- Watch the official "Pilot Training" clip from Top Gun: Maverick! Available on Digital now and on Blu-Ray and DVD November 1, 2022.
After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

I love how Maverick is aware of his own reckless ways from his youth that got him in trouble. "Easy Maverick, let's not get fired on the first day...." followed by, "Leaving your wingman, there's a strategy I haven't seen in a while."
Those are words Goose would have said to him.
A beautiful film in every aspect. So much better than the original. Yes, it stands in its own, but it needs the original for context.
Just a beautiful amazing film that will easily last the test of time.
Hangman is his nephew
@@hybridAbsol Not possible, Maverick is an only child.
@@andrewglass9706 who knows
This movie is arguably one of the best sequels ever made to such a popular movie from back in the day.
It’s literally Star Wars a new hope dawg from the trench run to the ending
It is the best of its kind
@@WorthlessProductions It's nothing like A New Hope. The trench run similarity is surface level only.
It's not "arguably", it is, in fact, the best sequel to a retro film ever made.
Even better, it's a solid film that stands on its own merits. Then again, that's probably why it's a great sequel. :)
I like how Rooster is the only one to take him seriously. He hates his guts, but he knows how good he is.
Phoenix also took him seriously, she just had the misfortune of being teamed with Hangman who didn't.
Notice how, when Mav introduced himself, Rooster donned his O2 mask immediately! He also tried to warn the guys as they were making the bet.
nice catch!@@markymarknj
This movie is so Hollywood corny I expect John Wayne to come back from the grave any minute and throw rocks at it. And it grossed a billion? Wow have standards of what's considered entertainment taken a dive or what? Hahahaha
@@bill2953 Compared to most of the shit being made these days this movie was great. It's all relative.
lol. I love the Hangman-Phoenix-Bob scene. And her response of "I'm dead, dickhead" with "See you in the afterlife, Bagman" had me rolling. Spot on military banter.
Well, he left them to fend for themselves, and all they're doing is reminding him of that fact. If you wanna play Lone Ranger, Hangman, do a better job at remembering you did the "leaving your wingman" strategy boy-o.
@@girl1213 Phoenix is not a charter member of the Hangman fan club. Of course, is anybody? Except Hangman.
Actually that was a rather sanitized, dare I say, polite military banter!
@@rayedward5465 lol! Truth.
@@rayedward5465 Actually I thought the whole movie was pretty sanitized.
My dad was an Air Force aviator during the Vietnam War. He flew the F-4 Phantom. On a mission over North Vietnam, my dad lost his wingman. It haunted him for the rest of his days. Not long before he passed away, my brother & I took him (at my dad's request) to the Vietnam Memorial in D.C. My brother and I stood back from the wall while we watched our dad put his hand over his wingman's name. When he walked back to the both of us, he quietly said "it should have been me". Rooster became my favorite character in the film for doing what my dad's wingman did. Nuf said. Peace.
Gosh. This story…. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13 from the holy Bible
Spoiler? So Rooster dies then
@@DrWatson4 No, he doesn't. But he puts himself in harm's way to save Maverick's life in the end. Same as my father's wingman, but with less tragic results.
me and my brother took our dad to the wall as well. all you can do is stand back and let them be. when he was done it was a very quiet walk out of the area. there aren't any words.
Wild how people just make up stories on the internet like this. Congratulations on your imaginary internet points.
“ It was all fun and games till that selfie huh ?” Lol awesome 😂
You know that line hit different cause he probably waited until they were struggling with those reps lol🤣
2:05 "And now you know a little something about Rooster"
I missed that the first time. Rooster didn't even hesitate to take the hit from Maverick to save his wingman. Phoenix pointing out that, when the cards are down, he'll always make the sacrifice play for his friends was a bit of foreshadowing I can't believe I missed.
I saw this scene before, saw the movie yesterday in the theatre and still it didn't click. Only now it is clicking.
@@railion6513 I missed it too. There is something how they present it it isn't attention grabbing.
@@2DarkHorizon I'm still thinking about the real meaning of the 3 guys saying: "that should have been us ", when Rooster is doing pushups.
@@railion6513 Because during the training dog fight payback is about to go on lock from Maverick. But than rooster crisscrosses on Maverick gun sights drawing away attention from payback.
@@2DarkHorizon oh, that was payback saying so? Damn.
Subtle detail. When Rooster hears Mavs voice he puts on his mask since he knows what mav is capable off.
