Love the manner you use to talk about this. There is no man behind the curtain here, there is no "if you're academically inclined", just "if you want to do this, work hard in this". And I love that, I feel like it's a message lost these days. Really good information as well, can't wait to delve into your other videos.
I'm nearly 30 and going back to school, starting over from the BSc, in Public Health. This video/ has been a HUGE help in guiding me to where I want to go and giving me a focus and direction for my school work. Thank you so much!
Mat Strote thanks for the comment - much appreciated (glad you found it useful). Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any thoughts or suggestions re future content.
Thanks for the comment. One option is to do some volunteer work or work as an intern for a short period of time (so you could for example apply to the World Health Organization's intern program). The problem with that is of course that you won't get paid and you still need to make ends meet. If you have some spare time, you could just reach out to people and organizations and ask them if there is anything you can do to help out. Remember to ask for a reference (or a job) when its over. Good luck
Thanks for the question Karen. The world of 'global health' desperately needs people like you that have a "business management" background. The day to day work in any organization is really about managing people, managing projects and managing budgets! How easy or hard it is to find a job is a tough question. I guess it depends on factors like your mobility (are you prepared to relocate?) and what level of seniority you're wanting to enter into to. Next step: network like crazy!
Great video. Thank you. I'm a dentist by training and will be starting an MPH in September here in Accra,Ghana at the ENSIGN college of Public Health. It's a joint partnership between University of UTAH and the Kwame krumah university of Kumasi. I live in a continent where commucable and non-communicable diseases kill millions of people every year. Statistics are dreadful despite the fact that a lot of international, governmental and private institutions are working hardly to reduce the impact of these diseases on the population. I'm sure the MPH will give me skills and knowledge that I need to be able to make a positive impact in my community, my country and the whole continent.
Thanks for the comment françois chimoun - I'm glad to hear that you're doing an MPH and its good to see your level of enthusiasm and commitment to improving the health of your community. Good luck!
françois chimoun thanks for the comment. Good luck with your studying. I've spent time in Accra - its a fantastic part of the world. I'm sure that you'll have a positive impact on the health and lives of many people in your community. Good luck!!!
haha, thanks for the comment M Pablo - will definitely try to speak more slowly in the future (I know that I have a pretty thick South African accent!)
Hi Martina - thanks for the comment and for the great question. It's interesting (and fantastic) that you've got a very specific interest. Vaccine research is certainly one of the most exciting areas of public health out there! Given your focussed interest, you might want to do an MSc in vaccinology (instead of an MPH). A PhD is a great option if you're interest is in pure research and a DrPH is a great option if you're interested in programmatic implementation of research results.
Thank you so much Dr. Martin. I just graduated with my B.A. in International Studies with an emphasis in Global Health and a minor in Public Health. I have been overwhelmed with questions about what should I do next...this video really helped to answers questions and make it more clear what I should do next. Again Thank you so much!
Dr. Martin, Thank you for posting this informative video. I am beginning my MPH in a few months and am very excited about the opportunities. I have spent the last 31 years of my career in radiology management, specifically women's services. I did have the opportunity to work with RAD-AID in 2012 in India and that experience got me interested in public health. Looking forward to more videos!
Hi Lisa Slavick Glad you enjoyed the video! Lots more coming.. We're now doing a weekly show called "TWiGH" (This Week in Global Health). Please get in touch if there is any content that you'd like us to cover!
It's a great question Haidar - I think that the trick is to get a sense of what aspects of global health most interest you (as a first step). Happy to chat more though.
Hi Tess Bright well I'm glad to hear that you're excited (and don't worry about being nervous - its natural). There are definitely some exciting career prospects in global health / public health - good luck!
Dear Dr. Greg, I am enjoying watching your youtube videos. I am shaping my future in global health field and predict that we might cross our path one day. I did an internship at WHO HQ in Geneva and now awaiting my master programme in global health at Karolinska Institutet. Once again, thank you for your brilliant initiative in sharing knowledge and experience in global health. See you when I see you. Best, Fadjar Wibowo
Hi Dr. Greg, just wanna say thank for this informative video. I just applied to a Master of Public Health in Hong Kong and your video had given me a very good idea of what Public Health involves and what skills sets will be required from me. Thanks again!
Thinking of moving into consultancy...and WHO ultimately...not sure yet. Will see how it goes..btw just wanna say another thank you for the working at WHO video! You are a genius
Thanks for the great video Dr Martin! I couldn't have found it at a better time when I'm transitioning from hospital pharmacy to global health, probably Access to Medicines. Just started my mph program and your greatly done overview of how to go about it and the various avenues one can follow is a tremendous eye-opener for me.
