There are Sadus in India with the same free growing locks , and it would be wrong to call them rastas just because they allow their hair to mat and grow freely like rastas . A rasta is someone that believes in the devinity of rastafari , or Haile Selassi , not just anyone with free growing matted hair .
There are sects in different parts of the world that wear their hair in dreadlocks , it is not only a rasta thing . Sadus in India has been wearing dreadlock for centuries , long before the existance of rastas . Now if people here see Sadus with their dreadlocks , they will call them rastas , when infact they are Hindu holy men , and should be called sadus , not rastas .
Rastas do not have a monopoly on matted hair or dreadlocks .
