The way to get him to write the 3rd book is to totally ignore him. He has received plenty of adulation for his excellent first two novels. But if people stop tuning into his twitch, if they stop supporting his charity, even ignore him in public; make him culturally irrelevant, I bet you he sits down and starts writing again.

he's definitely got a lot of nerve with last year's live stream promises. i was tuning in and tryna not get excited, but hopeful. and the prologue definitely made me hold my breath for a moment.

Its probably not a grift, clearly he's just stuck ESPECIALLY lately and has no will or passion to get through the parts he has left to work on.
He read the prologue and likely wanted to release another chapter.
Like what was said and he told the pizza guy that time, "the charity is what i'm working on."
      He's not a 1 page a day author.
He's not a chew bubble gum and walk at the same time author.
He claims he's writing a bunch of world lore to go back the past 5000 years or so to have everything in book 3 make sense but I don't think thats really true or if it is true then he's not busy with it.
So feed imposter system, anxiety, and perfectionist sides of his personality
Then add depression as the bubble is bursting, he's no longer doing acq inc, he's not as active on the con circuit, and he's not on twitch either so it seems.

@@SupremeBeyonderthe relationship some fans have to authors now is strange. Full of entitlement, demands, and character assassination. Yet, the spreading of all that negativity is meant so that the fan can finally read the new book/purchase the product. My wild guess is this is a mirror of 2 things: the increase of permissive parenting, where the kids seem to run the show with their tyrannical sways of emotional outbursts. So, kids using negative emotion to punish their parents into giving them love. Secondly, it's due to cultural shifts in the meaning of protest. Protests these days are highly consumerist, much more so than, say, in the 60s. Also, the idea of protest is to demand some action or change. Making demands forms a sneaky relationship where you feel you have power and self-determination, but in asking for something, you're implicitly confessing your submissive status. All in all, this abuse flung at authors whose work you want to read is such a strange relationship, like a country of protesters, whose allegiances are never fully in or out, they are simply exuberantly self absorbed in consuming more and more.

Ive seen a lot of comparisons between this guy and GRRM, but to my mind theres alot of differences between the two. Its very clear that GRRM has been writing the entire time since ADWD. Between the show itself, Fire and Blood, A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms, and the several preview chapters which have dropped over the years. GRRM slowed down but never stopped and has never been secretive either about the fact that he is working, and the fact that hes struggled so much with these last two books. GRRM also isnt a dick to his fans and has never scammed them. He has certainly expressed frustration with fan reactions and expectations, and Ive seen enough discourse online to know that sometimes hes entirely valid in feeling that way, but hes not vindictive or unkind. He also hasnt completely left his publisher to die without him. In addition to how much sales spiked when the show was on, hes released material in the series since. Fire and Blood and A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms added valuable information to the overall narrative, and gained he publisher good chunks of change. Part of that is because GRRM struggled for a long time as a writer. He knows what its like to be a starving artist even when you're deeply skilled. Rothfuss let his hype consume him and now hes unworthy of it.
    Its very sad to see.

It's sad when you see the decline of the fantasy genre. We have LoTR (Tolkien) as the 10/10 genre-defining book, then WoT (Robert Jordan) leading the helm among others (The Magician Guild series by Tracy Hickman, The Mistborn series by Branden Sandersan, Troy series by David Gemmel). Now, we are left with authors like Patrick Rothfuss, George RR Martin & Neil Gaiman, who let success/greed get to their heads and do everything except write/finish their books. I mean... Robert Jordan & David Gemmel literally dictated their books when they were on their deathbeds.

I found the text of book 3. Chronicler awoke refreshed the following morning, and he walked down to the bar at the Waystone Inn awaiting Kvothe’s arrival to finish the story he had told the past two days. But as the day wore on, and the hours turned form morning until noon until night, Kvothe never came.
When Bast showed up as the sun was setting, Chronicler asked where his master was.

“He needs his sleep,” Bast said. “How can you begrudge him that?”

“Of course,” Chronicler said. “Do you have any idea when he’s going to wake up?”
“He’s not your bitch,” Bast replied.
As he retired to his room that night, Chronicler poked his head in to Kvothe’s room to make sure he was still breathing. Kvothe was awake, playing solitaire.
“Chronicler!” Kvothe said, smiling. “Check out these cool cards! Aren’t they awesome?”
“Well, yes, I suppose so,” he said. “I was surprised, though, when you didn’t come down to finish the story.”