Global Health with Greg Martin Its really remarkable that I found ur page today through linkedin. you have so many videos that cover everything I'm trying to learn, i'm really grateful...too bad you don't give our certifications. I'll reserve further questions for when/after I've gone through most of your videos...don't wanna ask redundant questions of which you've already provided info/answers.
Thanks Klement Jaidzeka for the comment. I'm glad you like the videos. Please feel free to ask question or make suggestions about content for further videos. Have a great day! :)
A Big Thanks you All the Way from Egypt....... Finding your Blog is treasure .... I just ended a Fellowship In Emory In global Health which urge me to think about my Masters , I am deciding either go for Health Economics (being a pharmcist) gaining specific skill set or Going for a General Global Health program in UK. Your clear simple mapping help my thinking processes, Yet I still cant decide as i am a knowledge craving person, only known for me Academia is not for me. the bigger challenge is to find a job as I am preparing for my Masters ?!!!!!
Thanks for the comment Mariam! Good luck with your future career in global health. I'm sure that you've got exciting times ahead and that you'll be able to add value in lots of interesting ways.
It would have been nice to see this on the first day of graduate school! It helps to demystify a complex network that can take a lot of time to untangle.
Excellent video. Very informative and I enjoyed the graphics! Also, do not forget about the DrPH in terms of practice-based professional public health degrees!
thanks dr. Greg, it is very usefull information in relation to Global health and whould like to add some points mainly the relation between Global health, population, development and environment. in addition to what you mentioned I think adolescent health, teen age pregnancy abortion and sexual transmitted diseases in addition to environmental health and crucially needed for finding a job in global health
Very helpful video. Thank you. I am a manager working in the healthcare practice of a management consulting firm. Looking to transition to career in global health/international development to make a more meaningful impact. just starting to make a plan to start looking for opportunities.... your information here is very encouraging..
Hi ashishs79 - great to hear that you're interested in moving across to global health. Let me know if I can help at all. I think that you'll bring a great skill set from the consulting working into the global health space... good luck..
Global Health with Greg Martin Thank you. I am wondering if I need a certification or masters in public health or health policy. I am an engineer and have been doing healthcare consulting for 10 years. While I feel that my business consulting and health care background make me a good fit, I don't have any global health domain knowledge like you describe in the video and so might have it hard to get a foot in the door. that's my confusion.. any suggestions greatly appreciated
Hi ashishs79 - I understand your problem. It'll be difficult for me to give you a lot of advice in this text discussion. I've set up a mechanism whereby people can book some time to chat with me online (face to face) and talk through these issues - helpouts.google.com/102747256038799395194/ls/803ce2088ac8e53e Let me know if you'd like to connect and I'll talk you through the GH landscape.
Very helpful and informative! As someone who got my BSc in Nutrition and is trying to become involved in Global Health, my question is about how to get the right experience to apply for my MPH and what more I can do to find jobs that are relevant to global health.
Can you guide us on the best way to prepare to study a degree in public health. In particular putting together a personal statement where there is a lack of relevant work experience or internships. My narrow interest is in water and sanitation improvement in the global context and water borne diseases.
Greg! I'm so appreciative of your helpful advice and experience. I am a 40-year-young single mom finishing her BS in Psychology. I think I have to switch gears going into my graduate program, I was thinking of concentrating on the MS in education and promotion. My goal is to do global work and wind up with the UN or WHO. I'm not choosing the MPH program because I can't bare THAT many statistic and biology courses - I'm just not cut for that. Do I have a shot? Also, I would love to hear your suggestions of other public health concentrations that can get me on the right path. Thank you ever so much for helping all of us find our way.
Thanks for the question - getting skills in the area of education and promotion will certainly enable you to add value in the global health space. If that is where your passion is, my suggestion is that you go for it. Good luck. Keep us posted!
Dear Dr. Greg. Thank you 🙏 so much for this great 👍 video. I am a medical doctor, epidemiologist (DrPH) with an MPH specialization in health management & policy. I’ve been working as an independent consultant for three years and currently a part-time lecturer. Any concrete advice on how to get into global health UN and WHO positions other than consulting work?
This was so helpful to guide me as I've just finished my MSc in Public Health! Thanks Greg. I would really like to chat with you personally if possible.
