The girls at the gas station are the ones who actually started the dance and challenge. The novelty of all of them just randomly exiting their car, being lit and vibing at the gas station is what made it so cool. Their dance moves and energy brought life to the meaning of this already popular song.
The song itself is genius because the composer took the line “John Vul’i gate” from a memorable scene and movie (Tsotsi) and used that line to mean that the urgency to open the gate is because there are some gorgeous huns (iStocko) at the gate. The ref is quite funny actually esp to South Africans. Also the reference *iStocko is borrowed from the word stock (as in investments) which connotes something of value.
Their fun, in-your-face sexy and cheeky attitude, as well as their energetic dance, and them vibing with one another kinda put all the different pieces together nicely. The men’s version of the challenge with them gesturing as if holding onto the ✨iStocko✨ adds to the genius and humour.
Collectively South Africans are just known for their music, dancing, fun loving energy and just overall lightheartedness and silliness, that’s why this dance blew up. It was easy to relate to the girls and join in their fun. Learning about the backstory made it even better for me. I Stan them huns, they seem like a fun bunch and congrats to them for the outcome from all this.