He grew up knowing this guy. Hangman thinks Mav is cocky. Rooster just knows he's that *good*
Great catch! I didn't notice that. I love it when they put in little details like that.
And the part where Rooster baits Maverick away from his wing man - to save his life - with the line: "Not this time Old man..."
Mission always come first...
Wow, thank you! It changes the whole scene. The next clip of him fixing his mask adds to the prep. What I now notice most is the "Guys" in the middle of the banter. Its placement sounded like Maverick saying "Guys that's a lot of push ups." I think its Rooster saying "Guys!" like time to be alert. So cool thank you again.
nobody caught the fact that Maverick was speaking but it was Goose talking "easy Maverick, LET'S try to not get fired on the first day" and "Don't let him get to you Maverick"
it's all things Goose would say from the backseat
That's how much Maverick knows Goose. To the point he would know what Goose would say if he was with Maverick
That’s why Mav would always say “talk to me Goose.”
Really? No one caught that? Just you?
Yeah… Nobody caught that fact… Just you dude just you
@@herbderbler1585Me too, I never thought about it. Guess there's 2 of us that aren't as smart and all knowing as you.
Mad props to this movie. It’s such a great follow up that doesn’t shit on the original.
See: Owl Kitty Top Gun
just for fun
@@veramae4098 hahaha. I just did. That was great.
Now if only Hollywood could do this with Aliens, the Terminator, Predator, etc
Well, they didn't shit on the original but neither did they respect Mavericks growth as a character during the original movie. He had to overcome his own cockyness and trauma after his wingmans death and finaly did so during the final fight. But then in Maverick he is still hunted, doesn't know when to stop and was kicked from Top gun after a short time as instructor because, apparently, he was still not disciplined enough. This just does not match the Maverick at the end of the original movie and i dont like that they just ignore the character of Charly. What happened to her and Mav? Who is this new chick? Don't get me wrong, Maverick was one of the better sequels we got over the last decade. But it was still not as good as it could have been. The entire first sequence with Maverick as test pilot for example was unnecessary and even counter productive because it ruined the characters growth over the first movie. Why not just make him a retired instructor who gets brought back for this mission? Wouldn't change any other part of the movie but not ruin Mavericks arc during the first movie.
@@Fackeldackel I mean the whole point was he didn't become a completely different person, he's still a maverick. You think up there you're dead. I didn't see that as ruining the arc at all from first movie.
It wouldn't shock me at all that he'd be determined to still be flying something instead of working a desk job as an admiral.
What part of his arc from the first made you think he'd go eagerly off into the sunset and not do everything he could to stay in cockpit ?
Did we watch different original movie arcs ?
2:55 Maverick: "Leaving your wingman, that's a strategy I haven't seen in a while".
Maverick did it in the original Top Gun movie amd got chewed out for it. Learned his lesson. The line is an homage to the original movie while showing Maverick has grown up and has a sense of humour about his past.
No duh.
@@akaviral5476 Don't be too harsh - he probably wasn't even alive back in '86
Actually that's the best way to handle a 2v1 fight. Each jet in the element goes a different direction, which forces your opponent to look out two sides of his canopy, which makes it substantially harder to defend.
@@digitaurus I was but I was addressing those that werent. Akaviral is an idiot.
They weren’t rookies. In fact they were some of the most experienced fighters the Navy had. One of them even had a confirmed kill before this. You calling them rookies just shows how unintelligent you are.
One of the extremely rare modern sequels that actually delivered great entertainment and didn't disrespect the original.
I like the homage to the original “there’s a strategy I haven’t seen in a while!” And “yep you’re good, I’ll give you that” is almost exactly what Viper said about Maverick, I think his line was “damn, this kids good!”
Viper says that
So right….Jester does say that!
Haven't watched it yet but LOVE how Rooster is already preparing for the fight while his wingman are making bets.
It's still in theaters. You should see it in theaters.
I've seen it yesterday. DO IT!
On the off chance you haven't seen it yet, it really is that good. I am still shocked that they made a Top Gun sequel that arguably surpassed the original.
Rooster's known Maverick since he was a child. He knows not to take anything for granted.
You haven’t watched it yet???
“We do not go below the hard deck of 5000 feet”. In the theater I was like “Sure, I know how Maverick feels about the hard deck”.
Lol 😂