Hey there Dr. Martin, In the swamps of graduating with my bachelors and diving into the global health realm, thanks for the video! It's hard work trying to stay driven about the subjects you care about when you need to make ends meet and you're not striking gold. I've heard lots of "Do's" in terms of what to try and pursue, any "donts?" Since I feel like I've heard all the encouraging pieces, do you have anything that us recent grads should NOT do, but may not know to avoid? Perhaps in regards to applications, side jobs, anything else you may be able to offer?
I just saw your video on public and global health via youtube and I am very interested in this topic. However, I would like to know what the exact difference is between a master in global health or a master in public health. To me it seems like the same kind of topics are addressed. Also, is it important to have a master in public health to work in this field? In the Netherlands they offer masters like 'health and society' (Wageningen University), which seem to cover the same kind of topics. Thank you for answering my questions.
Roos Dekker thanks for your question. So the difference between an MPH and a MSc Global Health is simply that a masters in global health will, in addition to provision training in the usual public health disciplines, try to give you an understanding of some of the global processes and institutions that impact on health (by global, we mean "supranational" - outside of the geopolitical boundaries of any nation state). A masters in global health will probably also include "comparative health systems" looking at the different ways that countries address public health. There is likely to be an emphasis on public health in developing countries too. A masters in public health is likely to focus on the health problems in the country that it is offered. Getting a masters of some kind is useful, yes. The kind of masters you do is far less important that the specific skills that you leave with (which is really up to you). I hope that this helps.
I am medical student from a developing country. I am involved in community work. How can I build my CV after med school in order to work in the area of global health. What are the work oppurtunities available? Do I need an MD OR MPH directly? Should I opt for doing an MPH in famous collages like John hopkins and harvard? Does it make any difference?
Mani Harika Tummala Thanks for the question. If you're wanting to work in "global health" then the best thing to do is to get experience in general "public health" in your country. You don't need an MD. At some point it's a good idea to get an MPH (but don't feel as if you have to get it right away). Going to a famous school like Johns Kopkins is nice but not essential. They are also extremely expensive. I you can afford it or can get a scholarship then by all means, go ahead. Otherwise, study at a local university, get involved with local NGOs. Write papers where you can. Network like crazy. And keep your eyes open for the right opportunity. Good luck!
Sorry for the repeat questions, but I wanted to ask in a new thread if you, or anyone you know provide career consults in the field of public health. Specifically, I'm interested in the field of maternal and child health. Thank you!
Thank you for a great video that summarises all the options out there. I have finished my MIPH at the University of Sydney and is currently applying to field posts in Sub-Saharan Africa. I have a question regarding faith-based organisations. I have volunteered with them for a while, and I'm finding myself having to apply to them again as it's generally easier to get into them compared to secular organisations. Will this affect my career in the long run if faith-based organisations aren't my thing? Do you recommend I'd go for national NGOs instead?
+Kirollos Fares Thanks for the interesting question. The main thing is that you're getting experience and gaining skills and competencies (I don't think that it matters whether or not you're working in a faith based organisation or not). While working in the field you'll develop a network of colleagues from across a broad range of organisations. With time those contacts will be invaluable in terms of identifying additional career opportunities. Good luck!
Hi Stelio - thanks very much for the comment. So to make the videos I usually just use the camera built into my laptop and create the graphics on my iPad or on the laptop itself. I edit it all together with Final Cut Pro (Apple software). Hope that helps. Greg
Dear Dr. Martin! Thank you very much for this video, so far it's one of the few useful guides I encountered during my job search. I have a question for you if you would not mind. I'm an MA in Political Science student about to graduate (from CEU, Budapest, Hungary), but I am highly interested in Public Health and wrote my MA thesis on introduction of mandatory social health insurance in Switzerland, Israel and South Korea. I'm planning to apply for an MS in Public Health, but prior to that I would like to get some work experience, so could you tell me what could my options be? Best, Ivan.
Thanks for the question Ivan Polynin - I'm glad to see people like yourself (with a political science background) getting involved with public health (you'll add a lot of value). In terms of getting some experience, one option might be to do an internship with either a UN agency (like the WHO or UNICEF) or a large NGO like CHAI. Getting some experience before doing your MPH is a great idea and you'll get a lot more out of the programme. Good luck!
Hi Dr Greg, I really love your videos. Please keep up the good work. I would very much love to have a chat with you concerning my career path. I have a masters in public health from the United Kingdom and a bachelors degree in microbiology from Nigeria. I was wondering if there is a platform through which i could book a session with you.