“I will finish soon,” Kvothe said. “And like Aslan, I call all times ‘soon.’ ”
Chronicler didn’t know who Aslan was, but he didn't want to pry. Kvothe, after all, was not his bitch. Not even a little bit.
The next morning, Chronicler was up before sunrise, and as he walked down to the common room of the Waystone, he saw Kvothe waiting on a handful of customers who had come for breakfast.
“Hey, look, it’s Chronicler!” Kvothe cried. “Everyone say hello to Chronicler!”
Three people waved. One unsuccessfully tried to stifle a fart so foul it would have killed a king.

Chronicler waved back, turned to Kvothe, and said “Do you want to get started?”
“Way ahead of you,” Kvothe said. He handed him a clutch of papers the included eight pages of crude drawings of a girl making soap.
Chronicler looked at the drawings and tilted his head. “I don’t understand.”
“It’s soap!” Kvothe said. “Everyone needs soap!”

“Yes, but it’s not a story,” Chronicler said. “And it’s certainly not your story.”
    “So?”
“So people expect certain things from a story. If people read this story looking for those things, they wouldn’t get them, so they’ll be dissatisfied.”

“Fuck those people,” Kvothe said. The crowd murmured their assent to this sentiment, and one started speaking in a strange language, which led Bast to think perhaps he was a skin dancer, but it turned out he was just Pentecostal.

Chronicler turned to look at Bast, who gave him a thumbs up and threw a knife at him. Chronicler ducked, and the blade lodged itself in the ear of the farting guy.

When it was clear that he wasn’t going to get any more info out Chronicler went back to his room, where Bast joined him in short order.

Can you help explain what’s going on?” Chronicler asked.
Bast sneered an evil sneer. “He doesn’t owe you anything,” he said.

“Well, no, he doesn’t, but it would still be nice to get the end of the story.”

“What part of ‘he’s not your bitch’ do you not understand?” Bast asked, sneering an even eviler sneer than the one he had just sneered, which was, in and of itself, already pretty evil.
“Well, most of it,” Chronicler said. “All of it, really. I never said he was my bitch. He just said he was going to finish his story, and now that he won't finish his story, and - ”
At that moment, Kvothe burst into the room. “Guys, good news! I have a big announcement to make!”

Chronicler smiled. “You’re going to finish the story?”
Kvothe smirked. “What? No!” He then held out two small bags of stones. “Look! I made tinker’s packs! Who wants one?”
Chronicler reached out his hand to take one, but Kvothe pulled the sacks back. “Buy two, get one free,” he scowled. “I’m not your bitch!” He then smiled and skipped out of the room, throwing playing cards over his shoulders as he frolicked down the stairs.
“What do you mean you ‘don’t get it?’” Bast said extra-sneeringly. “Did you see how happy he is? Don’t you want him to be happy?”
    “Well, yes, I…”

    “DIDN’T YOU SEE HIM FROLIC?!”
“I saw him frolic, certainly, but…”

“Repeat after me - NOT. YOUR. BITCH.”
“If it’s all the same, I’d rather not.”
Bast’s eyes bulged out like Large Marge in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, and then there was a puff of sulfury smoke, and he was gone, but not at all like Nightcrawler from the X-Men, who Bast sort of resembles if you think about it.
So the next morning, Chronicler woke up and found that Kvothe had gone on tour to sell his cards and tinker’s packs. Chronicler sighed, and then he began to weep as he realized that Kvothe wasn’t his bitch - he, Chronicler, was actually KVOTHE’S bitch.
At that point, Chronicler took up residence in the Waystone Inn, waiting for Kvothe to return. Days turned into weeks, and then months to years. Occasionally, he received letters where Kvothe complained about politics and others where he tried to sell him stuff, and one with a story about a cat, but there was no word at all as to when or if Kvothe would actually finish the story. Chronicler would write back, and he would ask, politely, whether or not Kvothe had any intention of finishing the tale he had started so long ago.
Kvothe finally came home six and a half years later, and Chronicler was overjoyed to see him. “How was your journey?”
“It was fine, except for your letters,” Kvothe snarked snarkily.
“What?” Chronicler said. “What do you mean?”
“When you ask about day three - “ he made a whiny noise. “ ‘Wheeeen’s day threee?' That’s what y'all sound like to me when you... “ He made another whiny noise. "You know like the sound of of like a nail being dragged across my teeth combined with the smell of someone who just... shit on themselves. That's the sound it makes in my head when you are like ‘When’s day three, you said we would be done years ago.’ “
Just then, an asteroid hit Temerant and everyone was wiped out in an extinction level event. Also, Denna was a dude the whole time. The end

