I started doing this recently after seeing and feeling my sons frustration to get through a page of reading. It has made a world of a difference! I hear my son read with more confidence after he hears me read a page to him and he is smiling! Thank you for sharing all your wonderful tips!!
This was a confirmation that I'm doing something right! My 9yo has dyslexia and has just taken off reading on her own this year. I read the Ramona Quimby books to her aloud, just for bedtime stories, and she asked if she could read them by herself for school reading. She is zipping through them and living it, and says it is much easier to read them because she has already heard the stories before.
I don't focus on spelling the words, just that they understand them. For spelling they work on the words they actually mispell on their daily writing assignments. You could just have them copy them and work on memorizing them if you wanted.
What level is this? I have a 6 year old and she’s not so fluent she’s struggling a bit but she’s almost there. She does cvc words but she needs more practice. Where do I start with the McGuffeys?
I would now recommend you start with Favell Lee Mortimer's Reading Without Tears. Just work through a couple pages of that a day and you will see a huge improvement.

Oh that is so great to hear, thank you for sharing!
You can bet there are a lot of struggling readers that are going to be helped a lot by this approach. Thank you for sharing Karen.
This is soo helpful. This is gold.
Thank you!
Right after I watched this, I found the entire set of McGuffey Readers at a thrift bookstore for $17! Definitely a helpful video! Thank you!
SCORE!!
Thank you Karen.
Anytime, thank you for watching!

Yes! 🙌
Hi Karen, which edition do you recommend? The original edition or the revised edition? Thank you.
Original if you can find it.
Thanks for the information. How do you work with the vocabulary list? How do you get them to learn to spell the words on it?
Thanks