Oluwadami Oyelade - i used to use a google platform to connect with people like yourself for this sort of thing (but that's not available in the EU anymore). I'll see what I can do about setting up a "hangout" on G+ sometime to address questions. We'll advertise it at www.twigh.org
Thank you for this video. I am looking to start a career in global health. This presentation is easy to follow, outlines great tips and very resourceful! What advice do you have for someone that is coming from a science background (without a MPH) and wants to get started with a Global Health career? I want to go back to graduate school. Would you suggest a PhD or a DrPH if I want to do vaccine research at a global health organization?
Greg, GREAT video! I have shared it with my Management in Global Health class at Emory University (Atlanta, GA). What software program did you use to create the video? I really like the live view of you with the "chalk board" behind. I look forward to our crossing paths someday. Best, Dirk Schroeder Dirk G. Schroeder, ScD, MPH Chief Health Officer & Exec VP | HolaDoctor Inc Associate Professor of Global Health | Emory University Founder & President | Press 2 Health Equity Advisors
Thanks for the comment Dirk much appreciated. And thanks for sharing the video. My plan is to make a few more on "careers in global health"... will let you know. Greg
Hi, great Jobs with your videos, I must say I really do enjoy them. I am an M.D with about 3 years clinical experience, I have also completed an MSc in Health Systems and Public Policy last September. I have an interest in health systems/policy, health financing and social determinants of health. I am writing because I have tried everything possible at securing a job since I completed my dissertation including independent consultations, internships with no success. I would really appreciate your advice on what steps to take to increase my chance of employability in my interested field. thank you.
+Hirra thanks for the question. It's not an easy thing to address in just a few lines. I will say this though, network like crazy. Get into LinkedIn and reach out to people working in organisations that you're interested in. Ask them for advice. Start little side projects with them. Invite them to coauthor a paper with you etc. It might take time but will pay off.
Do you guys know other platforms useful for people in the GH field? I love Greg´s videos and I am looking for more websties/videos/platfoms. A nice one I can share is "The Global Health Reporter", a Facebook group. Would love to hear others.
Vijoleta Gordeljevic thanks for the comment - I'll take a look at the Global Health Reporter Facebook group (sounds interesting). Globalhealthhub.org is a great resource that you might find useful. We also have our own webpage which we are trying to make useful www.twigh.org
Hi Greg Thank you so much for the vids. Very well put together and really comprehensive. I am a pharmacist currently considering applying for a masters in global health. Would you recommend taking some time to do an internship or volunteer work before pursing a career in this field?
Tola Olaleye great question. If you are able to get some experience before you do your masters it will help you get more out of the programme. Good luck!
Dear Dr. Greg Martin, I am public health scholar and student at Columbia University. Can you please make a video regarding funding sources (Scholarships/Fellowships) for student interested in doing work in the global health space. Thank you!
Thanks for the suggestion Stephane Labossiere - absolutely - I'll do that with pleasure. I think that you are right - there is a lack of good clear information about what is out there in terms of scholarships and fellowships for students interested in global health. Keep in touch...
Dear Dr. Greg, Thank you for this. I found it to really helpful to frame my approach to seeking opportunities in global health. I am a psychologist on faculty at University of California, San Francisco. My area of clinical focus has been in the assessment and treatment of trauma with children and youth. Any ideas of specific organizations who are involved with mental health initiatives on a global scale? thank you for your time
Elidambh - that's a great question. There are many organisations that work specifically in areas and with people in "complex emergencies" like the ICRC and MSF. They would find someone like you particularly useful I imagine.
Hi Greg, I am doing a masters in biotechnology and had the opportunity to work for PATH as a research fellow over the summer.I have really now taken a keen interest in global health and wanted to ask you about some skills that i need to succeed in this environment. Thank you
That's a great question, Jonathan. You'll find that your background in biotech stands you in good stead. The skill set that I think is extremely important in public health and global health is an understanding of epidemiology (I have a video that provides the basics but you might want to do a short course or get a book). Good luck.
Thank you for your quick response. I wanted to find out, do you have any recommendations for a book or a short course that could help me. Thank you for your time
I am Nigerian by Nationality and i am about to finish medical university in ukraine.I intend to go into Global health .What are the necessary steps Needed to be taken if i intend to work for world bank or World health organisation. What can boost my Cv as an amatuer in the field.
Great question Bodinga Boyiga - there are two things that you need to make yourself an attractive candidate to the WB or WHO: 1) some experience and 2) a masters degree. The masters degree doesn't have to be an MPH (could could do a masters in epidemiology, health economics, policy etc.). Good luck!