Just like the interaction in Aliens…
@@robertlamont6092 Yeah I was thinking about that too.
"Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?"

Tom Skerritt and Michael Ironside (Viper and Jester) had to LOVE this scene seeing some of the callbacks to their secenes in the original movie.
Tom Skerritt: (as Viper) Kids...
Michael Ironside: (as Jester) Punks...
Knowing how stubborn of teachers they are, they probably have a radio next to their bed.
*Maverick:* Leaving your wingman. That's a strategy I haven't seen in a while.
*Viper:* We taught him well.
*Jester:* He's still an asshole.
I love how they showed respect and love to Val Kilmer.
When Mav schooled Hangman, that was most satisfying. lol.
"Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss"
Sums up the younger pilots' first day pretty well....
I am embarrassed at how often i have rewatched this movie
No shame, it's a great flick!
When it came out on Netflix, I watched it every night for 9 days. Yes, I am obsessed. Fantastic movie. ❤
This is my favorite sequence from the movie. I love how maverick references to his old days at top gun
Lot of callbacks in that movie. One of the things that made it fun.
@@rhoadesjerry9696 I agree
I was a Top Gun instructor in 1988 and this was an excellent movie
Now that’s how you make a sequel! This is one of the best sequel movies I’ve seen next to Terminator 2.
I’d argue The Dark Knight is another sequel that deserves the same amount of respect
The Godfather 2 is also considered one of the best sequels of all time and it is also a prequel too.
Empire Strikes Back, Spider Man 2, Airplane 2, ...
TGM I've seen 8 times already, three in theaters and it was a fantastic sequel, but Aliens is still the best sequel to the original IMO
Empire Strikes Back. LOTR The Two Towers.
This scene was awesome knowing Maverick was is a skilled pilot showing them how to make the mission successful was a great experience to watch!!!
It’s STILL in theatres. You must see it if you haven’t yet
Smaller screens don't do it justice, it's AMAZING in theaters
“This is how you bury a fossil”. Somebody was begging to be taught a lesson. At least the OG hotshot trainees all respected Viper.
Holy shit it’s Viper
I know Hangman made up for it regardless but when he said “This guy needs an ego check” to Maverick and then ended up leaving his wingman was funny. I can tell why Maverick didn’t take him in with them.
It was a double edge sword on the who to take.. By Leaving him on the Carrier he put in in the Exact same spot Mav was in relation to Ice Man in the End of teh Original.. Not the Best Team player but the Best man to be the Cavalry when you need help yesterday
@@scotthartman8993 There was a lack of realism in the ending. Where is the BARCAP? A carrier force does NOT cruise around near and especially IN enemy waters without a CAP of some kind, who would have easily been able to respond to a friendly in trouble.
Yes, Hangman was a backup, but he could have launched on Alert 5 when it was clear things were going south fast. An Alert 15 and Alert 30 would have been in the wings to deal with any contingency. Not to mention the sheer amount of anti-air missiles a carrier force carries.
Great movie! Nothing wrong with it in terms of 'A Movie', or even as a sequel. It's just got some holes amidst the fantastic realism they slammed into it.
@@chrismaverick9828 Sure but the same can be said for the First Movie.. Where was the rest of the Battle Group with the Anti sub and AA screen?