No writer does that, even if they haven't touched the story for a long time. Someone even commented that he probably got the story from someone else who isn't alive anymore so of course he cannot finish the story. Who is Patrick Rothfuss? Well, he's a guy who went to college for a long long time, and made a self-insert character in his book who does just the same. What does that denote? It denotes the type of person who, for whatever reason, enjoys "running the race" far more than reaching the finish line. I'm not saying that in itself is a bad or good thing. There are several good reasons to "enjoy the journey" over the destination.
This man was given the task of turning his one oversized book into three smaller books, it's not even the same task of making three books from scratch. He's been working on this one story for most of his life at this point. Completing book 3 is not just completing book 3, it's closing the door on a major chapter of his life, and that honestly just doesn't seem like an idea that Rothfuss is comfortable with. The tragedy, in my opinion, is that being stuck in this "race" or "journey" prevents him from partaking in any others, and given how long and difficult this particular process for this particular saga has been for both him and his fans, how many people would even want to partake in the next one knowing this author's habits?

There is no way book 3 is going to make people happy. Book 2 was such an odd second novel and does not move the plot forward much in regard to the first novels "promise". so much would have to happen to address all the questions built up over book 1 and 2 that I can't see it happening in a similar number of pages or without a fourth book.
Rothfuss himself may be having mental health issues but that won't change the fact he has sullied his reputation as an author. He got famous quickly and lived off the benefits of that fame, enjoying conventions, meeting celebrities and now I think resents the fandom for expectations he has set.

The style of simplified prose is a strategy he employs because it allows him to write quickly and focus on the emotional connections to characters. It's not that he CAN'T write sophisticated prose - but that also doesn't mean he's the right person for this series. We already know that he can emulate other authors' writing styles. Robert Jordan didn't have a particularly simple prose style, but most casual readers don't even notice a major difference when transitioning to Sandersons' installments in wheel of time.

I'm beginning to think it may be one of three things, because when there are no plausible answers, no logical reasons, and no efforts to communicate truthfully, it winds up being one or more of 3 reasons; an addiction (games, drugs, alcohol, etc.), mental health issues ( depression, anxiety , coping badly with fame and fortune), and/or the muse has left the building (writer's block, or painted one's self into a corner). I can't begin to count the number of times I have recommended his books to friends, acquaintances, and anyone in the fiction or fantasy section of any bookstore I've been to. This is a real letdown. He's the only writer I have read, that once I finished the first two books, as well as The Slow Regard of Silent Things, I have immediately gone back to the beginning to reread them. The emotional pull as well as the world-building and the intelligence of the author's works is awesome. He has set himself up for high expectations from his readers/fanbase. I hope he can finish this, at least for himself, if not for us.

Given all the pent-up expectation there is NO way that Book 3 will EVER measure up. Because expectations are too high. If I had two highly successful novels I'd be working on Book 3 instead of farting around on social media and running a charity and whatnot. He might have a terrible case of writer's block. He might have zero passion for writing at this point. I think it's better to spend one's time waiting for the next Pynchon novel to drop rather than Patrick's 3rd novel.

Just give the 3rd book to Sanderson to finish... Whatever I checked out. I only care enough to post this silly comment.