Hello Greg, I would like to thank you for an excellent presentation. It was immensely useful. However, I would like to also know about some public health advice centers/agencies that can come handy if I need to seek advice. If I am not asking too much, is it possible to contact you for any future advice? Kindly let me know. You are doing a very good work, as many MPH graduates including me are clueless as to how to make most of our knowledge and experience. With Kind regards, Dr. Harshavardhan
Awesome video! very helpful! As a student who just recently completed an undergraduate in public health how can i break into the global health or public health sector before applying for an MPH since many MPH programs now want some form of experience?
Bahja Ibrahim thanks for the question. At this point it might be an idea to do an internship or do some volunteer work to get a little experience. It doesn't pay well but in the long run will be well worth while. Good luck.
Thanks for the informative video. I have a few questions related to this topic, I'm a recent graduate from an undergrad in sciences and working at a federal health organization as a biologist. However, I'm looking to pursue a masters in public health, as I feel the work is more meaningful and fulfilling. My only concern is that I do not posses the requirements (as in educational requirements) to be a useful graduate from an MPH program. I'm not sure if that's completely true, but would you be able to clarify this in any way? And what I mean by requirements is that I feel like a person with an MD would be more useful to be in this sort of field rather than someone with a science background.. if that makes sense.
+Eblock01 Thanks for the question. Trust me, you will absolutely be able to make a meaningful contribution with your background and with an MPH. You don't need an MD at all. In fact, the more diversity we can bring into public health the better. Good luck!
hey m a ayush doctor i.e I have done my graduation in Bhms(bachelor of homoeopathic medicine &surgery) & planning to do MPH in future.. I have heard that WHO does not hire homoeopaths rather MBBS! is it??
Dr Martin, thank you for your informative video, I have a question about the Master programmes which I have applied for. and my question is; Is there any difference between MSc Health Management and MSc Health care Management? and if they are different Master programmes, which one is better in terms of their job prospects. thank you.
Thanks for the question jahed345 - actually I don't think that there is a difference (well, certainly not that I know of). Are these two programs being offered by different universities (in which case I guess they are referring to the same sort of thing)? You might be able to look a the curriculum of the programs online (which will help). good luck
hello Dr Greg, ive just finished medicine and i really wanted to have a career in Global Health. I've shortlisted few universities in uk and europe to pursue masters in Global Health. My question is does getting masters from a particular university improves your chances of getting a job in Global health? And is it the same as International Health?
pops praharsha - thanks for the question. There certainly are some schools that are better than other and schools that have excellent "reputations" (which is sometimes useful). That said, choosing a school is a function of many variables (what you can afford, where you live, what you're interested in, etc.) At the end of the day, provided you work hard, network like crazy and keep interested in public health, you'll find your way... Good luck!
Hi Dr. Greg Martin! Thank you for this very helpful video about careers in Global Health. I am also an MD (in a developing country) that specialised in Paediatrics and I just finished my MPH degree. This video is really inspiring because it gave me an idea what to do. I have been submitting my CV to WHO and UNICEF, but am still waiting. Can you further explain the role of independent consultants and how do to get that positions? Thank you Dr. Greg, I will appreciate it so much if you give me some advise.
Hi there Lorilee - thanks for the comment. I've created a video on consulting work in global health that you might find useful: ua-cam.com/video/1pkMEHurasc/v-deo.html
Hello Dr! first, thank so much for the video. It gave me a big push towards my plans and projects. So, Thank you for the inspiration. I have been trying to reach you to ask you, I'm not sure this youtube is a good area to ask but I'll try. I'm a Pulmonology fellow trying to get into MPH. My big plan is to specialize in Lung disease ( esp Asthma), pollution/smoking and renewable energy. I'm not sure if MPH will be a good start but I think my passion goes around this triad. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the message - great to learn about your interest in lung disease, pollution and renewable energy - wow - a fascinating triad. The short answer to your question is YES - an MPH is an excellent stepping stone for getting skills in the area of epidemiology, policy etc. that you'll find extremely useful as you continue this work. It will also give you an excellent opportunity to learn about what's already happening in this field and to network with the appropriate professionals. Good luck!!
Thanks for that informative video. I did my master in physiotherapy (neurological disorders) and have been working as the physiotherapist and the manager in a NGO since last 5 years, but i also got the interest in pursueing the MPH. Also sum1 suggested me about Msc in International health. I am bit confused, which one would be better to pursue. I am from india. Regards.