Saw this one MV of Danger Zone where the music starts the _INSTANT_ she says that
I work with Top Gun graduates (it's called NSWAC now). They laugh at that line because they've all said that no one from their program would ever say that. If you're not busy learning, you're useless for future fights.

This movie has the best cinematography and flying sequences that I have seen in a long time, leave to Tom Cruise to come back with a sequel to a classic film, that blew movie audiences away with a visual feast for the eyes.
Feel sorry for the guy that counted the others doing push-ups. He counted a lot of push-ups...
Definitely at least a thousand in this scene

Hondo was enjoying it. He and Mav have been friends for a long time
Sr. NCO’s just love to deflate the ego’s of pompous Jr officers, it’s how they teach them leadership.
The most extreme game of tag ever
“Baby on board” funniest scene ever
And the fact he couldn't hold his laugh in with that joke either 🤣
"You never, ever leave your wingman" lol
Song choice is perfect "we won't get fooled again" yet they keep getting fooled by him
It's also Maverick's Mantra. He's well aware of the tricks both new recruits and instructors alike will pull to get the best out of each other. Mainly because he helped invent them. So needless to say he won't get fooled by the recruits' attempts at besting him or let them be fooled by the same things he had to learn.

The F-18s are impressive, but the F-14 is sexier!
I had the pleasure of meeting a number of American Naval/Marine aviators and British Royal Navy pilots in my last ten years with the Mothership, getting the 35B and C Combat Readiness Approved, they really were the best of the best of both countries...but i never met one who could do 200 pushups without a lot of rest time (and i don't mean in the up position, I mean multiple sets)...they were all in fine shape but they weren't Special Operator physical conditioned (a recently retired Principal Aerospace/Computer Engineer with America's largest defense contractor's Aero company.

Lol. Agreed. And what I like the most is that they make Maverick beating them believable for the watchers by saying that the new generation have probably never really been in a real dog fight.
Damn that's a good sequence - great music, perfect pacing. At university we were pretty obsessed with Top Gun 1. My two best friends both ended up in the RAF after three years flying and partying at uni. One ended up a pilot on Tornado (fighter-bomber version) the other a Chinook navigator - so not quite Top Gun but you can't have it all. I have the eyesite of a mole so I ended up with the girl instead 🙂
Don't knock the heelo jocks - one of them saved my uncle's ass in Vietnam - went in when no one else would - took tremendous ground fire - pulling him out on strings after he was wounded in a NVA ambush.
My Uncle told me he never did get the pilot's name... but never forgot him.
The Tornado is a hell of a great plane! Also, helos aren't easy and damn can they save your butt.

They aren't cocky rookies, they are the best of the best naval aviators, all graduates of top gun.
They are still Rookies compared to Maverick lol… which is the entire point of the movie with him training them as well as showing them that despite their skills they still have very little experience.

Well yes but I’m pretty sure it was stated that they’d all been deployed but seen no action with the exception of Hangman who had a confirmed kill. In the first movie Maverick got deployed a week or so after graduating along with the rest and even before he had already been deployed several times with MIG sightings on the carrier. I assume that’s what they mean with “rookies”.
@amilcarsafeca4808 I've actually come to believe that they were all figments of mavericks imagination. That he actually died in the test flight at the beginning of the movie and that explains why the rest of the movie is basically a Sci fi movie.
Despite the title saying “cocky rookies” which is true for most of them, I do like how rooster and pheonix are the only ones that are not overly confident, for different reasons of course. Phoenix is naturally cautious while rooster got that chip on his shoulder
This film is fantastic from beginning to end and that's a hill I'll die on.
I’m dead dickhead. Great line
See you in the afterlife, Bagman.
Ok,I'm an admitted Who fan...but this is THE BEST trailer of Top Gun/ Maverick !!