If an author hadn’t made promises to his audience regarding a piece of work then I would be of the opinion that that author owed nothing to anyone. It was just a bunch of First-World cry-babies throwing their toys out of the pram. But PR has courted and teased his fanbase with book 3 for nearly a decade. My own opinion: when I read the first few chapters of ITNOTW I was of the opinion that the author had written himself into a corner. I loved that book. It’s an damn near perfect underdog story. But what was going to come next? A picaresque tale of Kvothe becoming more and more awesome? Where’s the fun in reading that? I thought he should have left it at one book. Let the readers fill in the blanks. When the second book came out, I liked it fine enough, but I didn’t connect with the protagonist. Instead of coming along for a ride I was just watching a ride happen. The man has made a cross for his own back. If he would just come out and say, “I’m sorry, but the story I envisioned is just unwritable. I quit.” I’d have a lot more respect for him.

My main issue is... He literally said the third book was done when he released the second. Why even say that. Why express it. The likelihood is that he didn't have the end. Or he did and realized it was not the end. Either way... Give us something. Not these half things.

I liked the books but I dont compare Patrick to Tokien, Sanderson or GRR Martin. He is a little overrated and even if his books are entertaining, they are not masterpieces. I really loved the first one but the second was a bit boring sometimes and I didnt feel it as the "king's killer chronicles". Its just a magic bard who doesnt have money and that is in love with an exhausting woman. I lost interest in the third book long time ago but if he releases it I guess I'll read it but Im not hyped at all

I support Rothfuss very much. I consider him one of the best fantasy novelists around today. But people are tired of waiting. I am tired of waiting. I get he's probably editing and revising it, I get he wants to make it perfect in his eyes. But here's thing: perfection doesn't exist, its a myth! Nothing will ever be perfect man. I get he wants it to come across well to his readers, but his prose and lyrical writing is beautiful. Regardless we just want a conclusion, a good one yes. Although, I think he's bit of more than he can chew. There is so much story left to tell, and I don't think its possible to finish it in one last book. It would have to be atleast four or five. I understand it takes time to write a fantasy book, but its been 12 years....12! Thats ridiculous! The problem here is his behavior man... when anytime someone asks about the third novel or even just mentions it in passing, he explodes or gets uncomfortable about it. Like if someone was wanting to know the progress on my book I would love that! It wouldn't make me feel 'dread.' The fact that he is getting angry with his fans about it is pretty stupid. I would never speak to my fans like that. I get the pressure of it, sure its annoying to be remarked about it constantly, but its pretty maddening to hear him act like a narcotic pig. Mental health, yes is nothing to laugh or snort at, its a difficult topic and it does effect peoples lives heavily. I've gone through depression and anxiety before and its crushing. But using it as an excuse to just get more clout from his first two books and failing promises is not right. Not only has he blocked people for asking about the third book, negative comments on tweets and videos, is childish for a fifty year old man. But he has NOT delivered the first promised chapter reading. Its been over a year, not apology. Your fans, including me, sent money to you man, and raised 1.25 million dollars to hear it. I'm surprised no one has started a lawsuit or sued him for it honestly.
So this has lead me to believe nine theories on the progress of The Doors of Stone:
    1. He is readily editing and revising it as of now and trying to finish it, is what I am hoping for.
    2. He hasn't been working on it as much.
    3. Its being worked on, but it won't come out till the summer of 2023, or sometime in 2024
    4. The pressure has gotten to him so badly he stopped writing it.
    5. Or the scariest theory, he is lying on how much progress he has made on it, like mentioning he has written 400,000 words of it already. And to be honest, I don't think he has a lot of it done like he has told anyone.
    6. He has grown tired of creating it and is taking a break, which means an extreme delay on the release date.
    7. He has realized he's shot himself in the foot and made the story way bigger than he imagined, which makes him think he can't do it in just one more single work.
    8. Or a slim ray of hope, he has been silent for like almost 10 months. No streams on twitch, very little tweets, and updates. And that it's just going to come out randomly with no if or warning.
    9. Or it just simply is never going to come out.
So, yeah. I'm sick of the drama surrounding the book and awaiting it. I know this a long comment and a rant, but I am just tired of his behavior. When you advertise your books as a trilogy make it a fucking trilogy. At this point, I've started to write up to 2,000 pages of the third book myself.

Dude needs to just hire a team to ghost write the book. I'll stick to matt dinniman. I subscribe to his patreon and get to read his new book, chapter by chapter every few weeks as he writes it. Every once in a while he'll do a poll where we all vote in some upcoming element of the story. As much as I want to finish rothfuss' series, I know it not likely to ever happen.
