Pretty in depth review Kyle, glad to see it done properly, after long periods of use as opposed to some people who review gear right out of the box or after an hours use. Glad to see you back, cheers till the next one!
Thanks for the review! Ive been curious about that bag for a while. I’ve been using the HMG Southwest 3400 for a few years now. I’d give it a solid 8-9/10 for my purposes with my main complaint being access to the main compartment being roll-top only, which is also a main advantage as a streamlined waterproof(ish) bag. Even after a few years, it’s perfectly rain proof. I’ve only had anything get remotely damp after actually submerging it in stream crossing.
Thank you for the review! I literally had this bag in my cart and thought let me watch a review first. No side compression straps are a deal breaker for me and I didn’t realize it didn’t have any. I like to do some backwoods fishing and need that strap to hole the rod tube in place.
Great review Kyle. I was worried that you would make me want to buy it, but after the review, it sounds like something else would be better for my needs. Thanks very much for sharing with us and I look forward to more stuff from you!
Solid review. Few things to add. I own this pack as well and my water bottle pockets are EXTREMELY roomy and very very easily fit a Nalgene 32 oz, I can usually fit other things in with it. I like the trekking pole storage as well, although it’s not as nice as my ospreys. Lastly I do like the cord on the front of the pack, I’ve slung jackets thru it when my pack was too full and I end up shoving tons of things in the front pocket as well. I agree with all other points made (especially the airplane seats), well done.
I've had my daybreak for somewhere i'd guess around 5 years. I've worn it almost daily in urban regular kinds of environments. It has seen rain, yanking, its been "overstuffed" and it still has yet to fully die/ blow out. What has gone wrong, and it is a huge issue.. several times now - are the zippers. Like you mention in the review - mine have gone off their tracks. So when I seal the bag, there are times where the seal splits open between the zippers and my bag opens up. This has happened to me while its on my back so i'm not even aware that my stuff could just be falling out on the streets. Huge issue. I sent my pack in letting them know about this a year or so ago asking if it were possible to receive a replacement. Instead they re sew the zipper or said they did.. seemed like they did. Any way the pack is back to splitting open at the zippers again. Aside from this issue. The durability and water proofedness of the fabric for me - has been very impressive. I've had mine for years and it only seems like its now blowing out at the top of the pack where you mentioned as well. I would recommend this bag if it weren't for the zipper issue heavily for light carry. I'm acutally about to take mine plein airing upstate in a week or so for the first time. So it will be my first "real" hike in general and with the pack.
Great review man! Curious - what did you end up replacing it with? I'm thinking of getting this bag - looking for a similar use. LIghtweight daybag that also works well for plane trips. What did you find out there that you liked better?
Great review! I really appreciate your thorough test mentality. I'm not a big fan of unboxing vids, how can you review it if you've never used it? Thanks for the log term tips on Cuban fiber, I've never used any before and have been curious. Looking forward to more reviews from you.
That really depends. 3 major factors come to mind for me. 1. Activity-general hiking, running, climbing, water sport, fishing, etc. 2. Time of year - need a bigger pack in the winter for more gear and clothes. 3. Camera set up - bigger camera = bigger pack. I will do some more reviews of packs when I get the time.
Like mash it up into a ball? It has some foam in the back panel so I don’t think you could do that. It also does not have any compression so it kind of is the size it is.
@@BurleyOutdoors Yeah, I was talking to somebody and they said they could smash it down to the size of a water bottle, but after watching your video, that seems unlikely. Maybe they had a different pack. Also, sorry I called you Daniel if that is inaccurate, lol. Thanks for the reply.
It would work but not be my first choice. Not sure how much photography gear you are hauling but I would look Peak Designs or Shimoda for day hike bags with better organization for photography gear. I have packs from both companies and they are great.
Yooo

Did you find your ferro rod???
Great to see you back again! very good review! I look forward to seeing more!
Very informative, looking forward to your other reviews.

Check out the Patagonia Stealth 30L. Very similar layout to the HMG daypack but with side compression.

I wish they'd bring the duffel back. It's awesome.
You were back, it was great and then, you drifted away again. Come back. Always nice to watch folks from Columbus
Dude!! Thanks for posting again.
For side compression use the existing white keepers and the daisy chains
Good to see You back was worried Joe's Plane had abducted You lol
Hooo. Just adding to Joe's comment! Lol.
Kyle you should move here, you are too nice and too Canadian and that's a compliment!
I’m so glad you are back great video

Great review! What is the best day pack in your opinion? Thank you
Good question. I don’t have one favorite but a couple of go to ones depending on what I want to do. I will put up some videos soon on them.
@@BurleyOutdoors yes please do this was a really good review 👏🏻 thank you
Can you do the simple pack from John Zahorian next ?

Yes!
Not a big fan of those types of packs, but i am on the look out for a laptop pack
Ever tried a canvas backpack? Very durable.
Burley Outdoors, which daypack would you recommend then?

What did you replace it with.
what is the most affordable pack that will allow you to carry an ax, or is designed to do so... thanks
Hello Daniel, how small can you compact this bag?
Like mash it up into a ball? It has some foam in the back panel so I don’t think you could do that. It also does not have any compression so it kind of is the size it is.

All good. HMG has another pack called the summit pack. That one you can compact really small
How tall are you and what size pack is this?
5’9. Size large pack
What about for an overnight with tent and all?
My most used multi day pack for the past 5 years has been the ULA Circuit. Good pack.
Anybody used this with 20 pounds in it? Want it as a hiking photography day pack but saw weight limit was only up to 25 pounds

“Easy of Use”
No way!