Hi Stanzin - the truth is that either would be good. You'll learn a general set of skills that you'll be able to apply in multiple situations. Good luck
i have started with my MPH from Germany, so from the job perspective what are the things that i should consider most, would it be possible to apply for a job in WHO soon after finishing my MPH, and what are the procedures. last but not the least, basically i am from india, should i think of doing my master thesis from India or Germany itself.
Hi Stanzin - it really depends on what it is that you want to do once you've graduated. Both an MPH and an MSc International Health will stand you in good stead re jobs in the global health space. My advice would be to study subject matter that you're interested in.. Hope this helps. Greg
+1234 5678 Thanks for the question. MSc in 'international' or 'global' health typically focusses on issues that are global in nature (and usually focus on developing and poor countries - but not exclusively). An MSc in public health will be more general and focus on the skills you need to add value at a national or global level. I'm not sure that one is better than the other. It depends a little on what you're interested in doing once you graduate.
+Global Health with Greg Martin thankyou for your reply that was fast :) i will be joining uppsala for msc international health am a RN in EU. i hope i will manage the course.
Thanks Hamish - I've just taken a look and it looks like a fantastic resource. For those of you wanting to go to the webpage, GlobalHealthGateway is all one word in the URL.
Hi Greg. Thank you for the video its great. I am a medical doctor at Tembisa Hospital in South Africa. I'd like to do my post grad in either public health or global health and am very unsure of which to chose. I want to work worldwide and for global organisations, but also have the option of working in South Africa as well. What would you recommend?
I am a Psychology Major (neuroscience concentration)/ premedical track and I have always been interested in wanting to get a minor in international relations due to the fact that I have always been interested in Global Health. I want to become a Nuero-pathologist and I was wondering where does neuroscience fit in all of this? Lastly, I want to thank you for posting such an informative video.
Hi Emily Perez - interestingly, mental illness is one of the biggest contributors to the global burden of disease. There is a lot of work to be done in this area and a desperate need for people with an interest in both mental health and global health.
Hello Dr. Martin, Thank you for the really helpful video. I have extensive lab work experience working with infectious pathogens and I am also completing an MPH in Epidemiology. What are examples of organizations would you say would be a good fit for me?
hi Snooplion86 As a starting point, I would look at DNDi (they are a very interesting organisation doing fantastic work). You could also look at the TB Alliance and other disease specific organisations. If you want to book some time to chat to me about this directly, you can schedule a slot here: helpouts.google.com/102747256038799395194/ls/803ce2088ac8e53e
I'm finishing my residency in internal medicine in the US. I did medical school in India. Is an MPH a necessity for a carreer in global health ? Thanks
hi chaand ohri - the short answer is no, you don't have to have an MPH to get involved with global health (although it does help and for some jobs it may be a requirement). The most important thing is to identify an area that you are able to add value. I know lots of people working in global health who are not MPH graduates.
Hi Dr. greg, I have seen your all videos regarding carrier opportunity in WHO, I have specially concern with Vaccine coordination program, I am having working Experience of vaccine Research and Development, Prequalification and commercialization of vaccine through WHO across the world. And Supply cold management of vaccine through UNICEF and PAHO. having an experience of AEFI and Quality concern of vaccine and Biologicals. So How can apply to the WHO vacancies specially for the Asian pacific Region and rest all.
Hi Atul - if you go to the WHO webpage and take a look at positions that are currently being advertised you might find something that is along the lines that you're looking for. You may need to back to the page periodically before you find exactly want you want. In the interim, I would try to find someone work for the WHO in that area and offer to do consulting work for them.
Love the video! So glad I found it! I am an MPH student and my main concern is finding a job considering my background is in business (mostly financial aid in secondary education). My undergrad is in business management. My dream job is in maternal and child health in global health. My kids are older now and this is my chance to live my dream! Do I have any chance of finding a job? What would be your advice for me? Do I have a really tough road ahead? Thank you for your thoughts!
Hi Karen - sorry about the delay in getting back to you . The fact that you have a business background is excellent. You will bring a lot to to the table. There is lots of work in the maternal and child health space. UNICEF is a good place to start. I can't list them all here but I'll be coming out with a book soon that gives an overview of the landscape. Good luck!

Just a quick note: I'm now providing a service whereby people can book time with me via Google Helpouts if you're wanting to get career advice etc. Here is the link bit.ly/GH_career
Global Health with Greg Martin Do you still offer this service? Thanks!
Tricia Aung thanks for asking - actually, no, Google have discontinued the facility here in Ireland sadly so I can't provide the service.
+Tricia Aung hello
Do you provide independent consulting on career options for individuals interested in Global Health?
