Detailing 101 Ceramic Coating Application
Вставка

- The basics of applying a ceramic coating.
Application
-start with a clean and dry surface.
-wipe down with DIY Detail panel prep.
wearing gloves, in a well ventilated area, apply several drops to the applicator pad.
working in a circular motion apply the DIY Detail Ceramic Coating to a small area.
-allow to dwell 2-5 minutes ( dwell time is dependent on temperature and humidity).
-observe the surface, as the coating begins to cross link to the paint, the coating will transition from a liquid to what looks like an oil slick on water.
-when 50% of the surface turns back to clear, start leveling the coating with a Pearl weave microfibre towel
with a Pearl weave towel, lightly wipe the surface, if the towel is dragging, or is getting wet, wait 1 min more.
once the coating is leveled, use a plush towel to buff and remove high spots.

Thank you
Wait till you see how long the work time is. Very very long
men I just watched one of your product been examined after 4 months of application and it's still holding on. joeldetailing put your DIY interior ceramic to the test and it got 100%.kudos to you guys.keep the good work going
Thank you
Well, I applied the 5 year today to my VW Atlas Cross Sport. I washed, I decontaminated with the towel and iron remover, I polished, I panel prepped and finally I applied! The coating is so easy to apply. Easier than waxing. I put it on and I'd say in about a minute maybe 90 seconds I was leveling. I would say I used about 70% of the coating from the bottle on a pretty good size SUV. I'm hoping that's about right!
Entire process took me 7 hours to do but most of that was the prep. The coating took a little over an hour. Needing a ladder for the roof really takes time!
Can't wait to see it tomorrow in the daylight. It's in the garage for the night.
Thank you, please share your feedback on our facebook group ( and some pictures of course).

@@diydetailofficialI will be posting it shortly! It looks so good. The gloss of the 5 year is no joke and it's so slick microfiber towels just slide off the hood. I am very happy I took the time to do the prep correctly. There's nothing difficult about it but it is a bit tedious. It's a 2022 so the paint was in good shape but the gold standard and gold pad really made a difference. My plan is to use Ceramic Gloss as a top coat.
I'll be doing my Audi S5 and my wife's Mercedes GLC in the near future now that I realize how easy this is. I may break it down into two days but there's really nothing the average Joe can't do. Great product.
Fantastic lesson! Packed full of great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Never knew that and something I will be aware of when I switch over to ceramic coating.
You are so welcome!
Keep these videos coming, they are so good. Direct, to the point, like All Clean concentrate. Everything you need, nothing you don’t.
Thanks, will do!
Great start to the series
Thank you
Amazing video guys this is something I’ve been waiting for!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 like the way you demonstrated on how to coat.
Thank you
Biggest advice for newbies DO NOT OVER BUFF THE COATING. There is a reason we call it level the coating
Correct
Thanks great info on applying ceramic coating.
Glad it was helpful!
Just got the diy gold standard spray polish. I used a spta wool pad worked great. And just purchased the yellow foam pad and the purple wool pad
Thank you
@@diydetailofficial your welcome love the crazy long work time. This polish is so easy to remove. Unlike most who say they are then when you go to wipe off it’s hard to
That gloss is insane on that black paint. Couldn’t help but notice the minor ding on it though. Lol
Yes unfortunately the gloss makes it even more visible
That mirror finish is amazing. The fact that you can frame the video n reverse off the panel shows how well you prepped the car for the coating. That little dent pops out too! 🤫😢
Thank you, yes unfortunately the dent is even more visible once polished and coated
Appreciate the info style vid. Great shot of coating curing, high spot, etc. Do you have recommended temperature limits for application of coatings? Thanks
50f to 120f
Great information as always
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Another excellent video guys! A question re high spot removal. You said to apply a little extra coating if you notice a high spot - do you apply then wipe off straight away as you did in the video or should you wait a couple of minutes to rainbow then go clear?
Right away for high spots
Is there any advantage to doing multiple coats with any of these coatings?
Also a quick question on your rinseless. If I have already done my iron decon during the wash and want to clay with a TRC Ultra clay towel before polishing, does your rinseless provide enough lubrication on its own? Should I dilute 256:1 or 128:1?
No advantages to multiple layers. Yes the Rinseless wash will be perfect at 256/1 dilution.
What is the panel prep? If I finished compounding and polishing do I need an additional wash before ceramic. Thx, you guys are great
Panel prep is the final step before coating. It removes polishing oils and solvents. With The Gold Standard Polishing System no need to wash after.
Great video! Very informative and interesting explanation on applying the coating in circular motions, makes sense that it would increase the chances of high spots when applying in straight lines.
