I don't remember the AI in MK2 being susceptible to the jump kick spam... is that an arcade only thing?
Yes, but only in Revision 2.1 or lower and only from player 2 side (playing from player 2 start). Also the timing to get the jump kick off is not as easy as it looks, you need to be at long range and press kick at the peak of the jump arc in such away that your kick connects with their "chin or lower". If you do it right you will see them "stop walking in place" and eat the jump kick.
This also has a very interesting secondary glitch effect that disables the AI's ability to block until they stand up again, meaning you can get repeat free jump kicks back to back and a few other tricks like Mileena being able to go infinite with jump kick - roll ball loop.
Console versions are for the most part based on revision 3.1 of the Arcade where this exploit was patched so it doesn't work on any console version/pc version and the Arcade Kollection and Arcade Deluxe versions are all 3.1 as well.
@@DarkTenka I see, figured as much I suppose, but it definitely surprised me to see the old OG MK1 strat being used and somehow working here.
There are still glitches that can be exploited with Scorpion’s teleport.
@@christianrapper5 are you talking about when you long range "fake teleport" and it causes the AI to projectile in the wrong direction? If not, then you've got me curious.
But yeah, there are TONNES of other exploits that can be used if you want to "just beat the game", on all the revisions. Playing on 2.1 gives you the most exploits and subsequently "the most tools" which is why for the most part rev 2.1 has become the optimal choice for speedrunning.

You guys realise that 3.1 is not that hard either right? .. its just slower lol. Instead of long range jk you infinite walk exploit or JBE or PPP hop. MK2 is actually the easiest MK to beat out of all the classics when you know how

@@danfrontman I literally did one last night using Liu Kang lol, I got a run of 8:00 flat which I "think" might actually be technically the "version 3.1 no high punch trick" world record, but it isnt something anyone in the speedrun community recognises or cares about.
For context though, the current NHPT Liu Kang WR time is 7:56 using 2.1, so its only 4 seconds off, but the Liu Kang WR can be improved significantly with 2.1, so I'm basically handicapping myself for no reason playing 3.1 .. which is stupid ... but fuck it lol .. yall made me want to show it can be done. So I might upload that to YT tonight (you can watch it rn if you check my twitch vod, but you will have to search for it in about 5 hours of footage)

Long story short, this is revision 2.1. It was an earlier version of the game released in arcades, still an officially released version. In 2.1, when playing on p2 side, Baraka does not have the blade slicer anti-air AI pattern. (Technically he does, but it is much rarer and you have to trigger it differently).
But also, there is a really neat exploit we found called the "edge kick" or "long range junp kick" that also specifically works in revision 2.1 on P2 side. Basically you need to jump kick from long range, press kick at the peak of your jump, and connect hitting your opponent in the chin or lower.
If you succeed correctly, 2 things happen.
1. The AI will derp out and stand still, not blocking the jump kick.
2. The AI will disable blocking completely until it is able to stand up again, which allows you to get multiple jump kicks in succession .. and a few other tricks like infinite Mileena roll balls.
This trick is easier to do with some characters than others. The female ninjas do it best. Male ninjas are pretty good at it too. Liu Kang and Kung Lao are terrible at it due to their floaty jump arcs.
This trick works on revision 2.1 or lower. It does not work on 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2 (euro).
If you found an arcade MK2 in the wild, there is a good chance it is on 3.1 and this will not work.
"playing on p2 side", does it mean playing as P2 only? Or can I be player 1 and jump over the right side (so I'm now on the right, facing left)?
I think it means playing as P2 but curious anyways.
@@tim.martin No, you literally have to START as P2 (or lose the game and continue as P2). The game sets you up with entirely different AI patterns to fight against based on which side of the cabinet you would have been playing from. It's like having 2 entirely different games in one.
Some AI patterns play better with certain characters than others for MK2. E.g. any of the Female Ninja's/Liu Kang/Raiden dont get access to the P1 side only "Jump back Exploit" .. but can still use the P2 side only "Infinite Walk Exploit" .. so they are much better suited to P2 side use than P1 side.

Haha cool. Now get this time with 3.1 :P Why is 3.1 not the standard? Its much harder.
In general, we allow any officially released revision of Arcade games as with emulators you can generally access all versions equally. Even if you have the board, you can burn the roms you want. In speedrunning we look for the fastest routes we can and versions that are faster generally become optimal.
3.1 not having access to the p2 side long range jump kick exploit would make scorpion considerably slower.
Having said that, I did originally submit a scorpion run on 3.1 6 years ago and it was the WR for scorpion at the time. Ill see if I can dig it up for you
