- originally i done this 12 years ago and it was good to get back to see the old girl as her days left on the Mersey are pretty much numbered
so much history i bet on this and stories as we say goodbye to another part of Liverpool's port history
unfortunately Eric couldn't get down but we will try again as i wasn't him to see this...
not much in terms of exploration purely the history behind this is what matters......

When I was serving in the Royal Navy I was based at the old HMS Eaglet at Princes Dock in the early 80s. I used to walk from the Pier Head to Eaglet every day. All the old buildings have been demolished. I remember walking through what I believe was the old railway station when it was raining. Happy days.

When I was a young lad in the late 1970s my best mate's dad worked for the MDHC working the dock gates from the river into the Princes half tide dock when the "Irish boats" used to sail from Princes dock. The lockgate men had a little brick hut not 100 yards from where you were filming, next to where the riverside station branchline used to cross the gate between the Princes dock and the half tide dock.
On a few occasions (usually on a sunday when it was quieter) we would go down to the brick hut and be taken inside for mugs of steaming hot tea and bacon butties sitting in a fug of tobacco smoke, oil and diesel fumes with the rowdy team of lock gatesmen. They were REAL salt of the earth characters, they were "full on" and as a little lad they probably frightened me a bit, but they were REALLY sound fellers, the sort who would sit on the back seat of the 14 bus on a friday night singing "Nellie Dean" and "playing the spoons". Then his dad would take us across to the Princes dock and we'd climb down a quayside ladder into one of the men's "gig boats" (a little old ramshackle wooden boat with a small outboard motor), and he would take us for a tour of the northern docks. He used to take us onboard any ships that were tied up (I remember sitting in a German grain ship's mess room in East Trafalgar dock drinking German coffee and listening to my mates dad talking "pidgin German" with the crew (He'd spent 4 years in a German POW camp). I remember chugging around Stanley Dock on a summer's day with the warehouse like a cliff wall towering over the dock... you couldn't hear the traffic on the dock road, only the screams of the seagulls circling high around the roof of the warehouse.
We also went for a "look around" on the "S.S Landfall" when it was sited at Collingwood dock. (The "landfall" was a WW2 tank landing craft (LCT 7074) that was in action at Normandy on D-Day, after the war it was bought by the "Mersey Master Mariner's club" and became a famous floating night club during the 1950-70s).
By the time we went on it it was in a really delapidated state, and was destined for the breakers yard BUT in 1994 the Historic Warship Preservation Society in Birkenhead bought it, but then went bankrupt, but the "landfall" was eventually fully restored by the lottery heritage fund and is now in Portsmouth RN museum. ua-cam.com/video/izB-t7gy1KA/v-deo.html
We also used to go into the big wooden sheds that used to be on the other side of Princes parade from the landing stage you were filming here. Those sheds were actually the Riverside railway station which connected the national railway network to the passnger ships on the Mersey. When we used to go "urban exploring" the old station in the late 70s there was still LOADS of old fittings and signage in there and it was a REALLY atmospheric place... All these years later I now realise that MILLIONS of people passed through there, going from the "Old World" of Europe to the "New World" of the US, and during two world wars all the GI's who came from the "New World" back to Europe again passed though that station in the other direction... WHAT a history, and now sadly all gone and left like a shithole wasteground... No wonder the UN removed the "world heritage" status from the Pier head.
Sadly after doing my family tree over the last few years I discovered that my great grandfather and a great uncle BOTH drowned in Princes dock in seperate incidents.... one in 1913 the other in 1953.
But anyway, thanks for the great vid lads, brings it all back to me.

It's such a shame that the old floating part of the landing stage has long gone. I remember the original Mersey ferry floating landing stage where we went down the gangway bridge which went up and down with the tide on big massive hinges at the top and wheels under the bottom of the gangway bridge that used to move with the tide and waves. It sank during as storm and was demolished soon after. They then built the new ferry terminal.