How often should you swap out the applicator pad and towels? I would imagine that the coating would eventually start to cure and harden, which could lead to marring if continued to be used?
Thanks😊
No need mid job to replace anything …your applicator and towels should be great for the whole job. If your leveling towel is getting wet it means you’re leveling too soon, give it a bit more time to flash before the initial wiping/leveling 👍
ready to rock and roll
Thank you
About to apply the 3 year but it’s going to be in the 40’s this week… probably 50s in the garage. Any worries with those temps? What’s too cold for application and curing? Thanks for answering all my newbie questions!!
Ideally above 50f
hello DIY Detail , hello Ivan , i am living in VietNam , in my country we using alot of motorbike , i am learning detailing for a several of time , can i ask you guys a question ? Can we apply a ceramic coating on the chassis and on the part aluminium on the engine ? thanks alot for your help if you can help me out . My english is not so good , i am sorry if i say somethings wrong . hope you answer my question . Love DIY Detail .
Your English is much better than my Vietnamese . Yes you can apply ceramic coating to all surfaces except seat and rubber.
Hello. Great video. I watched it with pleasure. I want to cover my car with ceramic coating this summer. But I don't have my own garage. I need ceramics that quickly adhere to the varnish. Can you recommend me a ceramic that can be applied outdoors?
Yes the DIY Detail ceramics can all be done outdoors
Great video as always, already have my DIY 3 year graphene and planning to do a paint enhancement and coating soon.
I have a couple questions, I see you have your towels folded into 4ths, do you typically use 1/4 of each towel per panel or can you use the same side for a few panels? Also, do you throw away the towel after the coating job or can we salvage the towel with rags to riches? Thanks in advanced! 🤙
Great question, one towel should suffice for the whole vehicle, change sides as you see fit. The reason it’s folded is to reduce pressure points. When done installing your coating soak your towels and applicator in your wash bucket to stop the cross linking of the coating, and pre-clean them.
@@diydetailofficial awesome! Waiting on my bottle of gold standard polish, gallon of ceramic gloss plus a few other things from the last sale. Really excited to get them and get to work!
Thank you
I also wondered about what to do with the towels afterwards.
You say you can reuse them if we put them in a bucket with water and then wash them.
Is this tip for your coating or for every ceramic coatings?
I use Gyeon Mohs EVO.
I know there are many opinions about this subject.
Terje
@@terjejacobsen2856
I think it's put towels in wash bucket (with whatever your soap was) that's what stops the crosslink process & why you don't wash for a few days.
Thanks for yet another great teaching resource! I'm looking to upgrade my car from Ceramic Gloss to one of your ceramic coatings but don't want to polish the car. Ceramic Gloss has been amazing and super durable, but I just have that itch to upgrade. Any chemicals or processes you would recommend for removing the Ceramic Gloss to prepare the surface for the coating?
Thank you, unfortunately a very light polish will be needed to scar the coating enough for the new coating to bond.
@@diydetailofficial thanks for the very clear response! Now I just need to weigh my options...
Awesome content as always. Question for ya, for panels on older vehicles with stone chips, like a hood for example. What is the best recommendation to approach those when applying your ceramic coating?
Thanks for the question, start with doing your touch ups, then 24 hours or more later apply the ceramic coating.
@@diydetailofficial awesome! thank you so much again for the informative content and for the response.
How do you wash the applicator, I’ve left in rinseless Wash, but how do I dry, air dry or another way?
Does it or matter if any marks present?
Thanks
Rinse well and air dry
Guys, will one bottle of the 5 year contain enough product to coat two, Audi Q5 size vehicles? Thanks.
Yes, if you’re careful not to over apply.
What makes a coating sweat vs rainbow when it flashes off? Are there different carrier solvents or does it have to do with makeup of the coating itself? Thanks guys!
It’s a combination of both. It’s primarily the carrier solvent that determines the difference, but some Ceramic components do not work with one or the other solvents.
can the towels be washed after ceramic coating and reused again?
Yes
Hello guys 👋🏽 , an off-topic question: does a glaze with polishing oils prolong the life of the paint and are they important to keep the beauty of the paint finish (Glossy / Wet look) , last question: can a paint coating applied to an SiO2 pre wax-glaze (like Maguires hybrid ceramic pre-wax) without the use of surface prep?
On old single stage paint, a glaze can be a good form of protection short term. Your best to apply a coating directly to paint without any form of wax.
Hi Yvan and Nick you mentioned when using a rotary with 5-6 inch pads it’s important to use lowest speed and no pressure. When using 1-3 inch pads does the technique need to change, such as increase in speed or pressure to produce consistent cut?