Thanks for the comment Chelsea - much appreciated. Good luck with your studying.
Love the manner you use to talk about this. There is no man behind the curtain here, there is no "if you're academically inclined", just "if you want to do this, work hard in this". And I love that, I feel like it's a message lost these days. Really good information as well, can't wait to delve into your other videos.
Thanks Kylee Derpsalot - much appreciated. Please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions or thoughts re future content on my channel.
Thanks for the comment Dr Prasad. I'll certainly be making more videos - thanks for the support.
As an undergrad aspiring to work in the Global Health field, this video and channel is proving to be a great resource. Thank you!
Thanks Greg. It's great to find support as I begin a career in the Public Health. Do keep it coming!
+Rinu Sarah will do... good luck with your career in public health!
Very good point Suliman - thanks for the comment.
Dr. Martin,
Thank you for posting this informative video.
I want to be a member of world health organization what is the procedure
I am serving life insurance Health insurances from last 26 years
It's a great question Haidar - I think that the trick is to get a sense of what aspects of global health most interest you (as a first step). Happy to chat more though.
Thankyou for that video. I will be starting a MPH this year. It made me excited (and nervous) about my career prospects.
Hi Tess Bright well I'm glad to hear that you're excited (and don't worry about being nervous - its natural). There are definitely some exciting career prospects in global health / public health - good luck!
Dear Dr. Greg,
I am enjoying watching your youtube videos.
Best,
Fadjar Wibowo
Hi Dr. Greg, just wanna say thank for this informative video. I just applied to a Master of Public Health in Hong Kong and your video had given me a very good idea of what Public Health involves and what skills sets will be required from me.
Thanks again!
Good luck with your Masters in Public Health degree Cindy Lam - let me know how it goes! What are you wanting to do after your degree?
Thinking of moving into consultancy...and WHO ultimately...not sure yet. Will see how it goes..btw just wanna say another thank you for the working at WHO video! You are a genius
Totally agree... a DrPH is an excellent option!
I am delighted with your presentations.
Thanks for the lovely comment Klement Jaidzeka - good luck!! Keep in touch.
Thank you for such a helpful video Dr Martin! It is fantastic guide for students in the maze of public health
You are most welcome Dr Prasad - glad you liked it.
Thanks for making and sharing this video Greg - all helpful pointers that I will be sharing with my networks
Excellent video. Very informative and I enjoyed the graphics! Also, do not forget about the DrPH in terms of practice-based professional public health degrees!
Thank you for the insightful video..... helpful for aspiring public health students :) Looking forward for more videos dealing with a specific topic
Doing a presentation on Public health. love your material.
gborowme bangura glad you enjoyed it!! :)
Global Health with Greg Martin Thank you. Will do.
Very helpful and informative! As someone who got my BSc in Nutrition and is trying to become involved in Global Health, my question is about how to get the right experience to apply for my MPH and what more I can do to find jobs that are relevant to global health.
Excellent overview. Thanks so much for providing it.
You're most welcome
Blesssss! Grateful I found your videos!
Thans for the comment - glad you liked the video!
Thanks Inder!
This was so helpful to guide me as I've just finished my MSc in Public Health! Thanks Greg. I would really like to chat with you personally if possible.
Is public health a really good course?? I actually wanted to go into nursing but I am now studying public health
Hey there Dr. Martin,
In the swamps of graduating with my bachelors and diving into the global health realm, thanks for the video!
Thank you Dr Martin. This is a very informative video.
Glad I could help Chekaraou!
Global Health with Greg Martin
Can a microbiologist purse a career in public health
Thank you so much Dr. Greg! I am MD and I wanted to study global health but its was difficult to summarise what can I do and how can I start!
Hi Oscar Flores - thanks for the comment - good luck in your search! Greg
Thanks, for the lecture. it helped me lot in understanding structure
+Navjot Singh glad you liked it.
Thanks
thanks doctor nice orientation
Good information in a nutshell. Thanks.
Nice and useful video. I wonder what are the paths for someone who has an M.S. in Global Studies with Concentration in Global Health ?
Great video Greg !
Good luck!
wonderful video :). thanks for sharing your knowledge
DrAnthony Wallace CCMA BSc MA ND thanks for the comment
Hi Dr I'm currently doing BBA and i wanted to ask that can i get a job after doing masters in this field??
what a great video!!!! Thank you for all!!
Sorry for the repeat questions, but I wanted to ask in a new thread if you, or anyone you know provide career consults in the field of public health. Specifically, I'm interested in the field of maternal and child health. Thank you!
