  • Meet Greek artist Takis whose career spans more than seventy years. The artist's pioneering kinetic sculptures use a combination of magnets and electricity to create mesmerising pieces that float, generate light or resonate sound.
We travelled to Athens, Greece to meet the artist and visit the KETE / Takis Foundation.
See Takis at Tate Modern from 2 July to 27 October 2019: bit.ly/2DdbYka

I went to this exhibition in Tate. Beautiful experience of the artist using technology and often industrial material to produce a very human response and symbolism. Very original work. I highly recommend anyone interested to simply visit the exhibition.

Rest in peace, brilliant artist. Hope god enjoys your creations up there as much as we did down here.

Takis was an immensely interesting artist. The Tate show was a revelation. Good, informative talk too. Sad Takis has recently passed away.

Don't want to treat Takis' work with contempt, after all I am just a dilettante, but I do not see something special here. Μaybe in his time the use of magnetic fields in arts, especially in sculpting, was something innovative and inspiring, but I don' think this is the case anymore. Take any student of architectural computation with some basic knowledge of arduino programming and they can produce much more impressive work. In any case, one has to admire the fact that Takis managed to produce his art and keep his dream alive in a very challenging environment, in difficult times, which was Greece in the 40's and 50's.

The answer is hidden in your sayings. Takis' work should be approached reference to the period of time he created his works. Someone has to look at the effect of his work had and still has to the spectator. A naίf aproach will be to evaluate the work of Takis with todays knowledge. It is equivalent to say that a 2yo child of today is a genius handling an iPad while 50years ago child could not even spell its name. To cut a long story short, the influence of his work can be seen to these days by many later generation artists.

My kid could have done this vibes here. Reminder that art isn't a sport, and isn't always intended to impress.

He was not an artist. No talent at all. Just some decorative open-air “sculptures” variants and some stupid applications of physics. Just for clueless in art people. He never gave an extensive interview because he was not able to say something worth and meaningful.

Can you tell us in a few words what is art for you? Takis created something unique, something nobody did before and since. In my view that is art of a genius!!
