  • The basics of applying a ceramic coating.
    Application
    -start with a clean and dry surface.
    -wipe down with DIY Detail panel prep.
    wearing gloves, in a well ventilated area, apply several drops to the applicator pad.
    working in a circular motion apply the DIY Detail Ceramic Coating to a small area.
    -allow to dwell 2-5 minutes ( dwell time is dependent on temperature and humidity).
    -observe the surface, as the coating begins to cross link to the paint, the coating will transition from a liquid to what looks like an oil slick on water.
    -when 50% of the surface turns back to clear, start leveling the coating with a Pearl weave microfibre towel
    with a Pearl weave towel, lightly wipe the surface, if the towel is dragging, or is getting wet, wait 1 min more.
    once the coating is leveled, use a plush towel to buff and remove high spots.

    Well, I applied the 5 year today to my VW Atlas Cross Sport. I washed, I decontaminated with the towel and iron remover, I polished, I panel prepped and finally I applied! The coating is so easy to apply. Easier than waxing. I put it on and I'd say in about a minute maybe 90 seconds I was leveling. I would say I used about 70% of the coating from the bottle on a pretty good size SUV. I'm hoping that's about right!
    Entire process took me 7 hours to do but most of that was the prep. The coating took a little over an hour. Needing a ladder for the roof really takes time!
    Can't wait to see it tomorrow in the daylight. It's in the garage for the night.

      @@diydetailofficialI will be posting it shortly! It looks so good. The gloss of the 5 year is no joke and it's so slick microfiber towels just slide off the hood. I am very happy I took the time to do the prep correctly. There's nothing difficult about it but it is a bit tedious. It's a 2022 so the paint was in good shape but the gold standard and gold pad really made a difference. My plan is to use Ceramic Gloss as a top coat.
      I'll be doing my Audi S5 and my wife's Mercedes GLC in the near future now that I realize how easy this is. I may break it down into two days but there's really nothing the average Joe can't do. Great product.

    Also a quick question on your rinseless. If I have already done my iron decon during the wash and want to clay with a TRC Ultra clay towel before polishing, does your rinseless provide enough lubrication on its own? Should I dilute 256:1 or 128:1?

    Great video! Very informative and interesting explanation on applying the coating in circular motions, makes sense that it would increase the chances of high spots when applying in straight lines.
    How often should you swap out the applicator pad and towels? I would imagine that the coating would eventually start to cure and harden, which could lead to marring if continued to be used?

    I have a couple questions, I see you have your towels folded into 4ths, do you typically use 1/4 of each towel per panel or can you use the same side for a few panels? Also, do you throw away the towel after the coating job or can we salvage the towel with rags to riches? Thanks in advanced! 🤙

    • @diydetailofficial
      @diydetailofficial  Рік тому +2

      Great question, one towel should suffice for the whole vehicle, change sides as you see fit. The reason it’s folded is to reduce pressure points. When done installing your coating soak your towels and applicator in your wash bucket to stop the cross linking of the coating, and pre-clean them.

    This is a bit tangential - I believe you said in another video that the applicators & wipe off cloths can be reused, if they are quickly put in a wash solution (e.g DIY Rinseless). You also stated that the reason this works is because of the surfactants preventing cross-linking. In the past, I remember you saying an ONR solution would also work. My question is: how can ONR work, since it is a polymer based product, with no(?) surfactants? Or does ONR still contain a small amount of surfactants? (I currently have a long way to go to finish my bottle of ONR - I use it very slowly, because I use it at the rinseless dilution, but using the "waterless" method. #rebel )

      With Optimum Coatings it works, with other coatings it may or may not work because of the base resin used.

      @diydetailofficial So are you saying that if, for ex., I use MOHS EVO coating, I may have to trash my 2 leveling towels & my 1-2 Ultra plush expensive $7 towels?

      Never tested it with that coating

    Would it be a good idea to put ceramic gloss on 1 hour after coating application?

      @diydetailofficial  Рік тому

      no, best to just let the coating cure until that first wash a week later. Then use Ceramic Gloss as a drying aid

    If I wanted to apply a 5 year ceramic over a 9 year (for gloss & longevity etc) how would I go about doing that? How long to I have to wait? Is there anything else I should know? Thank you!

      Apply the second layer between 2-8 hours after the first. The best combination is our 8 year topped with the 3 year. We have a video coming out about it on Sunday.
