Pulau Au and Perhentia are fantastic. I visited 30yrs ago when they were largely untouched, the water is so crystal clear. You thought water was blackish dirty near jetty, but it was actually because of too many fishes gathering there. Villagers just scoop up fishes for food.
There were huge fat grouper of 1~1.5m hiding below beautiful huge corals near the shores when snorkeling. Just swim out say 10 meters from the beach, no need boats or scuba diving equipment. Plenty of coral fishes, so you can chose which fish you like by putting the baited hook in front it. Didn't try the giant grouper, look too big to play with.
Plenty of mackerels (Dingiri?) of over 5kg size biting artificial baits when the boat is doing islands hopping.
Around artificial floats of coconut palm leaves structures fishermen left in middle of nowhere in a very deep valley, big shoals of beautiful sparkling emerald color Mahi Mahi of 10~15kg could be seen taking baits easily, giving incredible fight. Also Marlin of 2m size weighing some 50kg, not too big. Its unforgettable experience.

@@MakingWavesSG - Pretty much everything. 1st, use fins. 2nd, no one uses their hands and arms while snorkeling, your flailing legs and arms scare all the fish away. You should be lying almost motionless in the water, with your feet and legs moving very little (with fins) so you glide smoothly and quietly across the surface.