No, same principles apply
Any tips:tricks for tough areas such as door jambs, wheels etc…?
In what terms ( cleaning, decontaminating, or coating).
@@diydetailofficial coating plz. I’m in the middle of cleaning and doing a decon ona new Equinox RS in black metallic and going to put diy graphene ceramic 3yr on. Not sure how to get good coverage around emblems door jambs, wheels etc. thank you!
With the applicator you will easily get to all those areas.
@@diydetailofficial ok. Well good, seems like common sense. I’ve been detailing a long time (circa 1979), but I’m looking for efficiency and quality tips from others. Thanks guys!
Nice video! Curious though, how long is the curing time if your 3, 5 and 8 year coating? Thanks
1 hour before it can get wet.
@@diydetailofficial so 1 hr after application we can drive off in the rain? Im assuming 7-10 days also before it can be washed?
Great video!! Random question, but will 1 bottle be enough to coat a large car like a Ford Expedition? I own a 2020 Max and think I may need 2 bottles. Thank you!
One will be sufficient.
Love the car!
Thank you!
I have a question, is one bottle of ceramic coating enough for a big vehicle as Toyota Sequoia or Suburban? Thank you for your help
Yes, but be careful on application. Many first time users apply way too much.
@@diydetailofficial thanks this is so helpful
So I don't have circular applicator only some rectangle mini applicators, should I do crosshatch motion with rectangle?
Your choice circles or cross hatching
I got a new 2024 Chevy Camaro Panther collectors edition it has black metallic trim coat paint on it. I want to ceramic coat it, would you polish it first
Only if necessary.
Hello what does that green towel do exactly? And the other purple is that just normal microfiver towel to wipe the coat off?
The green is a low nap pearl weave to level the coating, the other is a fluffy towel as an insurance wipe.
Would u say some orher towel like that pearl nap because i cant order from you to sweden?
Question for you all: after opening, how long is unused coating good for? Most claim 3-6 months assuming dark and cool conditions. Curious if that goes for the 3, 5, and 8 year product as well.
6-12 months
Roughly 4-6 months
@@diydetailofficial Appreciate the support. Hope you all are having a great weekend.
All the DIY Ceramic Coatings, including the 5+3 and 8+3 stacks, work with APP, is that correct? So in theory you could DA Yellow Waffle with the Gold Standard polish and Rotary Jewel with APP?
Yes all coatings can benefit from C6 Ceramics Adhesion Promoter Polish (APP). Application of C6 Ceramics Adhesion Promoter Polish (APP) does require that you use a 3-9mm DA, not a rotary.
Hi,
If I have a freshly ceramic coated car, for example its been coated in the last few days, and I get bug guts from the highway,
should I attempt to remove them? Will they hurt the coating? A quick rinseless wipe down is safe?
Thanks
Rinseless is a great way to do that. Yes you want them off.
@@diydetailofficial I thought the car shouldn't be washed with any chemicals for at least a week?
A quick rinseless wipe down is this safe even on a fresh coating?
Obviously after 24 hours.
@@vincentiussnow765 Rinseless is safer than insects, but please resist the temptation to wash the whole car.
@@diydetailofficial Of course I won't wash it.
So this rinseless wipe won't degrade the coating performance in any way?
Thank you for the quick response by the way
You’re safe.
I got another question, for your systems should I get g15 polisher or stick to g9 as a begginner? I dont mind paying extra, and I heard in one of your vids that you teach to cut with 15 or more mm throw on da, Ik that your politicy is that you can do a good job with anything, but after my own car Ill start offering those services to my clients as well. So I basically want a good all around, maybe Ill steal my dads rotary and get a jeweling pad as well after some expirience.
Use a21 mm da is faster and finish with jeweling pas with the rotary
I want something less agressive, plus I heard that 21mm is best for boxy cars and very tough on curvy cars
Hello! I do not have access to a garage and since it is recommended to work in the shade. I do have a portion of my driveway that is shaded because of trees. No what should I do if a leaf or any debris falls on the paint as I am applying your or any ceramic coating?
Don’t stress, remove the leaf and keep moving
I applied ceramic coating yesterday and the car looks great but the paint is not smooth. I used Iron remover and a decon pad and the paint was smooth afterwards. I went over a small section today with a micorfiber and now that surface is smooth. Is it possible, I did not thoroughly buff off the ceramic coating? If so, is it OK go over the car now with a microfiber? My thought was it is like when you don't buff all of the wax and you can still buff it off, but it's just harder now.