Hi Molly - sorry about the delay in getting back to you. Get in touch with me via www.twigh.org (use the contact us form) and we can set something up.
Good luck!
Thank you for the video! the helpout seems to be inactive now
Hi there - yes - helpout isn't available in Ireland anymore (sadly).
Hi Greg, I really like your presentation and communications skills in the video. A curious question, how do you make your very engaging videos?
Best,
Ivan.
Good luck!
hello dr
ok pleas contect me when you went imployer
Hi Dr Greg,
I really love your videos.
This was so helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you :)
Wow, awesome video.
Thanks ReeAmor - glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback.
Greg,
GREAT video! I have shared it with my Management in Global Health class at Emory University (Atlanta, GA).
What software program did you use to create the video? I really like the live view of you with the "chalk board" behind.
I look forward to our crossing paths someday.
Best,
Dirk Schroeder

Thanks for the comment Dirk much appreciated. And thanks for sharing the video. My plan is to make a few more on "careers in global health"... will let you know. Greg
Thank you Greg
It might take time but will pay off.
great advice. Thanks
Hi Greg
Thank you so much for the vids.
Good luck!
Did you apply for the program?
Global Health with Greg Martin Looking forward to this video!
They would find someone like you particularly useful I imagine.
hi greg. thanks a ton..real food for thought and guidance to young pubic health professionals like me...
You are most welcome! :)
Thanks!
You're most welcome
only i can say thank you for this zooming .
Most welcome stevenson xavier
Hi Greg,
I am doing a masters in biotechnology and had the opportunity to work for PATH as a research fellow over the summer.I have really now taken a keen interest in global health and wanted to ask you about some skills that i need to succeed in this environment. Thank you
That's a great question, Jonathan.
Thank you for your time
Great! Very inspiring.
Good luck!
Hello Greg,
I would like to thank you for an excellent presentation.
With Kind regards,
Dr.
You're so helpful Dr. Greg, thank you so much! From now on, I will frequently visit your page. Indeed, I'm now a fan.
:) glad to hear it!
Hello Dr! first, thank so much for the video.
Good luck!!
Global Health with Greg Martin Thank you! you are such an inspirational character!
very kind comment - thanks.
I am finishing RN school (BSN) and was wondering if there are RN positions available in the Public Health sector?
+Lucy Swats yes - there are lots of RNs working in public heath - please do get involved !! :)
Good luck
Thanks
i have started with my MPH from Germany, so from the job perspective what are the things that i should consider most, would it be possible to apply for a job in WHO soon after finishing my MPH, and what are the procedures.
last but not the least, basically i am from india, should i think of doing my master thesis from India or Germany itself.
Hi Stanzin - it really depends on what it is that you want to do once you've graduated. Both an MPH and an MSc International Health will stand you in good stead re jobs in the global health space. My advice would be to study subject matter that you're interested in.. Hope this helps. Greg
Great video! would you please differentiate between Ms in Public health and Ms in international health. which one is better?
+1234 5678 Thanks for the question. MSc in 'international' or 'global' health typically focusses on issues that are global in nature (and usually focus on developing and poor countries - but not exclusively). An MSc in public health will be more general and focus on the skills you need to add value at a national or global level. I'm not sure that one is better than the other. It depends a little on what you're interested in doing once you graduate.

+Global Health with Greg Martin thankyou! :) why some masters in PHN/Global health take 1 year and in some universities takes 2 years?
Thanks Hamish - I've just taken a look and it looks like a fantastic resource. For those of you wanting to go to the webpage, GlobalHealthGateway is all one word in the URL.
Hi Greg. Thank you for the video its great.
I am a medical doctor at Tembisa Hospital in South Africa. I'd like to do my post grad in either public health or global health and am very unsure of which to chose. I want to work worldwide and for global organisations, but also have the option of working in South Africa as well. What would you recommend?
thanks for inspiring me...
WOW - what a lovely comment. Am glad that I could help! Good luck! :)
This honestly made my day and gives me more drive to pursue my career.
Hello Dr. Martin,
Thank you for the really helpful video.
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Hello.
I have done bds from India now I also want to do job in who so sir please guide me what study further should i do either MPH or MBA.
I am doing a bachelor's degree in economics and finance, do I stand a chance to work in global health?
Hi Dr. greg, I have seen your all videos regarding carrier opportunity in WHO, I have specially concern with Vaccine coordination program, I am having working Experience of vaccine Research and Development, Prequalification and commercialization of vaccine through WHO across the world.
Good luck!
