  • Kamala Harris is the first Black woman to be a major presidential nominee - a rare breakthrough in a country that has never elected a Black woman governor and currently features no Black women in the Senate. MSNBC’s Ari Melber reports on the complex history and convenes an in-depth discussion with four trailblazers in the field: Maya Wiley, Lori Lightfoot, Donna Edwards and Dr. Edna Greene Medford. This video reflects the extended discussion, parts of which aired on MSNBC’s The Beat.

    I'm a 69 year old Black man that seen so many struggles and improvements in our civil rights over the years. I've always been a positive person but seeing how this country has become so
    divided during the area of Trump, it saddens me. These accomplished women in this conversation remind me that hope is still alive and perseverance in the key. With Kamala and Tim
    I'm feeling that same energy I felt when Obama was running. Feeling more positive for the future. We're not going back !!

      I am so proud to be a the party that brought the first black man as president. And now the first woman. And now the first black woman! I'm a 73 year old white man. My dad drove me through the South when I was 13 to see the civil war battlegrounds. Being from New York I did not understand when he said you used the wrong bathroom. Then I noticed the colored sign. This is in my lifetime. We have a long way to go. But we have made some let us now continue on this difficult path.

      I wish that this had been the first in a series of discussions by this panel. I would love to see this panel examine
      1) he long-term political and cultural consequences of downplaying (ignoring) women's roles in the abolitionist, civil rights, and anti-Vietnam War movements;
      2) the positive impact of racial/gender/social "tropes (stereotypes);
      3) the negative effects of these tropes;
      AND the big one:
      The most effective strategies to address these tropes for:
      1) men of color;
      2) white women;
      3) women of color
      4) in general.

    As a struggling, 39 year union member, I am to old to work my trade and to poor to retire comfortably. Would I call myself middle class? No. I would call myself struggling with everyone who is working to better ourselves and get ahead. I love the glass ceilings being broken. I love a more diverse representation. I love the United States and how it evolved to be the world leader for democracy, despite all the injustices incurred against the native, the slave, the poor, and the immigrant. My only accomplishment has to elevate my trade, be all I could be, trying to educate my fellow union members and the non union workers how great it is when we all work together. To exclude one is to exclude all! True leadership is inclusive! I have faith and hope the party who inspires inclusion will win.

    I live in Berlin so for me it’s 5:30 am. I lose sleep rather than miss you. This is one of the most important discussions I’ve ever seen on the subject of women and race in elected office in the USA.
    Ari, I always depend on you to put out the most brilliant voices to address complicated issues. You didn’t fail me this time either. I’m acquainted with the voices of each of these people. We are in such a dangerous place. I can’t imagine the “dictator for a day”! I have lived and taught English in Germany 🇩🇪 for 26 of my 42 years of teaching, where we know about the history of repression. The rest is in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I adore Tim Walz as Kamala’s Vice President. He has the tone and the equanimity to offer the support she needs. I taught the troops in my first job in Germany.
    But the voices of each of these women name and explicate the reasons we have to move forward with Kamala as President. I raised my son in Germany but I also raised a Black child here who came to me when he was 14. we lived in Minneapolis for one year. We are not only ready for a Black woman to be President, she is just exactly what we need. These four brilliant women are so clear about the reasons why. I really can’t imagine any other man who would engage in the risky business of posing these critical questions to four women. Thank you for all you do!

    • @kathleenbarthelemy3850
      @kathleenbarthelemy3850 29 днів тому +5

      I forgot to say that I will be 80 next month. I taught in the school that received the first Black students bused from North Minneapolis. Five years later I taught in that school. It was still more than 90% Black. This student body was absorbed into the new North High School.
      Tim Walz first came to my attention when a 15 year old student from North High was shot at a bus stop during the school day. He was an Honor Student and a football star. Tim Walz went to the school and sat with grieving teachers and students. He sat among the students in a plain white shirt with no tie. He was simply there for them. I will never forget that act of empathy and kindness. He also visited the parents. They had four daughters and finally had a son who seemed to be touched by magic. He was a star in every endeavor. And then he was taken from them. Tim Walz made a difference.

    This is the time for Kamala Harris. It's her life path, and it's the life path for our constitutional democratic republic. I was born before the middle of the last century. I've waited decades upon decades to see someone like her be acknowledged by our nation as the leader they believe we need. I'm overjoyed to promote her win, and to vote to make it happen.

    • @corrinejustmann6710
      @corrinejustmann6710 29 днів тому +1

      Tom, why are you voting for her? What are her policies? I’m sorry to hear that you waited decades to see “someone like her” be acknowledged or whatever pansy crap that has nothing to do with real actual issues Tom‼️ 😜
      First of all, how sad that this is what you look forward to. 2nd, you and Kamala both need to thank Downtown Willie Brown for all the “favors” and hours she’s spent on her knees (and her back), made her who she is today. 😳 Her choosing a known progressive, tampons for grade school boys (not a waste of money 🤨), stolen valor claims (which is hugely disgusting if he’s guilty and all the evidence is pointing to ‘he sure as heck is’) AND he’s a socialist sympathizer. We don’t need any of it! We as a nation are already the butt of other country’s jokes. We need a born leader to bring us back from the brink. The mess the Harris/Biden Administration has caused us is going to take years, we were on such a good track and then they came along. You may refuse to see the truths here TOM but more and more are taking the blinders off and realizing we are overdue for a change. We can’t keep going the way we have been under these corrupt liars. Time to put your country first, stop with all the “his words hurt my feelings” crap, it’s time to grow up! 🇺🇸 Trump/Vance 2024

    Excellent segment Ari , as a 67 yr old African American l remember my basketball team and l receiving our trophies from Congress woman Shirley Chisholm at the Bushwick High school gym in Brooklyn after my team won a basketball tournament in 1969 , when l look back on the history of people of African descent in our country and our journey of being brought here as slaves , basically our ancestors were prisoners of war that were sold by the victors of tribal warfare in Africa to Dutch and, English and Arab slave traders, and now after 400 or so years to rise to the level of being President of these United States of America, first with Barock Obama and now potentially with Kamala Harris is a tremendous pendulum swing in terms of where black people have been historically in this country to where we are now

    I was over the moon when President Biden picked Kamala as his running mate. He was the impetus that I think, president Gerald Ford was talking about, to get the wheels started for women to become president. I am over the stars because she is now running for president, and she is correct, "we are not going back."I am so proud.

      KAMALA voted and passed three important laws after a 50-50 tie in the Senate:
      1. The COVID Economic Relief for low-income Americans.
      2. The American Rescue Plan Act for small-business owners.
      3. The Inflation Reduction Act. 💙 Thanks to Kamala, meal prices in fast-food restaurants are going down, for the first time in 3 years.
