at 4:20, when you loaded the film you forgot to slot the film into one of the slits on the take up spool on the right. so the film wasn’t loaded properly.
one sign is after you closed the back, at 4:26, the film rewind knob on the top left should spin when you advance the film with the lever. if the rewind knob doesn’t spin, there’s a good chance the film hadn’t been loaded properly.
this is likely the reason why your roll was blank.

Yup, the rewind lever not spinning is a huge red flag.

Next time you get stuck in the middle of a roll, write down the frame number. Then unwind the film until you hear the film come off the take-up spool--that's usually the moment the winder is more easily moved and you'll hear the film leader detaching. Remove film cartridge with film leader protruding. Then, when you get the issue resolved on the camera, or get another camera to finish the roll, load the same roll as you normally would and shoot the same number of frames that you were at before but with the lens cap or hand over lens so that you don't double-expose the film over the shots you had already taken. Then finish the remaining roll normally. This can also be done if you're shooting one roll and want to switch to a different roll midway through (e.g., for a different ISO or to go from color to B/W).

You can also buy a very inexpensive tool that let's you insert to a fully rewound roll and just pull out clean the leader and load the film to the last shot. I have had to do this many times. Also use a qtip with some alcohol and clean your artery terminal, that is will help eliminate the camera from locking up after periods of non use. Love this video. Thanks for sharing.

Great solution, Dustin! Oh, and I forgot to mention earlier. Whenever I’m loading a roll of film, I always have my lens cap on.

The reason you got a blank film roll is because with an SLR you need to tuck the film into the take-up spool so that it will wind on. Make sure the film is engaged with the sprockets. Wind a bit of film to make sure the sprockets are engaged and the film is loaded correctly. Then close the camera back. Advance the film with the film advance lever (to #1) and note that the rewind knob on the left side should rotate every time you advance the film. I saw that you just pulled the film over the take-up spool and didn't thread it into the spool. This works for more modern point and shoots as they have a sensor that starts the film advance for you, an SLR is more manual. Also with your first roll of Portra, you could have wound the roll back carefully and then felt the film release from the spool but before it's rolled back into the film canister, then you could try to shoot the roll again. Don't worry about the blank roll, it's happened to everybody once. Keep practicing (maybe use a dummy roll at home to check loading/unloading procedures) and shoot again with cheaper film until you get the hang of it. Good luck!

All part of the film shooting adventures. But as others have commented, have to make sure film is on sprockets and catching then wind on a bit. You can do a little with back door open to ease your mind it's winding. Then also when you close door and take pics, check that when advance between shots the rewind knob should spin. Keep up the good work!

Here you are, taking photos in NYC. About 40 years ago, I was taking photos in your country of S. Korea, I believe, with my Nikon FE2.
No longer interested in film due to the high cost of buying film and getting it processed. It isn't worth it anymore. An SD card is cheap and can hold hundreds of photos and videos with no waste in volved. Now I use a camera, the Sony A7R3 which looks very much like my Nikon FE2. Both are black. BTW, the FE is a beautiful camera, one of the best cameras made.

It happens to the best of us did the same thing when I first started . But just a note you could’ve put the porta back in (once you retrieved the tab) the photos you had taken would get a double exposure which is always super cool. Eventually you would get to the shots what weren’t exposed. Also if you ever need to check if you have film in the camera I would suggest going into a dark location like a bathroom or closet to open up the back. Or you could even get a dark bag. But we are all still learning. Thanks for sharing your experience even if it didn’t work out.

Enjoyed the video! Too bad there wasn’t any photos ☹️ digging the vibes still.
In the video you close the back before winding the film - what must have happened is that the film didn’t catch in to the latches in the camera (has happened to me). So what I always do is I put the film in camera and wind it a bit to see if it sticks. Then if the first two or so winds look ok, I close the back.
Another trick is to see if the rewind knob turns when you wind your film forward. It should move if the film is inserted correctly. Hope you get it right the next time!

If you accidentally hit the film release button on the bottom of the camera, generally speaking this will be reset when the film advance lever is advanced. This is also how you can get double exposures with SLR's. After taking a photo, and you want a double exposure, press the button on the bottom of the camera and then advance the film advance lever. This resets the mirror/shutter, but does not advance the film. Take another shot, and you'll have two exposures on the same frame. Advancing the film lever will work normally thereafter. Also, when looking through the viewfinder you're not able to see anything through the lens, that usually means the mirror is stuck in the upward position.

Batterys on wrong side, i made same mistake🙈

  • @henryrogers5500
    @henryrogers5500 2 роки тому +2

Hi sweetheart. Live and learn! In your video, I saw exactly what your mistake was and what caused your roll of film to come out all blank. When you loaded your film, you didn’t fully insert the end of the film leader into the take up spool slot. There are gear teeth on top and bottom that the film didn’t seat onto properly. Therefore, when you cocked the advance lever, it didn’t pull the film to wrap around the take up spool like it should have. You should be able to see the film leader wrap around the take up spool before you close the back of the camera.
Here is how you test to see if your film loaded properly:
After you load your film and close the back of your camera, crank the film advance lever back while looking at your film rewind handle/knob. You should see the rewind handle rotate counter clockwise each time you advance your film lever. If it’s not doing this, your film will not advance at all and your entire roll will be blank if you keep shooting. So here’s the thing: if immediately after loading your film and you crank the film advance lever to take your first shot and the rewind lever does not rotate, lift the rewind lever and open the back of your camera and re-insert your film properly, following what I said in the beginning of my response. Practice! You’ll be just fine, dear. 🙂

"Please don't do this unless you have to"... and if you have to, find a dark room! Or even better, get a film changing bag and always carry it with you in your camera bag. The second you open that back, anything you've shot is toast, no matter how little or quickly you open it. If you're in that situation again and you can't get somewhere absolutely dark, note the frame count and rewind the film until you hear a faint click. That's the leader disengaging from the take-up spool. Then and only then is it safe to open the back (still better to do it in the dark though), and you won't need a leader retriever. If you don't hear the sound, that means the film wasn't loaded correctly in the first place, and you'll need the retriever (get a leader retriever anyway - then you can always save your $20 roll of Portra).
Also, if the camera won't respond and the lever won't advance, and the viewfinder is dark with no lens cap on, that means your shutter and/or mirror are locked up. You can confirm that by removing the lens. You might even be able to see if your film is loaded that way. Could be that the last shot was fired with the camera set to "T", and the battery died or something like that. You were able to fix it by resetting the shutter with a turn past the "B" or "T" setting. Some cameras like the F3 have a manual shutter release in case the battery dies. I can't remember if the FE has one.

U just developed and scanned un used the fuji superia xtra 400 because when u loading the film is not properly take to the spool film lever. Nikon fe didnt have digital system loading film like camera pocket / point and shoot do😅😅

The electronics don't work because you put in the batteries up-side down.
I have an FM and it uses the same batteries. If I install the batteries up-side down, the light meter does not work.
Nine months later, I hope that helps.
The only way to break that camera is by tossing off a 20 story building. You can use it to POUND nails and it won't brake.
watch a few UA-cam videos about using the Nikon SE. You'll learn how to properly load the film, batteries ETC, ETC, ETC.

@@NataliePark YO. So recently I took out my Nikon FE and shot a roll with it, but due to me confusing it for another camera body I had just loaded, I was actually shooting an empty camera the whole time. I never noticed the film wasn't advancing because I never looked when I cocked the shutter. My first thought was it was Karma for laughing at your misfortune 😔