My dad used to work on the Princess dock, he used to take me to work some weekends. I remember walking all around here when the sea was dead calm and it was sunny. The smell of the river and the heat, good memories. Thanks lads for capturing this before it’s gone. Really interested in that bricked up tunnel though. 👍
Im gutted i never explored this place and princes dock earlier when i was a kid i always ended up by stanley dock end and when i started exploring properly and documentimg things back in 2008 i heades back to stanley dock and the place hadnt changed lol

I used to work in one of the office buildings opposite the liner terminal and watched it being built... spoke to a few of the workers about the wooden jetty and they reckon it was a listed building and couldn't be touched.
Would like to see you document it being demolished, be interesting.

Great video as always, Eric always has a smile on his face, great to see you doing well mate, this explore brings back some good memories for me as I worked all these docks as a diver for the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board, so much history disappearing but I also understand they have make way for new development and growth but its great you captured it on video for future generations to be able to watch on UA-cam, fantastic !!!!

I can't remember how many times we got pulled by the plod for being down there in the late 80s/early 90s. We used to dare each other to get as close to the water as possible and one mate lost both of his shoes when he panicked because of the size of the woodlice down there.
Back then the remnants of a waiting room were still there, with a few original Guinness tin signs and loads of crockery and some Burco tea urns.
Me dad said that the cattle would often stampede when they came out of the tunnel and once or twice there'd be bulls legging it round town for a few hours. I'm not sure if he was blagging, but he reckoned that they'd be led up to the abattoir (abba-tire) in Stanley by fellas off the boats, along the streets.
About 10 years ago or so, we had an office at Princes Dock. I seem to remember that it was almost always windy.

Back in the mid 80's I worked for an animal feed Company on the West Trafalgar Dock. I had the pleasure of jumping off the number 10 bus at the pier head and walking along the Quay side of the Princess warehouses which were derelict at the time, cut across the Princes half tide which at the time was filled in with rubble but housed HMS Eaglet. You could see the old Jetty even then and that was over 30 years ago circa 1989 was in bad shape and stretched out a good way towards the river. I'm surprised it still survives today. From there I would pass the Waterloo Dock and straight over towards the west Trafalager. Such a shame the warehouses were demolished, and 2 Bascule bridges, one near the Clarence Dock and the other crossing over towards the Waterloo Warehouse. I loved investigating the area, so much history.

You have balls of steel I was a nervous wreck watching that, thanks though it’s great to see a part of the docks not seen before, I would be terrified just looking at it from the other side of the railing in person, old man made structures freak me out and I am still terrified of the dark tunnel that no one drives down. It’s linked with me being terrified of what’s at the end of it, with it being the Mersey tunnel ( ever since I was tiny and driving through) This video I really appreciate it, you made me fear for your life 😂My toes are still curled and I was freaking out but obviously watched till the end because you wouldn’t have posted if you came to harm.No joke though I am grateful for the chance to see that, I do wonder though, would you ever consider going down the unused tunnel to the end of it( if there’s a safe way to do so) it would make for perfect ongoing content that links with your daredevil antics 🫤. Thanks again for what you did it’s the only way the rest of us would see it in ‘real time’ 👌xx
Things like that scare me. Large unstable structures especially next to rivers just give me the Willie's. Remember seeing a tv drama when I was a kid where there srr kids playing in a tin bath on the river, the current whipped them past a big wooden jetty just like this then sucked the under never to be seen again. Another thing that scared me was the gap in the mersey ferry where the crew lash the ropes, used to think imagine slipping on the wet deck and sliding through there😱
Boss video thanks for the upload me and my mates were there in the late 80's and those rickety timbers on the lower deck were covered in oil and hearing those waves crashing beneath sketchy and shady big time..

