn those who think otherwise are little better than those who wear white sheets in the first place.

I have been reading more into the Civil War as I am largely ignorant and would like to know more about what was likely the most important and the most tragic event in our history.
While trying to approach it unbiased as even today there are large groups who speak of the War of Northern Aggression there is one thing I do know. That flag, even of it is about your heritage and history, is a flag unfurled at battle in as an enemy of these United States. It's sole existence was a banner to lead men

The confederates left the country and started a war. The killed American soldiers in a vain attempt to continue enslaving black people. Ultimately, the confederates, who were weaklings, were soundly defeated by the United States of America.
