J.T. was the teacher of both Paracelsus and Cornelius Agrippa. John Dee was well aware of this book as well.
That's very interesting, especially in the context of Dee being accused of spying during his visit to Poland. Also, according to Wikipedia, Robert Hooke suggested that John Dee used Trimethian steganography to conceal his communication with Elizabeth I.

I was lucky enough to see this painting close up in the archives of the Wellcome Library! The story about the skull array was a bit eerie when you’re standing right in front of it - it’s pretty big and that empty space right in front of Dee really draws you in.

The four skulls represent John Dee's wife and two children that died during the Bubonic Plague. His one son was actually speculated to be Kelleys. He also had two daughters, yet their fates are unknown. It is speculated at least one or both of them perished in the same epidemic.
John Dee was interested in his Welshness. I believe if I remember his diaries; he travelled to Newcastle Emlyn in Carmarthenshire to trace and contact his cousins. It’s noted that one of his cousins was one Thomas Jhones, who is the Welsh ‘Robin Hood’, also known as Twm Shon Cati. So indeed, the Welshess of Dee is worth noting.
Amazingly an ancient offshoot of the lost tribes of Israel ended up in wales/ southern England. That’s why it was always a massively historical part of the world where many notable names traveled to or tried to conquer. It’s a tiny island that held very few benefits back then so it makes you wonder why everyone’s been fighting for it for millennia. Glastonbury is a very sacred place as well.

I was crushed when I was visiting London and the John Dee museum exhibit was closed😢 Fortunately I got to visit Prague a few days later and got to learn about and tour his life there.
Well done. I would not be surprised to learn that the artist created and then deliberately hid the skulls (and other details) as homage to the hidden supernatural rather than a desire to tone down the visual story. The absence of the floating alligator (or crocodile) and Edward Kelly in the X-Ray image (along with other items) could be a statement of another sort; I've read that some consider Kelly to have been a deliberate charlatan who manipulated and deceived Dee. The painting certainly encourages exotic speculation.
Definitely added after the picture was completed, and the dark heavy figure made this way to cover up the background from showing through, but clearly absent in the xray. The artist may have felt the "weight" of the scene played to heavily on the left side of the canvas and added the dark figure to bring some equality across the scene. There does not seem to be anthing really sinister, but I cannot see clearly enough to tell what is being covered.............Perhaps something was there that would have been incredibly offensive, such as items deemed to have no purpose other than magics, and perhaps the darker end of that realm, was visible before the assistant was added.
Newton was similarly a hermetic scholar. Their kind of high-brow esotericism wasn't necessarily equated with witchcraft. This started to change with the translation of the OT into English, but it wasn't until the age of enlightenment that the incompatibility of science and magic became the consensus
It's pretty ironic because science is just magic that works. And belief in magic probably fueled the imaginations of the enlightened. You can't write a great work by learning a dictionary, or paint a masterpiece by watching someone paint a house. Magic was ultimately just a way of conditioning the mind using ritual, allegory or other various methods, so the intellect could follow along, speculate and strive for ideas beyond the limits of human comprehension. It's sad that its place was lost.
I think Newton was certainly interested in alchemy rather than the hermetica. Casaubon had discredited the antiquity of the hermetica by was it early 17th. Still, Newton was an energetic polymath, interested in everything. Hasn’t Bill Newman just written on Newton? Newman is a very good author historian of science.

(The deceiving legacy of secularism / satanism) 4:17 No. *Theology, the Queen of the Sciences.* The study of the phenomenal leads to knowledge of the Creator, ultimately the purpose of science (Maimonides, Newton, Einstein, etc). Theological science is Natural Philosophy, but this is not medieval or early modern, instead references preclassical Greeks. Hermetiscism, Alchemy, Physics, Humanism, and Scholasticism of the middle ages was very much Christian, all be it often heretical (even Plato was banned by the Vatican). As described here, some of what Dee, Kelly, and others practiced however was certainly not in line with biblical piety but witchcraft, pagan astrology, contacting spirits, and soothsaying.

As a former scientific rationalist, who abandoned science when it couldn't explain my repeated prophetic dreams, I found John Dee to be an inspiration and ceremonial magick a better method for understanding reality. Enochian Magick is the child of Dee and Kelley. Ah, the con man Kelley who Aleister Crowley believed was one of his incarnations. Did he have a real gift for scrying? My best guess is yes, the Enochian messages he received are too internally consistent to be gibberish, and people practice such magick to this day with remarkable results, but since this happened half a millennium ago, all we have are guesses.
In the end magic is simply science which cannot be easily deciphered. Everything that occurs and exists, in truth, is "rational", the only distinction is what can be quantified and what can only be qualified.

I have a biography of John Dee sitting on one of my bookshelves which I've never gotten around to reading. Might be time.

Theological science is Natural Philosophy, but this is not medieval or early modern, instead references preclassical Greeks. Hermetiscism, Alchemy, Physics, Humanism, and Scholasticism of the middle ages was very much Christian, all be it often heretical (even Plato was banned by the Vatican). As described here, some of what Dee, Kelly, and others practiced however was certainly not in line with biblical piety but witchcraft, pagan astrology, contacting spirits, and soothsaying.

Terrific video. As a former scientific rationalist, who abandoned science when it couldn't explain my repeated prophetic dreams, I found John Dee to be an inspiration and ceremonial magick a better method for understanding reality. Enochian Magick is the child of Dee and Kelley.
Ah, the con man Kelley who Aleister Crowley believed was one of his incarnations. Did he have a real gift for scrying? My best guess is yes, the Enochian messages he received are too internally consistent to be gibberish, and people practice such magick to this day with remarkable results, but since this happened half a millennium ago, all we have are guesses.
In the end magic is simply science which cannot be easily deciphered. Everything that occurs and exists, in truth, is "rational", the only distinction is what can be quantified and what can only be qualified.

Could be just a case of palimpsest. Canvas and painting materials were expensive back then. Tons of medieval artists painted over old paintings w new, even The Last Supper if I remember correctly.