Wait a week and wash it, please resist touching for a week
I live in Northern Ireland and tried this coating for the first time today, super slick but it was flashing and disappeared in around 45 seconds. Is this possible or am I being too cautious? 11 degrees here today.
Humidity accelerates the flash time
Haha - Nick was trying to say something at the end.
It’s possible
sir, for microfiber one dry and one damp?
More one leveling, one buffing. If the short nap towel gets wet, there’s a problem.
I'm more of a lazy cleaner that want to let the chemicals do most of the work for me. If I use all clean to pre soak all my problem areas every wash, I assume the 5 year coat will not last as long as if I used only incredible suds. However, does that just mean the only down side is that I have to just recoat it with more 5 year when it starts to fail? Meaning as long as I am ok with recoating it with more 5 year after it shows signs of failure, then I should safely be able to do my lazy washes?
DIY Detail All Clean won’t harm a coating. Use it as often as you wish.
Hi guy's, can you give me a example of a low nap towel for your leveling pls?
diydetail.com/products/korean-pearl-towel
is this for ALL ceramic coatings? I just bought the gyeon mohs and dont want to mess it up?! Thanks!!
Not all, refer to their instructions
So popo pearl weave towel when its about 50% clear to spread and then any plush towel to wipe it off right? That sounds like something even a beginner can do, and even if yoi do make a mistake its easily fixable right?
Correct
Hi Team,
How many hours after applying 5 years ceramic coating can I take it out for a spin ?
It’s ready for the elements after 1 hour 👍
What is dry Initial cure time before the 3 coatings can go out into the rain ? Thanks! Joel
1 hour
How long do these coatings need to cure before being exposed to rain and be washed?
1 hour for rain, 1 day for a Rinseless wash, 1 week for a soap wash.
@@diydetailofficial Thanks for the quick response!
Can I polish car mirrors, windows and windshield before ceramic coating it?
Yes!
What polish do you use before ceramic coating ?
DIY Detail Gold Standard Polish or C6 Ceramics Adhesion Promoter Polish (APP)
What coating should i use for plastic and glass?
DIY Detail, your choice of our 3, 5 , or 8
Can it be applied in high humidity environment?
Yes
this may be a silly question but can those towels be washed and re used or is it one and done after applying a coating?
Yes, they can be reused.
This is a bit tangential - I believe you said in another video that the applicators & wipe off cloths can be reused, if they are quickly put in a wash solution (e.g DIY Rinseless). You also stated that the reason this works is because of the surfactants preventing cross-linking. In the past, I remember you saying an ONR solution would also work. My question is: how can ONR work, since it is a polymer based product, with no(?) surfactants? Or does ONR still contain a small amount of surfactants? (I currently have a long way to go to finish my bottle of ONR - I use it very slowly, because I use it at the rinseless dilution, but using the "waterless" method. #rebel )
With Optimum Coatings it works, with other coatings it may or may not work because of the base resin used.
@diydetailofficial So are you saying that if, for ex., I use MOHS EVO coating, I may have to trash my 2 leveling towels & my 1-2 Ultra plush expensive $7 towels?
Never tested it with that coating
For an average car - how many towels are normally used to level and insurance?
One of each
Would it be a good idea to put ceramic gloss on 1 hour after coating application?
no, best to just let the coating cure until that first wash a week later. Then use Ceramic Gloss as a drying aid
What GSM is the "insurance towel" ?
500 , but that’s not important, use any plush towel.
hello i have a question , in my environment it's hard to machine polish , is it ok if i only clay towel? , my car just a new brand 1 year
Yes, do a full chemical decontamination
Is it possible to use just 2 towels for a mid size car?
Yep!
How long after applying the coating do you have to wait until you can take it outside ?
1 hour
Can we use this for matte paint?
Yes
@@diydetailofficial last question, can we also use 3yr graphene coating on the glass and plastic trims?
Yes
So circle when applying but straight line when leveling?
Yes that way you can be meticulous
Alot of orange peel on that car
Original 2001 paint.
Shudda fixed the ding first. Tell ur buddy he has some dirt under his upper lip..... Oh, Nevermind thats his Mustache lmao. Please tell him the Mustache looks rediculous and he looks like a 12 year old trying to grow a Mustache for his first middle school dance. Its not for him can u clue him in on that please.....
Both are taken care of.
If I wanted to apply a 5 year ceramic over a 9 year (for gloss & longevity etc) how would I go about doing that? How long to I have to wait? Is there anything else I should know? Thank you!
Apply the second layer between 2-8 hours after the first. The best combination is our 8 year topped with the 3 year. We have a video coming out about it on Sunday.