I live in the tall building and if the daytime conceirge man was on he would've stopped youz! 😅 So interesting though to see what it's like under there! I love the history of our city. I thought yous would of fallen in as the wood looks rotten

Sailed from princes dock all our lives into Belfast. The massive wall and massive lock bringing you up or down bringing you up to sea level was scary to us kids but we always focused on the liver birds.

at 6.40 thats a lock gate which when opened leads to l6 canal closed along timew ago befor 1978 you can contact british waterways and thay will give you the plans. For a price :( great video also my apartment looks great on video lol. keep it up great work

Hi George I always love watching your videos. Good to see Eric well again!! You too get where water couldnt!! The intrepid explorers. I remember walking down the bridge there, it bounced when everyone walked. Many happy days going to The Isle of Man . I loved it even day trips from that dock. Cilla Black and her Mum were on board once’s going to perform in The Isle of Man. I was a kid with the school going for a holiday, but it was a terrible crossing as the Irish Sea can be, There was a hold with communal bunk beds and we were all hanging over our bunk being seasick including Cilla and her Mum. Keep recording things for posterity. I was told there were tunnels going under the old Coopers Emporium down to the river and some had really old items in there I knew a builder who worked down there in the 70,s.

Wow I'm Steve ! How strange I was thinking of this place not so long ago... through the summer of 1990 many times I would leave the Curzon Club end up down there with married Bi guys I would pick up for a bit of one two buckle my shoe! The buzz was amazing! I always remember one fella I met at the old tunnel bus stop shiting himself and done a runner when we got there !(it might of been me lol )I was 23 yo ... I thought that would of well gone by know thanks!

It would be good if you could get some of those metal posts before they demolish it, they'd be great features in your garden...when they start dismantling it you should go down there and ask them.
They would do mate some history in them things be nice to maybe restore them

@@g2emedia1977 The cruise libner terminal will sit where the landing stage is - there's also plan for a cruise liner hotel on the land just over the road from the jetty. I was wondering whether the bricked up tunnel would have been access to/from the old Riverside station?

I stood on the end of this (with a few other people who were in the know) when the QEII vistied in the late 80's whenever it was? The night it was due to sail.
A surreal moment, when thousands and thousands of people full of 'our' 80's experiace of life came to watch from both sides of the river - a spaceship from another world full of people with a totally differant experiance of life, in a real life version of Encounters of the Third Kind.
We looked at them in the middle of the river.
And I guess they looked at us.
And after it had blown its horn and gone I walked away, silently cussing to myself.
I was glad that it had come.
But angry that it (they) had all gone years ago.
And thinking to myself "Who needs you" !!!
It was only 2 or 3 years later I was delivering a PA to a Hotel in sight of the very place where I had done that cussing on my walk back, for the wife of John Lennon.
Sometime later on my next visit down that river front road I wondered where all the dock sheds had gone that had had the Large Objects Museum in and also the Riverside Railway Station.
But I never put these two events together (the start of the destruction of Liverpool and its world history) until recently when I watched a video of that John Lennon Memorial Concert.
When I was about 19 or 20 (1982) I took a photo through the open door of the waiting room (now also gone) that was opposite the Riverside Station, with dockers in it from Princes Dock I presume, playing Pool on the tables that were in there as their recreation room.
This was when I was on a Photographic Course at the Open Eye. So they will still have the negatives. If anyone knows where they are ? As the Open Eye doesn't seem to know !

And videos by Liverpool Band the Onset for veiws of the inside of the waiting room.

As was Crash Rehearsal Studios who owned and ran that PA that gave that wife a voice that day that started that whole destruction off that continues to the present

Just a little bit of dodge on part of the top deck.
That rail line was for Riverside Station from Waterloo Tunnel (the longest under the city) the disembarking point.
Those platforms along the river wall are were the waiting rooms where all still there until 1990

There were wooden chocks holding the whole thing in place. Well we started kicking the chocks. Nothing happened, so we moved away. Must have only been 30 seconds or so, and the noise was deafening. All the oil drums just started falling into the dock. We sh** ourselves running for our lives

You kind of make yourselves look more on top tbh, hanging around with backpacks and peering in windows. If you just got around the fence to look around the most people might do is wonder "what are those nutters doing on that deathtrap" and won't care, hanging around posh, sea view apartments and peering in windows is going to attract security guards, police and getting searched.
